Spurs trio to miss next two games

Tottenham Hotspur will be without Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero for their next two games after the chaos during international duty, but the pair are set to return against Chelsea.

The Lowdown: Argentina mess

Lo Celso and Romero were called up to Lionel Scaloni’s squad for the fixtures against Columbia, Brazil and Bolivia, but looked like they wouldn’t attend after the Premier League announced the agreement to block any travelling to red list countries- which Argentina is on.

Spurs are set to fine the two Argentina internationals, alongside Davinson Sanchez, for going against the club’s plans over this two-week break.

Sunday’s World Cup qualifier against Brazil was suspended after medical officials stormed the pitch to reprimand the England-based Argentinians.

The Lastest: ‘They should now…’

As shared by Football London’s Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold, the Spurs trio will miss the Premier League fixture with Crystal Palace and their opening Conference League game with French side Rennes.

‘We got there in the end. They should now just miss the matches against Crystal Palace and Rennes, along with Davinson Sanchez,’ he said on Twitter, sharing an announcement from the Argentinian FA.

After leaving Argentina, they are joining Sanchez in Croatia for a ten-day training camp and could be in contention to feature against Chelsea on September 19th.

Charlie Eccleshare of The Athletic has called the news ‘a really big bonus’ as the players won’t lose any fitness and if they stayed with their national teammates would miss the Chelsea and Arsenal game.

The Verdict: Huge boost for Spurs

It looked like Lo Celso and Romero would stay with Scaloni’s squad until the conclusion of the international break, but with them exiting a red list country now, they will be back for the doubleheader against Chelsea and Arsenal.

Spurs’ strong start to the season has inserted a good flow within the club and only missing the duo for the Palace and Rennes game won’t hurt Nuno Espirito Santo’s side too much.

However, missing Sanchez, who has started all three of the opening Premier League games, will leave a gaping hole. Nuno may need to turn to Japhet Tanganga to start in the centre of defence after his impressive start to the season at right-back, with the ‘phenomenal’ (via Serie A expert Conor Clancy) Romero also missing.

Pietersen readies England for tough tour

England touched down in Mumbai yesterday after a long flight from Antigua, via London, and their captain, Kevin Pietersen, was under no illusions that their tour of India is going to be a tough assignment.”This series is going to be very difficult. Coming to India is tough. Beating India in India is tough. We drew the Test series last time but we got smashed 5-1 in the ODIs. We are just looking to improve,” Pietersen said at a media briefing, at the Cricket Club of India, before the team’s first practice session.Pietersen, the highest-scorer in the one-day series on England’s last tour of India in 2006, said to do well against India they needed to break the confidence of the hosts, which has been high since Mahendra Singh Dhoni became captain.”He [Dhoni] is a free customer when he goes out. He doesn’t get too emotionally wound up by the look of things,” Pietersen said. “At the end of the day the players who play with him just want to do well. In terms of his captaincy he oozes confidence in the dressing room. We just need to try and keep that confidence down.”Yet Pietersen was not willing to call England the underdogs. Behind his own confidence was England’s 4-0 one-day win over South Africa last summer, their most convincing limited-overs performance in recent times.Sehwag new vice-captainVirender Sehwag has been named India vice-captain for the forthcoming ODI and Test home series against England. Sehwag takes over as vice-captain of the Test team from MS Dhoni, who is now India’s ODI and Test leader following the retirement of Anil Kumble.Yuvraj Singh was India’s ODI vice-captain during their last series in Sri Lanka. But this time, it was felt that Sehwag was a better candidate to ensure “continuity in decision-making” as he commands a place in both Tests and ODI sides. Yuvraj has been named in the India side for the first three ODIs against England, but is yet to cement his place in the Test team.”We would have won 5-0 had it not rained in the final ODI in Cardiff. To beat South Africa 4-0, it’s something we haven’t done before. We are learning how to win.”Though England have hardly had a break since the Stanford Super Series in Antigua less than a week ago, they are far from jaded. According to Peter Moores, their coach, the Stanford games are now history. More importantly, Moores wants his team to perform in a similar fashion to the South Africa series.”The key is to get consistent runs and our batters have to fire. That was one thing that worked very well against South Africa,” Moores said. “With the extra pace of Steve Harmison and Andrew Flintoff and the bounce that they can create from their height it gives us a chance to take wickets in the middle. That could be really important.”Steve is in a real good place. He is bowling very well. Even in the Stanford game, with all the pressure on, his first over was a great over. He’s had a fantastic season in England and played well for Durham as they won the County Championship.”Moores admitted that Sachin Tendulkar not being part of the Indian squad for the first three ODIs was a “bit of a bonus”. But, like his captain, he too singled out Dhoni as the dangerman.England already have an injury concern to deal with, as Ryan Sidebottom is yet to recover completely from an calf injury he picked up in Antigua. The first of seven ODIs gets underway on November 14 in Rajkot.

