Harvey Elliott – Profile

Name: Harvey Elliott

Date of Birth: 4 April 2003

Position: Winger (Right/ left)

Harvey Elliott – His career so far

Harvey Elliott is one of the Liverpool prodigies that are still fairly fresh at the club, having only arrived in the summer of 2019 and still working hard to prove his worth to Jurgen Klopp and his troops at Anfield.

But that still doesn’t take anything away from the fact he is among the highest-rated rising stars within their academy as he’s currently plying his trade for their U23 squad. His professional career, however, started with Fulham and he enjoyed success with them before moving over to the Merseyside last year.

Elliott spent some time clawing through the Cottagers’ ranks, featuring both for their U18 and U23 squads – tallying five goals and four assists in 19 games for the former and one assist across six games for the latter – before making his senior debut with the team.

And that was a huge milestone for the young lad since he was only 16 years and 30 days when he came on as a substitute against Wolverhampton Wanderers, breaking a Premier League record in the process as well.

He could only muster three appearances for the seniors, however, before Liverpool swooped in and scooped up the young talent, making him one of the Reds. Since then, he’s been a regular presence in their U18 and U23 squads and is still formally registered in the latter team despite already making his mark with the seniors.

Three goals and four assists with the U23 team do suggest he’s already acclimatising to his new surroundings and a total of seven senior appearances are further proof of that as well.

He made his senior Liverpool debut by starting the League Cup tie at MK Dons on September 25 and his Premier League bow arrived not long after that as he featured as a substitute against Sheffield United at Anfield on January 2.

Transfer latest

Probably the biggest Liverpool news that’s currently out there for Elliott is the fact that he is reportedly set to sign a new, long-term contract in the following summer that should tie him down with the club until at least 2023.

Of course, this does suggest he is at Anfield for the long run and the upper hierarchy believe that his talent could blossom into something truly beautiful in the future.

And even if there were some transfer rumours around him at the moment, considering that that would not really be such a shock since he’s only 17 after all, just the fact that Klopp has given him seven chances with the senior team does suggest no such thing will happen or it at least makes it less likely.

Transfer rumours are bound to come by eventually but if his appearances and sheer talent are any indications at all, he should be pretty safe at Anfield for the time being.

Player profile

In the day and age when wingers come in different shapes and sizes, Elliott looks set to become a more traditional wide man as opposed to following the new trends. We can say that because of his tendency to stay true to his wide positioning on the right side where he likes to hug the touchline and help his team stretch the opposition backline.

This is not to say that he is limited to only that particular role but he does excel at it, which makes it much easier to perform. But he is also a highly intelligent player who can become Liverpool’s creative playmaker from the wider areas.

Of course, this is further emphasised by his excellent dribbling abilities as he can boast with 2.67 dribbles per 90 minutes with an impressive 63% success rate. The main part, however, is in the fact that he can use his dribbles in the final third and in congested and tight areas to create space for himself and his teammates.

This makes him invaluable in both isolated scenarios and when his team faces a deep and compact block in front of them. The area in which we should expect him to improve the most, however, is the shooting and finishing.

While he is already a creative spark at Liverpool, we are yet to see him rattle the inside of the net for the seniors and he only averaged 1.28 shots per 90 minutes in 2019/20 with 46.2% of them hitting the target.

Newcastle fans on club legends being brought back

With clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal all turning to former players to take the manager’s helm, one of the big positives of taking such an approach is the unity it can inspire in fans.

And it appears Newcastle’s prospective new owners want to tap into something similar. According to The Chronicle, the consortium buying the club are looking at bringing back some club legends in some capacity as part of their plan to inspire a revolution at St James’ Park.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The Magpies have got a rich history of players and icons to tap into, most notably the likes of Alan Shearer. And after hearing about the club’s reported plans, Newcastle fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the situation.

One Newcastle fan in particular spoke glowingly of how the club’s potential owners are already taking them in the “right direction”.

Understandably, most Newcastle supporters seem excited at the prospect of seeing some of the club’s favourites head back to St James’ Park in some fashion.

Getting them involved in and around the scene only serves to bring the entire club closer, and it does sound like the new owners are already beginning to get a feel for the Magpies.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl hails his team’s "perfect" Arsenal display

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking after his side’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal on Saturday afternoon, Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has lauded his side’s “perfect” performance.

What did he say?

The Saints have endured a miserable start to the current campaign, with their 9-0 humiliation at home to Leicester undeniably their worst experience in their time in the Premier League.

And having headed into the weekend’s game in the relegation zone and travelling to the Emirates, Hasenhuttl’s side may have been fearing the worst. Instead, they were hugely unlucky to only come away with a point, with a series of missed opportunities towards the closing stages of the game.

However, despite failing to see his side hold on for all three points, the Austrian paid tribute to his players’ performances, and insisted they have now set the benchmark for what is to be expected of them.

He said (as quoted by The Daily Echo): “I think they can do it and I will them to do it because you have to. Coming now are two home games and we must have a performance like that all the time. That doesn’t mean we always play in that shape but today it was perfect and we surprised the opponent a little bit being so early on the front foot and trying to attack them very early.

“We won so many balls in the opponent half and had so often a counter attack situation. his was only because we were brave and didn’t want to defend deep and keep them away from our goal because of the quality they have in the final third. That was the right match plan I think and for this point I am happy but maybe a couple more.”

