Barrett-Baxendale set to leave Everton

Everton CEO Denise Barrett-Baxendale is lining up her departure, according to Twitter insider The Bobble.

The lowdown

Barrett-Baxendale features on Everton’s Board of Directors, along with chairman Bill Kenwright, majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri and finance director Grant Ingles.

She helped Everton secure the greenlight to build a new 52,888-seater stadium at Bramley Moore Dock. That was described as a feat 30 years in the making, and drew immense praise from supporters.

Director of football Marcel Brands was also on the board before he officially left the club by mutual consent over the weekend.

The latest

The insider says Baxendale is ‘looking for alternative employment’ and has been for a ‘number of months’ now – she even has the board’s blessing.

That process is said to be ongoing, indicating that Brands may not be the only high profile figure to leave Goodison Park.

The verdict

A lot of Everton fans will be sad to see Barrett-Baxendale go, when she does eventually find a new role.

The ‘brilliant’ (via The Times’ Henry Winter) CEO won praise from plenty of supporters after demanding an apology from Liverpool and Manchester United over ‘Project Big Picture’ and was also applauded after winning Business Woman of the Year in 2020.

And worryingly, BBC Sport’s chief football writer Phil McNulty noted even before this news emerged that Everton’s board of directors had a ‘very, very lightweight appearance’ post-Brands.

If the CEO does indeed follow the Dutchman in departing, some new appointments will need to be made as quickly as possible with the January window looming.

Clark and Lee bowl NSW into semis

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were outDavid Warner unleashed hell as NSW sealed the chase in 11.5 overs•Global Cricket Ventures-BCCI

On a pitch that offered bounce and some movement, Stuart Clark led a disciplined bowling performance to restrict Somerset to a below-par 111 which New South Wales knocked off without breaking a sweat in Hyderabad. With this crushing win NSW have joined their Australian counterparts Victoria in the Champions League semi-finals.It was a must-win game for NSW and they came to the party in style. Brett Lee bowled with fire, Clark was as canny as ever and David Warner unleashed hell as NSW sealed the chase in 11.5 overs. Warner got them off to an explosive start, carting boundaries all around the ground. There were couple of cut shots that stood out for his dexterity in finding the gap in a packed off-side field but the highlight was a six off Omari Banks, the offspinner. Warner backed away a touch and was actually beaten in flight but lunged out to chip it all the way over the extra-cover boundary. While the batsmen indulged themselves, the win was set up by some fine bowling from Clark and Lee.Clark was steady as ever with his back-of-a-length deliveries, getting them to cut either way. He was introduced into the attack in the fifth over and swung into action immediately with a double strike. He induced Craig Kieswetter into holing out to mid-on and had Justin Langer swinging without control to deep midwicket. In the next over, Clark got one to kick up from short of a length and had James Hildreth top-edging an attempted pull to fine leg. Arul Suppiah was run out in the same over and Somerset slipped from 24 for 0 to 39 for 4, a position from which they never recovered. Clark could have had another wicket but he dropped Zander de Bruyn off his bowling. It might have been Clark who did the major damage, but the platform was laid by a hostile spell from Lee, who didn’t shy from using short deliveries and troubled both the openers. He got away swing and bounce as he went hard at them. Doug Bollinger gave away a few fours but Lee yielded just four runs from the first two overs. The pressure eventually told on the openers who tried to break free against Clark and threw their wickets away. Lee returned in the end overs to pick up a wicket and kept a lid on the scoring. This tournament is the farewell song of Langer, who is retiring from competitive cricket after this game, but nothing has gone right for him. The reflexes seems to have slowed down and today, he was beaten for pace on quite a few occasions. However, there was one little moment that reminded you of the past: Bollinger had served him a short delivery on the free hit and Langer swiveled to unfurl a crunchy pull to the midwicket boundary. But there was little else to celebrate for Langer and his men as the ruthless NSW machine rolled along without any trouble.

Injured Younis not shirking tough games

If Younis Khan and his team fail tomorrow, he will front up and explain why they did. If there is success, he will turn up much the same. But turn up he will

