Crystal Palace simply can’t afford to lose James McCarthy to Celtic

According to TEAMtalk, Celtic are interested in signing James McCarthy from Crystal Palace, but the Eagles simply can’t afford to let their midfield diamond go.

What’s the word?

The Bhoys want to bring McCarthy back to his hometown of Glasgow as they apparently see him as the obvious successor to club captain Scott Brown. Neil Lennon’s side have struggled for consistency so far this season, having lost two out of their last three games in all competitions.

However, they may have a tough task trying to prise McCarthy away from Selhurst Park, as a number of Premier League clubs have reportedly taken an interest in the Republic of Ireland international, including Burnley and Aston Villa.

The 30-year-old, who has played for Hamilton Academical in the past, is arguably exactly what Celtic need, although Lennon has previously warned his players that they can’t live off of their former glories, which implies that he doesn’t want to sign players who will be approaching the twilight of their careers.

But from Palace’s point of view, Roy Hodgson simply can’t afford to lose his midfield enforcer.

Keep McCarthy at all costs

Reunited with his old comrade James McArthur at Selhurst Park, McCarthy has turned out to be a shrewd signing since he arrived at the Eagles from Everton for £3m, after six seasons at Goodison Park.

Together, the ex-Hamilton pair have helped Hodgson’s side cement their place in the Premier League

McCarthy has played a combined 261 games in the Premier League for Palace, Everton and Wigan, winning 88 games and losing 104. On average, he produces nearly 42 passes per match, showing he is an important part of the supply chain for the likes of Jordan Ayew, Michy Batshuayi and Wilfried Zaha.

Whilst this might not seem like a lot, only Luka Milivojevic averages more passes per game from the midfield, which shows precisely what Hodgson has to work with.

Not only has McCarthy made 40 appearances for Palace, but he is also averaging 2.3 tackles, 1 interception and 1.2 clearances per game in the top flight this season, via WhoScored.

Valued at £4m via Transfermarkt, it would make little sense to essentially let him leave for a small profit, especially when you consider the fact that these kinds of numbers would be incredibly hard to replace in a winter transfer window that seems more uncertain than ever before, given the current unprecedented circumstances clubs are currently operating in.

Palace’s form has been patchy at best so far, as a promising start to the season – which saw Hodgson’s side stun Manchester United at Old Trafford – has quickly tailed off, with three defeats in their last four fixtures in the league.

It goes without saying that his potential departure would be a total disaster for Parish but a major coup for Celtic.

Exclusive: Chris Kirkland baffled by Keiren Westwood’s situation at Wednesday

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland has questioned the decision to exclude veteran Keiren Westwood from the squad this season.

The 36-year-old has not featured for the Owls in nearly a year with Garry Monk option to run with academy graduates Joe Wildsmith and Cameron Dawson instead, which is rather damning with the long-serving shot-stopper thought to be on around £30k-per-week at Hillsborough.

Westwood was not given a squad number for the 2020/21 season and has been left to train away from the first-team squad. He was also reportedly available for transfer during the summer but no approaches were made.

Kirkland, who worked with the experienced Owls man during his stint in south Yorkshire, is baffled by the situation and has called on Monk to bury the hatchet to save their season.

He told FFC:

“I think they’ve got an issue. I think you have to talk about the goalkeeper situation there.

“I have worked with both Joe [Wildsmith] and Cam [Dawson]. Keiren Westwood should be playing without a shadow of a doubt. He’s the best keeper there. He should still be playing in the Premier League but there’s obviously question marks. People talk about Keiren and his attitude and stuff like that, but he was always great with me. I had no issues with him there.

“Other managers have seen a problem there and that’s probably why Garry [Monk] isn’t playing him now because there is obviously an issue behind the scenes. You don’t keep somebody who is one of your top-earners and as good as he is on the bench unless there are big problems behind the scenes.

“With Keiren not playing, that’s a huge mystery. I think if they’re going to do anything this season, they’ve got to bury whatever has gone on. He’s got to get back playing –  and now.”