Platform

Make no mistake about it, Southampton were in desperate need of not just a good performance, but also a positive result too. And they delivered on both fronts on Saturday. The fact they come away from the game feeling like it’s two points dropped courtesy of how the match actually panned out, should really offer Hasenhuttl’s side a whole deal of encouragement.

It gives them a platform from which to build on, and as the manager himself pointed to, they have a couple of fixtures coming up that they should be looking to take close to maximum points from. The Arsenal game has given them some much-needed confidence that they can compete, and if they can produce something similar from now on, they will surely be able to avoid real trouble.

Ex-Man Utd man Zoran Tosic opens up on failed Old Trafford career

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking to The Athletic, former Manchester United man Zoran Tosic has opened up on why his career at Old Trafford didn’t pan out.

What did he say?

The Serbia international joined the Red Devils back in November 2008 from Partizan Belgrade, but failed to make a significant impression at the club, playing just five times and not scoring at all.

Now, the 32-year-old has admitted the intensity and quality of the training at United was a culture shock, and revealed he knew he wasn’t at the rest of the squad’s level.

The indoor football skills in the video below have to be seen to be believed…

He said: “I was put straight into the first-team squad and the levels were so high that it felt like another sport. It was very heavy for me in those first weeks in Manchester. The ball moved so quickly in training, the quality was top, top, level. Nobody lost the ball. Except me. I was trying my best but it wasn’t enough. This wasn’t the football I knew.

“I thought I could play for United but there was a reason I was not at their level. These players lived the football life at the top. (Ryan) Giggs was 36, (Paul) Scholes 34. They trained at 200 per cent. They lived football 24 hours. It was a big surprise to me to see them do this, a big lesson. They were on bikes before training and in the gym after.”

Eye-opener

Tosic’s admission that the levels at training went up by a few notches from what he was used to is rather unsurprising. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were dominating the Premier League and Champions League at the time, and had star-studded players all over the pitch.

More than anything however, the Serbian’s revelations are an eye-opener into the standards set by those who have reached the very top of the game, but continue to strive to remain there. The likes of Giggs and Scholes were in the twilight stages of their career, but their professionalism and dedication to the craft ensured they could compete at the very highest level. It is an incredible lesson that the current crop of United players would do well to emulate.

Arsenal fans delighted with star duo’s contract news

Where would Arsenal be without Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang?

This season, the Gabon international has been far and away the Gunners’ best player, having already netted eight goals in his first eight games in all competitions.

Quite frankly, the former Borussia Dortmund man is deadly and, without him, it is hard to imagine the Emirates Stadium outfit being so far up the Premier League table.

Alexandre Lacazette, too, is an incredibly important member of the first-team squad. He has netted twice himself this campaign, but is unfortunately unavailable at the moment due to injury. Unai Emery will be hoping he can return to full fitness as soon as possible.

The Arsenal hierarchy clearly realise their value. According to The Daily Mail, the club have opened talks with the two forwards in regards to new contracts.

And it comes as no surprise that the Gunners fans are delighted with the news.

They have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Arsenal star Lacazette under pressure as he looks to return from injury

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Arsenal kept their unbeaten run going against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday night, although it wasn’t in great fashion.

The Gunners had to make do with a 1-1 draw against the Red Devils and, although it puts them back into the top four, Unai Emery and co will be feeling this was a missed opportunity to pick up all three points against a side struggling for confidence after a 2-0 defeat to West Ham United and a 1-1 Carabao Cup draw with Rochdale; United eventually won the latter on penalties.

How do football vloggers afford to watch their team week in, week out? Find out in the video below…

It wasn’t all doom and gloom though, as there were some performances that will have pleased the Emery.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was on the scoresheet once again to bag his eighth goal of the campaign, whilst Bukayo Saka was one of the more incisive players on the field and assisted the Gabon international’s strike.

The main absentee from this match was Alexandre Lacazette, as he has been for much of the month after being advised to rest due to an ankle injury. However, although he may soon return from sidelines, those two performances should put him under pressure, and he will need to hit the ground running when he is back in the team.

That is mainly because Aubameyang continues to show exactly why he is one of the best strikers on the planet. He has netted in all but one match so far this term, and his goals have come at huge moments.

His strike against United was the equaliser, whilst he also levelled against Tottenham and scored the winner against Aston Villa. Lacazette may have netted twice himself this term, but he just can’t compete with the former Borussia Dortmund man’s prolific goalscoring rate.

Of course, Emery has tried to shoehorn the two into the same side by playing Aubameyang on the wing on occasion, both this season and last.

Now, Nicolas Pepe has come in on the right, so he will no doubt make that position his own, but the left wing has remained a problem. The issue in the past has been the lack of consistent, reliable options, and the 30-year-old forward is no slouch from that flank, bagging 17 goals from 38 matches according to transfermarkt, although he is obviously better up top.

However, Saka may have given his manager a real alternative there. A natural left winger, the 18-year-old has scored one and assisted three in his first four matches of the campaign, and he has clearly impressed his manager, who gave him the nod at Old Trafford in such an important game. He appears to have already forged a connection with Aubameyang too, having assisted him twice this term.

Following their recent displays, Lacazette will need to remind Emery just how important he can be. Of course, such is his talent, he should get the chance to do so, but the former Sevilla boss will not be scared of bringing Saka into the side should he feel the France international is not giving him enough.
