NWSL expecting 'explosive' growthBuildup to 2026 World Cup resultCommissioner Berman speaks on upcoming campaignWHAT HAPPENED?

Speaking to reporters at the Financial Times' Business of Football summit in London, commissioner Berman revealed that she is expecting 'explosive' growth over the next two years. With the 2026 Men's World Cup on the horizon, and it being co-hosted in the USA, the opportunities for development are endless. The USA and Mexico also have a co-host bid on the table for the 2027 Women's World Cup, leaving Berman beaming over the possibilities.

"We know that in the U.S., the next four to six years, there is going to be an explosive growth, with or without the intentional investment we're making. … With the World Cup coming in 2026 and the possibility the Women's World Cup will come in 2027, there is an incredible amount of interest.

"There's this age-old question: When is America going to start paying attention to this global sport? Well, it's happened. They are paying attention, they love this sport, and we have this halo effect of the U.S. women's national team and their incredible success

"[Soccer] is one of the few sports where when you ask 100% [of the] people in the U.S. to close their eyes and imagine 'greatness, soccer and America' they think of women."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Berman described the NWSL's 'superpower' as it's independence from men's clubs around American soccer – which is not the case in European soccer. Their freedom as a sporting league – and each respective club's ability to navigate on their own – gives them an edge as a powerhouse women's soccer league, as well.

Notably, the NWSL is starting to attract major overseas talent – with Racheal Kundananji joining expansion side Bay FC for a world-record fee, Barcelona Femeni's highly-successful coach Jonatan Giraldez signing a pre-contract agreement to join the Washington Spirit this summer and Chelsea superstar Jessie Fleming opting for a stateside switch to Portland Thorns.

‘If Christian Pulisic was Dutch or Italian, he’d still be at Chelsea’ – USMNT stars in England have to be ‘good every day’, says ex-Man Utd & Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard

Christian Pulisic would still be at Chelsea if he were “Dutch or Italian”, says Tim Howard, with USMNT stars having to be “good every day” in England.

  • American forward left London for Milan
  • Turner & Steffen still in England
  • Have to prove themselves all the time
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

United States international Pulisic spent four years on the books at Chelsea having joined them from German giants Borussia Dortmund in 2019. He became a Champions League winner with the Blues, but moved on over the summer after finding regular playing time and peak form hard to come by. He is now at Serie A heavyweights AC Milan, with Howard claiming that American players are still treated differently in the Premier League.

    WHAT THEY SAID

Former Manchester United and Everton goalkeeper Howard has told the podcast: “For as much as people want to say that the landscape has changed for Americans, it has not. I think Christian Pulisic did a brilliant job. When he was called upon in that Chelsea team, if he was Dutch or Italian or anything else, he’d still be in the team, he wouldn’t be the first one pulled off the pitch, he wouldn’t be a substitute. He’s that good, he’s showing that at Milan now, so as an American it’s tough. You have to do it every day.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

That message has been sent in the direction of USMNT keeper Matt Turner, who is now at Nottingham Forest after leaving Arsenal, as well as Manchester City custodian Zack Steffen. Howard added on the battle to fill No.1 duties for the United States: “Zack Steffen, for me, when I look physically what he is as a goalkeeper – man, that kid has it all. He has more athleticism and a better body than anybody that has stepped in and won the U.S. shirt in the history of U.S. goalkeeping – I think he is that physically gifted. Can he put it all together? At the moment he is dealing with injuries and stuff, but ultimately if he becomes a hot hand at some point then he can challenge Matt. He has had a very similar journey to me – he has gone over from Major League Soccer, gone to a huge club, didn’t play a tonne and then moved on. When I moved on, I cemented myself 10 years at Everton and I think he can do that at Forest. It’s not easy because, here’s the elephant in the room, if you’re at American and you are playing in the Premier League, you had better be good every day – not for a year, not for a game.”

    WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Ethan Horvath is another American keeper in England, although he has been left out of Forest’s Premier League squad for 2023-24. Tyler Adams has completed a transfer to Bournemouth, but international team-mate Weston McKennie returned to Juventus at the end of his loan spell at Leeds. Brenden Aaronson is now on loan at Union Berlin after suffering relegation in his debut campaign at Elland Road.

