Crystal Palace: Fans react to new home kit

Crystal Palace unveiled their new home kit on Tuesday evening, which naturally received plenty of interaction on social media from numerous Eagles supporters.

Palace had already released their away and third strips and shared their traditional red and blue kit 11 days before the new season gets underway.

The Eagles had a helping hand from the club’s ‘oldest fan ever’, Nan Pam, who modelled the shirt in a video with a number of Palace players.

The kit, available to view here, has diagonal red and blue stripes across the front with a red sleeve and a blue collar.

You’d expect that the first time Palace will wear their new home attire competitively would be in Patrick Vieira’s first game in charge at Selhurst Park against Brentford on August 21, as they are away to Chelsea in their season opener.

Palace fans react

The club shared a clip of the new kit on their official Twitter page. The response was largely positive from fans, with one labelling it as ‘epic’.

West Ham fans rave over Soucek captaincy

Many West Ham United fans have taken to Twitter to express their delight over an announcement involving the club’s midfielder Tomas Soucek.

The 26-year-old shone for the Irons during his first full season in east London and played a pivotal role alongside Declan Rice in midfield.

Starting all 38 Premier League matches and becoming one of only two West Ham players to feature in every single league game, he also won the most aerial duels per match (6.2) out of the entire Hammers squad (WhoScored).

The colossal midfielder took that form on to the international stage and even captained his Czech Republic side to a shock round of 16 win over Netherlands at Euro 2020 (whufc.com).

As reward for his efforts, Soucek has been officially rewarded with the captaincy for his country on a permanent basis. Czech national team boss Jaroslav Šilhavý confirmed during his Wednesday press conference that the 26-year-old will be handed the armband as he is made captain indefinitely.

Flocking to the announcement, it’s safe to say that plenty of West Ham supporters are ecstatic over this update on their hero – with one branding it ‘good news’.

Liverpool linked with Milinkovic-Savic move

Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has again been linked with a move to Liverpool, with the Reds reportedly making ‘calls’ regarding a switch.

The Lowdown: Milinkovic-Savic impresses for Lazio

The 26-year-old enjoyed another impressive season for Lazio in 2020/21, scoring eight goals and registering nine assists in Serie A.

Milinkovic-Savic continues to stand out as arguably one of the best midfielders in the league and he may not be without suitors this summer.

The Latest: Liverpool update emerges

According to Calciomercato [via Sport Witness], ‘there have been some calls’ from Liverpool about a potential move for the Serbia international.

That being said, the Reds are only thought to be willing to pay less than the rumoured €70-80m (£59.9-68.4m) that Lazio want for his services.

The Verdict: Great player, but unlikely

In truth, a move looks unlikely, given the amount that is required to pay for the £63m-rated midfielder.

However, Milinkovic-Savic is a wonderful footballer who could be a great addition in the middle of the park, with his aforementioned end product standing out. He could resolve one problem area for Liverpool, with goals from midfield proving rather scarce in Jurgen Klopp’s squad last season – Curtis Jones was the most prolific player in that position with just four in all competitions.

The Serbian also averaged 1.8 tackles and 1.3 clearances per game in the league last season, showing what a formidable all-round player he is and how he could help fill the Gini Wijnaldum-shaped void in the Reds’ midfield.

Liverpool handed boost in Mbappe pursuit

Liverpool have been handed a boost in their ongoing pursuit to bring Kylian Mbappe to Anfield.

What’s the talk?

That’s arising from a report by French publication RMC Sport (via Sport Witness), who claimed that Paris Saint-Germain are growing increasingly concerned about the possibility of losing the 22-year-old on a free transfer next season.

The report states that the centre-forward currently has no intention of renewing his contract with the  Ligue 1 runners-up, with the player’s dialogue with PSG sporting director Leonardo thought to have broken down.

RMC Sport name both Liverpool and Real Madrid as potential destinations for the France international should he leave the Parc des Princes next summer, although it is claimed that neither would be able to afford a move for Mbappe this year.

Klopp will be buzzing

It goes without saying that Mbappe is one of the most exciting talents in world football, so if the possibility of signing him on a free transfer next summer is indeed accurate, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will surely be buzzing.

Indeed, having scored a breathtaking 132 goals and provided a whopping 61 assists in just 171 appearances for PSG, the £144m-rated maestro would be a magnificent addition to any team in world football.

Also, with both Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah edging close to their 30s, Klopp will undoubtedly be starting to consider replacements for the Liverpool stars, both of whom have already been linked with potential moves away from Anfield.

If either of the dynamic duo were to leave the club either this summer or next, then a move for the man David Connolly dubbed “unplayable” could well become a priority for Klopp, with not many better options to replace the goals and assists lost from the potential departure of either Salah or Mane than the PSG star.

For now, speculation regarding Mbappe’s future is very much all ifs and buts, although this latest report does appear to give the Reds hope that a deal could be done for the French forward next summer.