Osman Samiuddin in Centurion25-Sep-2009Running away holds a significant place in Younis Khan’s scheme of things. It is a recurrent theme in his conversation, shirking from challenge, responsibility and difficulty. He has spent his career and life mired in these matters, in making his way into and out of and then back in, in refusing the vice-captaincy in 2002, in refusing the captaincy in 2007 and finally in taking it.There is a school of informed thought in Pakistan that believes when Younis turned down the captaincy after the last World Cup – effectively that he ran away, if you like – he did so because he wanted to take over when things had become even worse and some kind of savior was needed. It is self-indulgent, righteous and hubristic even, the belief that onlyyou can resolve what is a mess and right all wrongs. Democrats will also tut-tut. But the stance is also to be admired, for, potentially, you set yourself up for big falls, bigger than even the rewards. And to go into it knowing that, it is something few men take on.In a recent interview with Cricinfo, talking about taking up the captaincy time Younis said, “I am going to go into this storm, go right to the edge and see how long I can stand there.” To him that is the fun. It is a curious, contrary outlook to have and as he is a true Pathan, we can safely say he is no different from many of his kind. The balls here are untampered.Precisely these things determine his place in the side tomorrow. A finger on his right – and bottom – hand is fractured and the doctors told him he needed four weeks rest. Yesterday morning, a full two days before the India game, barely a week after the injury, the PCB – presumably with Younis’s consent, more likely on his directives – announced he will play against India. Bravado indeed.Given the opponent, it is likely he would’ve turned up had he lost a limb but nothing is ever to be assumed in Pakistan cricket; few people have forgotten just who didn’t turn up for the 1996 World Cup quarter-final against India. “I am playing tomorrow. I was told four weeks rest but I want to take my chance tomorrow, playing against India. Maybe if it wasn’t India I would’ve skipped this match. It’s very easy for me to run away, I have a fracture and I can leave it, not play against India and Australia. But these are big games. If you don’t perform in a big tournament you have to face consequences and it is very easy for me to run away here.”He is a chancer, for he believes that having tried something and failed is much more preferable than not having tried it at all. Not playing tomorrow is worse than playing and failing. And playing and succeeding is the glory of all glories. It is a choice that might dictate the inclusion or otherwise of Mohammad Asif, for example, and it is in these delicate balances of choice and decision that Younis is found.”I am looking at the big picture, who knows I may perform tomorrow and that performance will be remembered because I played with a broken finger. If I score a hundred and become Man of the Match and win the match – that is the big picture. Not playing is no advantage at all. This is manageable, maybe with an injection tomorrow, but I might play in pain tomorrow.”We’re all used to playing in pain, and the motivation has to be there to get up and play for the country. I am not 100%, it will hamper my fielding and if I get hit I will be in pain but the big picture is, why not come out and do something like Sachin did in 2003, something for my country which they will remember me for ages.”He is a fascinating study; a strikingly honest man, hyper, stubborn, proud, sometimes vindictive and much worldlier than many of his team-mates. Currently, he is one of the few really good men in Pakistan cricket’s setup. If he and his team fail tomorrow, he will front up and explain why they did. If there is success, he will turn up much the same. But turn up he will.

Sunderland: Fans react to Elliott Dickman’s departure

Sunderland confirmed on Thursday that Under-23 coach Elliott Dickman has left the club for rivals Newcastle United.

And, as to be expected, a number of Black Cats supporters have been reacting to the update on social media.

Dickman spent over 25 years with Sunderland as a player and in the coaching department, taking the lead coach role for the Under-23s in his most recent position.

He guided the club’s Under-23s to two finals during his four-year stint in charge, losing on penalties to Crystal Palace back in May in the Premier League 2 Division 1 playoff final.

Dickman has now left to take up a similar role with Newcastle, with Sunderland thanking the 43-year-old for his ‘immense contribution’ at the club.

Sunderland fans react

This is what these Black Cats fans had to say in reply after the club officially confirmed Dickman’s exit on Twitter, with one labelling it as ‘odd’ and another sarcastically saying they are ‘gutted’.

Ponting sharpens Twenty20 vision

Ricky Ponting flies to England on Wednesday as one of Australia’s mostaccomplished Test and one-day players, but his reputation in the Twenty20 set-upis less certain. While Ponting is about to join previous heroes such asSteve Waugh, Allan Border and Don Bradman as players to have gone on fourAshes tours, his high standing as a modern batting master does not guaranteesuccess in the game’s shortest form.Australia are carrying a relatively old, yet inexperienced, team to theWorld Twenty20 and when Ponting leads his men against West Indies on June 6he will be playing only his 16th international. Often whenthis sort of engagement arrives Ponting takes a rest and his wild talentsare much better suited to the longer styles. Seeing him attempt slogs soearly in an innings is unfair on his style, although he is not a tortoise, scoring his 376 career runs at a strike-rate of 131.Even Ponting, an undoubted great in the other environments, struggles whenrating his performance in the freshest genre. “Batting where I do in the toporder of Twenty20 cricket, it can sometimes be a bit difficult,” he saidduring the team’s pre-tour camp on the Sunshine Coast. “Obviously theearlier you get in the better chance you’ve got of making a big score butyou’re expected to play in a certain way. Top-order batsmen are always goingto have their ups and downs in that sort of game.”Ponting has not passed 38 in his previous four Twenty20 matches and knowshis record. “The past couple of games I’ve played have been very poor,” hesaid. “In the two games in South Africa I made 1 in each. It’s not greatform going into a World Cup.”Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist showed in the IPL that age was no barrierin 40-over affairs and while Ponting is only 34, it’s possible that he will notbe embracing all three formats when the next Twenty20 World Cup is held in2010. Australia’s selectors have grown used to chopping older players fromthe one-day side if they are not going to be around for the next globaltournament, but Ponting would not be drawn on when he would shave Twenty20from his schedule. He rejoined the Australia squad on Sunday after missing the series againstPakistan to rest and is fresh and excited ahead of the five-month trip toEngland. The World Twenty20 acts as a two-week warm-up for the Ashes inJuly, when Ponting will walk out hoping his developing Test squad can retainthe urn after a side full of established personnel dominated England in2006-07.Ponting, Michael Clarke, Simon Katich and Brett Lee are only men in thecurrent set-up who have played a Test in England and there is a strongdesire to prepare the younger team members for the experience. “I’membarking on my fourth Ashes tour, so I’ve been around the block,” Pontingsaid. “It will be important to me to get to the younger guys to talk aboutwhat to expect when we arrive.”The first stages of the preparation started on Sunday when most of theTwenty20 squad members, who depart on Wednesday, and national contractholders arrived in Coolum. There are a few missing faces with Andrew Symondsand Cameron White still in South Africa after their IPL commitments whileMichael Hussey joined his team-mates on Monday night. Hussey crossed theIndian Ocean twice in the past week after making himself available forChennai’s semi-final, but he was not considered good enough to be picked andreturned home.Shane Watson, who must prove his fitness from a groin injury over the nextmonth to make the Ashes tour, had a light work on Monday and Ponting said heshould be available to bowl during the Twenty20 tournament. However, Pontingsaid what happened over the next month would not guarantee spots for theAshes. “I don’t think you can take much out of Twenty20 form ahead of Testmatches,” he said. “We’ve got two tour games and that will be the bestchance to get a look at the guys who will play in the Tests. We’ll startthinking of the Ashes make-up in the tour games.”