Pundit surprised Leeds snubbed Spurs’ Harry Winks loan offer

David Norris was shocked to discover Leeds United turned down the opportunity to secure Harry Winks on loan during the transfer window.

Winks has found his opportunities at Tottenham Hotspur restricted, with the central midfielder making just one substitute appearance in the Premier League this season.

It has been reported that Leeds opted against taking up Spurs’ offer of signing the England international on a season-long loan.

With the 25-year-old out of favour in north London, the current Premier League leaders were willing to offload Winks and Manchester United kept tabs on the situation before the new season got underway.

Winks also struggled to break into Spurs’ preferred starting line-up last season and made just nine top-flight starts.

His lack of involvement led to Southampton taking an interest before focusing their attentions elsewhere.

Former Leeds midfielder Norris believes Winks, who has made 110 Premier League appearances during his career, would have been an ideal addition to Marcelo Bielsa’s Whites squad.

He exclusively told The Transfer Tavern: “I’m very surprised they didn’t take that opportunity. I thought that would be a no-brainer.

“He’s played in a top six side, done well and proved he can handle himself at that level. I am surprised they didn’t look to pursue that deal.”

Superstars in name only

It is ironic, given the vast sums of money that have been put up for grabs in the coming days, that the opening fixture of the Stanford Super Series counted for absolutely nothing

It is ironic, given the vast sums of money that have been put up for grabs in the coming days, that the opening fixture of the Stanford Super Series counted for absolutely nothing. There was no prize money on the table, and in the end, no lasting memories either, as the underdogs of Trinidad and Tobago failed in their bid to secure regional bragging rights against the misleadingly named Stanford Superstars.Instead the big guys beat the little guys with ease, displaying the sort of Caribbean cool that looked like simplicity but came within a whisker of being grossly inefficient. With Chris Gayle dropping out of the line-up because of a family problem, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul suffering from a stiff neck, the Superstars line-up was anything but, and that was before their one remaining class act, Ramnaresh Sarwan, was bowled first ball by Samuel Badree. In fact, had it not been for a pair of key performances from two of Trinidad’s finest – Kieron Pollard and Dave Mohammed – the result could easily have gone the other way. With those two turning out for the Superstars and bowling tidily at key stages of the chase, and a third member of their trophy-winning side – Rayad Emrit – sitting on the opposition bench, Trinidad were forced to field three debutants in Justin Guillen, Kevon Cooper and Navin Stewart. Gutsily as the trio performed, this isn’t exactly an ideal week to blood the next generation.Middlesex, Trinidad’s next opponents, may have similar gripes if Owais Shah makes the difference for England in Sunday’s encounter, but by and large they have fewer such issues to contend with, as Daren Ganga disconsolately pointed out. “In an ideal world I’d have wanted to have an even game, but there’s no what if,” he said. “Middlesex have the benefit of an overseas player, so it’s a bit disappointing, but this is a wonderful opportunity for the young guys to show their mettle. I’m sure this will do well for them and their careers.”Ganga said that there would be squad changes ahead of the Middlesex showdown, with experienced campaigners such as Richard Kelly and Amit Jaggernauth ready to compete for their share of a US$280,000 prize. But regardless of Trinidad’s inexperience, they still managed to cause enough problems to a ragged Superstars line-up to reinforce the notion that England are clear favourites for the US$20 million match next Saturday. It wasn’t merely the manner in which Trinidad restricted the Superstars to an insubstantial 146 for 5 in their 20 overs. It was the contrast in approaches of the two batting line-ups. Stanford’s men responded to a probing opening burst from Ravi Rampaul and Badree with woolly swipes and impetuosity – best exemplified by the mow across the line that accounted for Travis Dowlin. The Trinidadians meanwhile remained calm throughout their innings (too calm, as it eventually turned out). With five overs to go they were exactly up with the Superstars run-rate, and the fact that they fell short in the final analysis said more about the gulf in class than any tactical failings. “It was a disappointing loss, but this will give us good momentum going into the Middlesex game,” Ganga said.Of the two sides, it is the victors who will have the greater concerns ahead of their future encounters, despite the protestations of their stand-in captain, Sylvester Joseph. “The pitch wasn’t the best and 140-50 was a challenging total,” he said. “I thought we lost a few wickets too early, but we knew Trinidad would come at us hard. They were competitive tonight and though they fell short, overall the game was a good one.”But there is an awful lot to be won and lost by the Superstars before this week is out, and the lapses they displayed in the field – in particular a howler of a dropped catch from Pollard at midwicket – didn’t augur well for when the pressure is cranked up a million notches next Saturday.”There are areas we need to work on. We need to work on our bowling, and in the field there were a few blunders,” Joseph said. “We’ve been preparing for six weeks under these conditions, but we’ve not had a crowd or the media watching us. I think tonight was a trial for us, and hopefully we’ll come back to show a better performance in the field.”