Crawley breaks records, as Hampshire save follow on

In 1959 a cricketer by the name of Denis Baldry hit 151 in his debut innings for Hampshire, having joined them from Middlesex

Vic Isaacs21-Apr-2002In 1959 a cricketer by the name of Denis Baldry hit 151 in his debut innings for Hampshire, having joined them from Middlesex. Today, that score was surpassed, and could even be increased tomorrow. John Crawley treated the good Canterbury crowd to an innings that was a masterclass in batting.223 not out overnight, Hampshire’s acquisition from Lancashire batted superbly against all that Kent could throw at him.Starting the day on 136-2, the visiting side still had to get 292 more runs to avoid the follow on, and soon lost Robin Smith at 178. He left a ball from Khan alone that came in on him and he was palpably lbw.Zimbabwean Neil Johnson then joined Crawley for a scintillating partnership of 232. Johnson hit 21 fours in his 226-ball innings before edging Fleming to slip. It was a superb innings in its own right with some powerful drives and cuts.Nic Pothas, Hampshire’s second debutant of the match then played his part in an unbeaten partnership of 80, but the day belonged to Crawley.Crawley became the fourth Hampshire player to score a century on debut, following Cecil Abercrombie the Scottish rugby international in 1913, Denis Baldry in 1959 and Richard Hayward who scored his debut hundred against the Sri Lankans at Bournemouth on the same day as the famous wedding of Prince Charles and Diane.John was naturally delighted with his performance today, “I could not have had a better start” he told this correspondent. “It was a good wicket, but we started the day still needing to score a hugh total, so it was tough. The whole day wasn’t just about me; Neil batted superbly and was a great support. Having achieved our aim as well as this innings it has to be a very satisfying day”. For Hampshire supporters and fans, Crawley has done a fair bit to become a local lad in just his first knock.

Ex-Rangers ace mocks Celtic’s key man - exclusive

Former Rangers star Graham Roberts insists he has never heard of new Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou and believes that it is a strange appointment from the Gers’ Old Firm rivals.

Celtic have appointed the 55-year-old as Neil Lennon’s replacement after the resignation of the Northern Irishman.

Postecoglou is not exactly well known on these shores, given that he has spent the majority of his career in Asia.

Indeed, his playing career saw him feature for South Melbourne and Western Suburbs and he has managed the former club, Australia’s U17 and U20 sides, along with the senior squad, Panachaiki, Whittlesea Zebras, Brisbane Roar, Melbourne Victory, and Yokohama F Marinos.

It is his first foray into western football, and Ball believes that Postecoglou is a bizarre hire for a club that has struggled so deeply in 2020/21.

Indeed, Celtic ended the season 25 points behind Rangers, who won the title after a remarkable unbeaten campaign under the management of Steven Gerrard.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “I don’t know what he’s like. I’ve never heard of the fella. Just for me, it’s strange because the Scottish league’s very tough but I’ve been told he likes to attack and he’d rather win a game 6-5 instead of 1-0 so, okay, we’ll wait and see.”

Pundit backs Fonseca for Wolves job

There is almost an expectation that Bruno Lage will become Nuno Espirito Santo’s successor but Get Italian Football News’ Editor in Chief, Conor Clancy believes that Paulo Fonseca could be a great fit for them.

Fonseca was recently relieved of his duties by Roma almost immediately after Jose Mourinho was on the market following his sacking from Tottenham Hotspur earlier this year and he will take charge from next season.

Wolves have a large Potuegese contingent within their squad, eight first-team players to be precise and Fonseca has experience of similar tasks during his time at Shakhtar Donetsk, as they are famous for having a lot of Brazilian players in their ranks.

The Portuguese manager has a history of winning trophies which is something Wolves haven’t experienced for a long time and Clancy believes that he could be a good alternative that Wolves target, he exclusively told The Transfer Tavern:

“He’s proven how he can work from his time at Shakhtar as they always have a lot of Brazilian players and he won things there. I’d presume that Portuguese is the language of the dressing room or at least some corners of it so I do think that Wolves seems like quite a nice fit for Fonseca.”

After being granted a work permit to move over to England take charge at Molineux, Lage appears to not be far away from being appointed as the club’s next manager, however, Fonseca could be someone that remains on their radar.

Fonseca has been linked with several jobs since leaving his role at Roma, including the vacant roles at both Everton and Celtic which would provide two totally different tasks for him.

Celtic: Ajer close to £6m Newcastle move

Newcastle United are thought to be closing in on signing Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer.

The Lowdown: Newcastle’s previous interest

Ajer was first linked with a move to St James’ Park back in March, with the 23-year-old setting his sights on a Premier League switch.

The towering defender was a regular for the Hoops during the 2020/21 season, making 46 appearances in all competitions.

Celtic signed Ajer for just £540,000 in 2016, and it seems they will make a big profit this summer.

The Latest: Magpies close to landing Ajer

According to the Sunday Mirror (30/05, pg 76), the Norway international looks set to become Steve Bruce’s first signing of the summer window, with a deal reportedly costing Newcastle £6m.

The Magpies were thought to be advancing with an £8m offer earlier this month, despite the Hoops wanting double that, so this latest update does appear to be slightly low on the valuation.

Nonetheless, it seems as if Newcastle have managed to knock £2m off the fee, with Ajer having just over 12 months remaining on his Celtic contract, which is thought to be worth around £14,000-a-week.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-4/” title=”Celtic updates” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Postecoglou to face an early problem?

Celtic are hoping to conclude a deal for Ange Postecoglou next week after talks with Eddie Howe collapsed on Friday, so the 55-year-old could be faced with an early problem as Hoops boss.

Should Ajer depart, Postecoglou would be left with Stephen Welsh as the club’s only recognised fit centre-back, with Christopher Jullien currently sidelined through injury.

The versatile Nir Bitton could fill in if required, but having a lack of central defensive options ahead of Champions League qualifiers in July may not be ideal.

Postecoglou will surely now identify a new centre-back as a key area to strengthen, so Hoops fans may well be in for a busy summer.