Bulawayo to host Twenty20 Cup

Zimbabwe Cricket has confirmed that the domestic Twenty20 tournament has been switched from Harare to Bulawayo

Cricinfo staff07-May-2009Zimbabwe Cricket has confirmed that the domestic Twenty20 tournament has been switched from Harare to Bulawayo. The competition, which takes place between May 13 and 16, will be staged at Queens Sports Club and Bulawayo Athletic Club.”Bulawayo Metro Province has been very forthcoming in making a stronger case for the competition to be held in Bulawayo and we reached a final decision to that effect last week,” a ZC spokesperson told Cricinfo.Bulawayo Metropolitan Cricket Association chairman Bradley Staddon told the Sunday News that the switch was “a good development for Bulawayo because we have not hosted any cricket for a long time. We want to put together a good event and prove to Harare that we are capable of hosting a big tournament.”The board has been under fire for moving the entire Logan Cup to Harare, and no major cricket has been played outside the capital for more than a year. The two grounds in Bulawayo are reported by local sources to be in good condition.Defending champions Easterns, along with Centrals and Northerns are expected to start arriving in Bulawayo on May 11, two days after home side Westerns get back after completing their Logan Cup campaign. There will be two matches each day at the same venue, with the first getting underway at 9.30am.

Everton must axe Michael Keane vs Burnley

When Rafa Benitez was first announced as Everton manager, it caused controversy among the supporters at Goodison Park.

Their frustration was fully justified, too. They had lost Carlo Ancelotti and brought in a coach who has such a great affinity with Liverpool and Anfield.

Those bad vibes have been quickly eradicated, though, with the Spaniard engineering seven points from a possible nine at the start of the season.

On the chalkboard

Benitez’s new signings have hit the ground running brilliantly, with Demarai Gray finding the net on two occasions already.

However, the Toffees have struggled in one area of the pitch; defensively.

Ben Godfrey and Yerry Mina have been missing for the early stages of the campaign, which has meant a centre-back pairing of Mason Holgate and Michael Keane.

Unfortunately, it has not gone well. Everton have only kept one clean sheet in all competitions this season, which came against Brighton last time out.

On that occasion, Keane was actually in good form. The Englishman won 100% of his defensive duels and was also successful with 92% of his passes.

That was a rare good performance from the centre-back, who has actually been a liability in 2021/22.

The £69k-per-week earner failed to pick up his man for the goal that Everton conceded against Huddersfield in the Carabao Cup and was also at fault in the draw with Leeds.

Keane turned slowly and couldn’t intercept the ball, which allowed Patrick Bamford to pick up possession and then play in Mateusz Klich, who found the net.

He has attracted widespread criticism this term, particularly from Sport Witness journalist Sean Lunt. Speaking about his ineptitude last month, the reporter commented: “Another sloppy goal for Everton to concede and it’s Michael Keane again. He’s regressed awfully once again, Everton would do well to sell at this point.”

Selling the 28-year-old might be a stretch too far but it would be wise of Benitez to axe him from his starting XI when they face his former team Burnley.

They take on the Clarets next Monday and could be boosted by the return of Mina and Godfrey, who both now seem back to fitness.

Despite his productive performance against Brighton, it’s still incredibly difficult to trust Keane completely. He should be taken out of the firing line.