Crystal Palace linked to Barry Bannan

Crystal Palace have been linked with a shock move for Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan as the Premier League outfit look to add further reinforcements to Patrick Vieira’s ranks.

What’s the story?

According to Football League World, the Eagles are one of three Premier League sides closely monitoring the Scotsman’s situation, with Burnley and Watford also credited with an interest.

The report claims that nothing is at a particularly advanced stage at this moment in time, but Palace are known to be in the market for extra players before the August 31 deadline, meaning a surprise transfer could be on the cards.

He’s not good enough

Palace have had a busy window so far, allowing several experienced campaigners to depart Selhurst Park on free transfers before replacing them with some exciting, young acquisitions.

However, new manager Vieira openly admitted that he wants the capital club to conclude some more business this summer as his squad is a little light in a couple of areas.

“When you look at the squad we are maybe a little bit more light on numbers, and we are working hard to improve the squad (with) the window are still open. We will try to bring players that can improve our squad.

“I think where we are maybe a little bit more short is upfront and in the midfield, I think it would be good to reinforce those positions,” revealed Vieira in his pre-match press conference on Friday.

Nevertheless, targeting a player who flopped during his time in the Premier League and has spent the last six-and-a-half years playing in the Championship as a result is surely not what the Frenchman had in mind.

The last top-flight team Bannan actually played for was Palace in the first half of the 2014/15 campaign, but after only making two starts all season, he moved to Bolton Wanderers in the second tier in January.

Since then, the diminutive box-to-box dynamo has carved out a good career for himself with Sheffield Wednesday, making 262 appearances for the south Yorkshire outfit.

Yet at 31, he’s not the ideal target for a club in the midst of a squad overhaul, who are expected to be involved in a relegation scrap to retain their status in the top-flight.

Therefore, Palace chairman Steve Parish must avoid a potential nightmare and focus his attention on other midfielder options such as Will Hughes if he’s to guide the capital club into their 10th consecutive Premier League campaign.

West Ham handed huge Milenkovic boost

West Ham United have been handed a massive boost in their pursuit of Nikola Milenkovic this week…

What’s the word?

The Fiorentina colossus has been subject to interest from the Irons for several months, with ExWHUemployee confirming last month that he is a target for manager David Moyes.