Westwood has played 179 times for Sheffield Wednesday and appears unlikely to play for the club ever again whilst Monk is still in charge, especially with his contract up at the end of the current campaign.

The Owls have only conceded ten goals so far this term, which is fewer than league-leading Reading, Brentford, Blackburn Rovers and Bristol City.

It remains to be seen what the exact issue is between Monk and Westwood, but clearly, Kirkland believes the Owls would be a far stronger side with the Republic of Ireland glovesman between the sticks than either of their younger options.

Forget Alfredo Morelos: Steven Davis shines in Glasgow Rangers thriller with Benfica

Glasgow Rangers threw away a 3-1 lead to draw with Benfica in Group D of the Europa League after Alfredo Morelos smashed the European goal record previously held by club legend Ally McCoist.

Morelos scored six minutes after the break to overtake McCoist as Rangers’ leading goalscorer in European competitions before Benfica bounced back with late goals from Rafa Silva and substitute Darwin Nunez.

Once again Glen Kamara was excellent, James Tavernier was a real threat on the right flank, but it was Steven Davis who stood out from the rest of the crowd.

Steven Davis vs Benfica

Davis continued his fine form for club and country by putting in an imperious performance in the midfield. He floated a wonderful ball over the top to release Ryan Kent, only for former Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi to make a cynical challenge, which left the referee with no choice but to send him off.

The 35-year-old then combined with the club captain for a comical equaliser after Tavernier’s pass was diverted into the back of the net by Benfica forward Diogo Goncalves.

SofaScore gave Davis a high grade of 7.1 for his efforts – the workhorse won five out of seven duels overall (71%), made three tackles and two interceptions, whilst he took 110 touches of the ball, provided 95 out of 101 accurate passes (94%) and completed 8 out of 10 long balls. A look at his heatmap reveals a hub of activity in the middle of the pitch, which just goes to show that he delivered a midfield masterclass in Lisbon last night.

It’s perhaps hardly surprising that the 117-cap Northern Ireland international received a high rating of 8/10 from GlasgowLive, who claimed that he “came up with two huge moments to get Rangers back into the match” and produced a “superb raking pass to Kent led to Otamendi’s red card, and clever pass to put Tavernier in to create equaliser”, whilst The Daily Record went one better, insisting it was “a sensational display from the midfielder, whose pass resulted in Otamendi red card before producing a peach to set up the second goal.”

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Gabriel Agbonlahor hailed his former Aston Villa teammate as “outstanding” after he delivered the goods against Benfica.

Davis has sent Gerrard a timely reminder after being left on the bench in the first game in the group stages against Standard Liege. Since then, he has barely missed a beat, and has surely cemented his place in the starting line-up.

Portsmouth: Pompey risk being ousted by Hull in Ben Woodburn loan race

Hull City have jumped ahead of Portsmouth in the race to sign Liverpool midfielder Ben Woodburn, according to Liverpool Echo.

Utilising the transfer market, Pompey manager Jackett has already signed Callum Johnson, Cameron Pring, Sean Raggett, Michael Jacobs and Rasmus Nicolaisen.

With the transfer window open until October 15, a number of new faces could potentially arrive at Fratton Park, but interest in Woodburn continues to linger in the background.

The 20-year-old’s future on Merseyside remains in the balance after head coach Jurgen Klopp opted to make him available for loan this season, following on from last term’s stint with Oxford United.

Featuring 16 times for Portsmouth’s League One play-off opponents, Woodburn suffered a fractured foot during the 2019/20 campaign but he managed one goal and five assists. (Transfermarkt).

With Pompey and Ipswich Town having previously hinted at their interest, it has now been reported that Hull are in advanced talks over a loan deal for Woodburn.

Woodburn has already won 10 caps for the Welsh national team, scoring twice for his country, and he should be a good addition for any side in League One.