Bell injury may not end England recall chance

Ian Bell’s hamstring strain should not keep him out of contention for England’s first Investec Test squad, according to his director of cricket at Warwickshire, Dougie Brown

A subsequent scan revealed a “slight strain” in Brown’s words. While any injury doubt at this stage – the squad for the first Test will be picked on Wednesday – is far from ideal, Warwickshire hope Bell would be fit for their next Championship match which starts on Sunday. The Test does not start until Thursday. He had a net at Edgbaston on Tuesday and will bat on Wednesday as required.Bell has not played for England since the final Test of the series against Pakistan in the UAE in November, but has started the season in fine touch – he made a century against Hampshire and looked set for another against Middlesex until bowled by one that kept low – and describes himself as “refreshed” after a period of rest ahead of the season.”He is coming on well,” Brown told ESPNcricinfo. “We certainly hope he’ll be fit for the next game, but it’s a bit too early to say for sure. Usually a hamstring strain would keep a player out for five to 10 days. The next two days will tell us a lot but he will bat in this match if needed.”Meanwhile Brown dismissed concerns over the pitch at Edgbaston for the current game, suggesting there had been some “soft dismissals” on both sides.Several batsmen were struck by the ball on the second day, with Lewis Gregory sustaining what appeared to be an especially hard blow on the helmet. But while Brown admitted there were some cracks in the pitch, he did not think they were serious.”People complain when the wicket is flat and they complain when the wicket helps the bowlers,” he said. “There may be a bit of uneven bounce, but there are also two very good pace attacks at work in this match.”Maybe one or two balls bounced a little, but I saw a couple of batsmen duck into pretty full balls and I think both sides will look back at their dismissals on day two and think them a bit soft.”There was no play on day three of the game at Edgbaston due to rain meaning Warwickshire will resume on day four requiring 318 to win with all 10 wickets in hand. “We’re only thinking about winning this game,” Brown said. Judging by the weather forecast, though, a draw is a strong favourite.Brown also played down speculation linking him with the vacant role as coach of Otago.”New Zealand is a wonderful country,” Brown said. “And my wife is from there. So maybe one day, who knows? But at the minute all my focus is on Warwickshire. We have a lot of unfinished business here and I’m not thinking of anything else.”

Kohli determined on 6-5 combination for upcoming season

India’s decision to play five bowlers in the subcontinent has generated a lot of buzz, and now more importantly, some tangible results. Enough for Virat Kohli to maintain his faith in it

‘Big fan of playing five bowlers’ – Kohli

India’s decision to play five bowlers in the subcontinent has generated a lot of buzz, and now more importantly, some tangible results. Enough for Virat Kohli to maintain his faith in it.Although the only Test in Fatullah ended in a draw, the additional help had proved useful as R Ashwin and Harbhajan Singh combined to take eight wickets to force Bangladesh to follow-on. But with rain usurping a giant chunk of the game, the expected end came to pass. But not before Kohli was able to work out a few more permutations to his strategy.”I would want someone like R Ashwin, who is averaging 40 with the bat in Test matches – you really can’t ask for more from an allrounder – and someone like Harbhajan Singh to step up with the bat, and [Wriddhiman] Saha too,” Kohli said. “If those three start clicking, you literally have eight batsmen, and you can’t really ask for more as a captain. It’s basically up to the first six to take more responsibility and we are confident of doing that.”‘Reserve day in Tests a good suggestion’

Virat Kohli admitted playing against the weather was a futile task, but was intrigued by the possibility of reserve days in Tests matches.
“That’s a debatable question. It could be, I don’t know,” he said. “Say, on the fourth day a team is struggling to save a game, and the next day it rains for two sessions and the game is drawn. The team that deserves to win doesn’t get a win. So yes, there might be a thought there. It’s a good suggestion actually.
“You might want to add another day seeing the situation of the game. If there is a possible result, there is no harm in giving the team that’s winning a fair chance to compete for three sessions. You earn a draw or the deserving team gets a victory. Might not be a bad thing, but I’m not sure how the discussions are going to go.”

Next on India’s docket is a tour to Sri Lanka, before hosting South Africa, who have not lost an away series since July 2006. Naturally, fronting up with a team full of options was a priority for Kohli. Will he retain the present attack with Ashwin and Harbhajan working in tandem?”I would like to have players who can win us games in the bowling unit. And both of them have that ability,” Kohli said. “Especially now that we have a prolonged season in the subcontinent, we need to look at how we can strengthen our team for that as of now. And both of them are good enough to do the same thing when we go away from home as well, it’s just about the mindset I guess. The more confidence we build in this season, we’ll carry it forward to wherever we play in the future as well.”Watching them bowl together in a pair was really exciting as a captain. And I think both of them enjoyed bowling together as well – if one put pressure, the other took a wicket and vice-versa.”Kohli is not known as a man who takes a backward step. And he has a simple reason for playing that way. It’s fun: “We want to play that sort of cricket. When I captained in my first Test in Adelaide too, I had the same thought process, that we should play aggressively and give ourselves a chance to win the game. You enjoy the game when you play like that.”I think, as a team, it’s very important to have that intensity and attitude especially when we are fielding. Because that is the one time when all 11 players are together and you get the true sense of being a team. We have that understanding in the team that we need to maintain intensity in the field at all times, regardless of the conditions, the pitch, or the situation. If your intent is to win, you will always do well in any situation and come out better than the other team more often than not.”That’s my thinking, but the credit goes to the whole team for responding to that. Because I can think something, but if players don’t respond then it’s useless. We are all on one page, and in sync. It’s a good thing and if we keep building that we’ll get even stronger.”Amid India’s push to move onward and upward, there were a few moments to reflect on and Kohli was asked about life after MS Dhoni.”It’s obviously strange,” he said. “The same thing happened when Sachin Tendulkar retired. A few games after that it was a very strange feeling. You suddenly don’t see a very impactful figure in the dressing room. As a cricketer, you always get used to having him around, listening to him, having discussions with him. That voice is always there and it’s a very familiar feeling in the change room.”Now that he’s not there, you sometimes do feel he’s going to pop out of somewhere. Those sort of things happen, it’s a natural process. But now he’s decided to retire from this format and everything moves on. The team wants to continue in the same way, that has done well in the subcontinent in the past as well, so we can take that leaf out of his book. He’s really helped a lot of us youngsters in becoming good international players. He’s given us ample opportunities, so now is the time for us to take up the responsibility and take Indian cricket forward.”