“The latest is a guy called Milenkovic from Fiorentina. There is interest in him, but I don’t think they’ve put any concrete offer in for him at all, but he is on the potential radar,” he said on ‘The West Ham Way’ podcast.

It’s gone quiet since but now it seems like the door has opened for the Premier League side to strike, according to reports in Italy.

Corriere dello Sport claim La Viola will sell the 23-year-old centre-back in the coming weeks, if he does not agree to a new contract, and they have already lined up some potential replacements.

GSB must act

If these reports are to be believed, then the Hammers have to make their move.

Moyes is believed to want to add a new star centre-back to his armoury before next month’s transfer deadline and the Serbian beast is a perfect candidate.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-the-latest-gossip-and-much-more-2” title= “Read the latest West Ham news, transfer rumours, gossip and much more!”]

Milenkovic has been likened to one of the Premier League’s greats in Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic, which is an encouraging sign to begin with.

“Milenkovic is better than Vidic with the ball at his feet, and he is much calmer on the field,” Mozzart journalist Dejan Stankovic told ESPN FC. “He is the most talented centre-back Serbia have had since Vidic, and they definitely have one thing in common – both are fearless.”

Also dubbed a “beast” his former Partizan coach Ivan Tomic, who too made the same comparison, the towering 6 foot 5 defender averaged 3.6 clearances, 1.4 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per outing in 2020/21, via WhoScored.

He even recorded a seasonal 86% passing accuracy, proving he’s more than just a physically imposing presence but one that could be well-suited to the out-from-the-back way of playing in the Premier League.

GSB and the club’s hierarchy must now make a move for the £22.5m-rated star now that they have been handed a very encouraging boost over his future in Italy.

They’re evidently planning for the future without him, it would be foolish to not launch a bid now.

AND in other news, Moyes could seal West Ham bargain by signing £26m-rated “monster” who bullied Antonio…

Test status for us is a bit far fetched: Dutch captain

The good thing about Roland Lefebvre, the Dutch captain, is that he has no delusions about his team’s place in world cricket

Anand Vasu16-Sep-2002The good thing about Roland Lefebvre, the Dutch captain, is that he has no delusions about his team’s place in world cricket. Despite losing to Sri Lanka by 206 runs in their first match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2002, Lefebvre had a smile when he spoke to the press. And no, he did not demand that the ICC grant the Netherlands Test status.”I think Test status is a little bit far fetched. For that, cricket has to become a part of our culture, you need a lot of wickets, grounds and generally resources. To play one-day cricket at the international is more our goal – something we can achieve with continued support from the ICC.”About the game itself, Lefebvre took a few positives out of the game, despite the heavy, if unsurprising loss.”You look for positives when you lose. The positives are plentiful. I was not surprised that Sri Lanka elected to bat, but to restrict them to 292 was a grand effort by our bowlers. The wicket was very flat. The Sri Lankans could easily have run away from us but our bowlers stuck to their task. We dropped a few catches. If we had luck going our way, we could have restricted them to less.”Addressing the divide in ability between teams like the Netherlands and the best sides in the world, Lefebvre raised a valid point about the exposure sides like his need so badly.”You have to play this type of cricket over and over again to get used to playing such good teams. We’re not even used to playing under lights. I’m sure it took Sri Lanka a little while to start winning when they first came into international cricket. Bangladesh are struggling a bit now. If we get the opportunity to play in strong tournaments and gain experience we will grow slowly.”Sanath Jayasuriya, while obviously happy with the win, looked forward to the tough game ahead against tournament favourites Australia.”We expect a tough game against the Australians. That is something we always do. We have a few days and will think about the game, work out our plans and pick our best team. We tried out Dharmasena today as he hasn’t played international cricket in a while. Now that we have tried out most of our cricketers we can take a decision on the team to play Australia.”With Sri Lanka taking on minnows the Netherlands expectations were high for a run feast for the Lankans and perhaps a record or two being broken. Jayasuriya explained that it was never Sri Lanka’s aim to chase records.”We wanted to win the match. We didn’t go in trying to hit the ball all around the place. We just wanted to score 250-275 and make sure we won the match.”