Kane Williamson will captain New Zealand during their Twenty20 and one-day international matches against Pakistan in the UAE. Captain Brendon McCullum will skip the series and instead head home to New Zealand to prepare for the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka, along with fast bowlers Tim Southee and Trent Boult.Batting allrounder Anton Devcich has been included, having not played for New Zealand since last November, and fast bowler Adam Milne also earned a spot. Bruce Edgar, the general manager of national selection, said the decision to give McCullum, Southee and Boult extra time at home was based on their recent workloads.”Managing players’ workloads will be an important part of our summer’s plans and this is simply an example of that,” Edgar said. “On the flipside, it gives us a chance to assess and evaluate other players in contention for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 squad, and allows us to work on some of our contingency plans – such as developing Kane’s captaincy experience.”Williamson has led New Zealand in three ODIs and two T20s, most recently the second T20 against West Indies in July. The first Test against Sri Lanka begins less than a week after the return to New Zealand of the ODI squad.T20 and ODI squad Kane Williamson (capt), Corey Anderson, Dean Brownlie, Anton Devcich, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Mitchell McClenaghan, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Adam Milne, James Neesham, Luke Ronchi, Ross Taylor, Daniel Vettori.

Need good domestic spinners, turning pitches – Misbah

Misbah-ul-Haq has said that Pakistani batsmen struggle at times against quality spin because they are not used to facing it on turning pitches in domestic cricket. Pakistan lost their first four wickets to Australia’s spinners and scraped to 96 for 9 on a Dubai turner to lose the only T20 international.”Sometimes it happens,” Misbah said ahead of the first ODI in Sharjah. “When you are not having more spinners at the domestic level, batsmen are not facing more good spinners in domestic competitions … you are not used to facing them.”You need good spinners at domestic level and you need to have some turners there so the batsmen can get used to them. It is a big factor and if you see, some of the batsmen who have played more of their cricket in Karachi on pitches where it turns a little bit, and they have faced more spinners, they play spin well.”Spin accounted for eight of the 13 wickets that fell in Dubai and Misbah said that the surface would have troubled any batsman. “Obviously on a pitch like the one we played on, both teams were struggling against spin because it was gripping and turning. On a pitch like that any batsman can struggle.”George Bailey said that teams were “doctoring” their pitches to take advantage of the Australians’ frailties against spin, but Misbah felt that the visitors had become better players of slow bowling. “Playing in the IPL and getting exposure they have improved against spin. It is not about the Australians. It is about every batsman. If it is turning and the bowler is pitching it in the right areas, you have some trouble but you need to focus on your technique, your basics. Just like fast bowling, for spin you need to have good basics to face it. They are playing spin well at the moment but still even in the last game you see they were having trouble against Shahid Afridi and Raza Hasan, so we can exploit that but at the same time we also have to play spin well.”Misbah said that given the conditions, Pakistan could not depend only on spin going into the series. “You need to have a balance between pace and spin. You normally need five bowlers in a one-day or T20 game. Everybody has to really play his role. You cannot just rely that two spinners will do the damage. The way the Australians bowled on that pitch. Their fast bowlers bowled well, their spinners bowled well. On these pitches, everybody can play his role.”Pakistan are without their lead spinner Saeed Ajmal, who has been banned for an illegal action. Misbah said that Pakistan had no option but to move on in his absence, and felt that left-arm spinner Hasan, who claimed 2 for 17 in the T20, had the potential to step in.”It is really difficult for anybody to fill in for Saeed Ajmal because he has been the number one or two bowler since last three-four years. Raza Hasan is also a very good bowler. If Saeed is not there somebody has to just raise his hand and try to fill in. I think he (Hasan) showed that in the games before and even yesterday. He can be a bowler who can give something to Pakistan.”It is really pleasing the way he (Hasan) bowled. He was doing really well in the T20s before he got injured. Got operated. Good sign for Pakistan that he is back. In the one-day series we’ll be hoping that he continues to bowl like that.”