Jackett is under heavy pressure to ensure promotion this term and his business may be scrutinised if results do not materialise, so a signing like Woodburn could be a fantastic one to pull off and a regrettable one to miss out upon if Hull beat them to the chase.

Tottenham v Leicester City: Team News, Form, How to Watch

Tottenham Hotspur host Leicester City in North London on Sunday in a game that has the potential to make the battle for a top-four finish even more interesting.

Spurs can’t mathematically sneak into the top-four but they’re in a good position to at least secure a place in next season’s Europa League. Leicester, though, are nervously looking over their shoulders in fourth as they bid to keep possession of the last remaining qualification position and away from the chasing Manchester United and Wolves.

Both sides have suffered indifferent form since football’s restart and will be relatively disappointed at not picking up more points over the last month or so.

Jose Mourinho’s men have actually lost just once during that period, but that came via a woeful 3-1 defeat at Sheffield United, who subsequently are looking to beat them to a Europa League spot. A goalless draw at Bournemouth will also be seen as a two huge points dropped as Spurs head into their final two games of the campaign.

Leicester looked to have had the top-four all wrapped up when football was postponed, but since the restart they’ve struggled, picking up just two wins from the seven league matches they’ve played since June. It means they’re now clinging on to a place in next season’s Champions League by their fingernails, and defeat here sets up a potentially huge winner takes all clash with Manchester United on the final day.

Form

As we’ve already established, Tottenham’s form on paper doesn’t look terrible but their failure to pick up maximum points against both Bournemouth and top eight rivals Sheffield United means they’re now contemplating a year without European football altogether if they don’t end the season strongly.

Spurs are unbeaten in four matches since that collapse at Bramall Lane but if a Europa League place is not secured, 19/20 will forever be known as a failure for the club, just a year on from reaching the Champions League final.

Leicester boosted their confidence with a 2-0 win over Sheffield United on Thursday night and simply must follow that up with a win here if they’re to remain favourites for the top-four, but they have failed to win their last seven away matches in the Premier League, while Spurs have maximum points from their last three at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Team News

Serge Aurier has travelled back to France to be his family following the tragic death of his brother earlier this week and as a result, is not expected to feature this weekend.

Tanguy Ndombele’s knee injury has left him sidelined for the rest of the campaign, while Dele Alli is a huge doubt because of a hamstring problem.

For Brendan Rodgers, it’s a case of trying to get through the rest of the season without losing any more key players. Ben Chilwell and James Maddison have both been ruled out of the final two games of the campaign, while Caglar Soyuncu is suspended following his red card against Bournemouth last weekend.

How to Watch

Fans can watch this huge Premier League clash on Sunday 19 Juy at 4pm, with the game being shown on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League, while fans can also catch it via live football streams.

Kingsley Coman could bring a winner’s mentality to Old Trafford

Manchester United have gone seven years without winning a Premier League title, the club’s longest dry-spell since the league’s rebrand in 1992.

It’s no secret that many believe that the big issue at the club is a weakened mentality since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, with Gary Neville or Roy Keane seemingly ranting about that exact issue on Sky Sports every couple of weeks or so.

United seem to be getting back on track when it comes to talent on the pitch, they’ve won six of their first eight league games since the restart, and one player they’re reportedly looking into signing could help bring back the winning mentality that has seemingly been lacking.

The Athletic have reported that the Red Devils are looking into the possibility of bringing in Kingsley Coman as an alternative to Jadon Sancho.

On face value, Coman doesn’t look to be as good as Sancho, the Frenchman has 26 fewer goal contributions in the league than the Dortmund star this term, but despite that, the 24-year-old can bring something that Sancho may not have.

Indeed, the Bayern man may not score or assist as much as the England international, but it’s impossible to deny the fact that he is a born winner.

Coman has won eight league titles in a row throughout his spells with PSG, Juventus and Bayern Munich, and being in a title-winning dressing room that often is bound to breed a winning mentality.

The winger has what it takes to play a part in a title-winning side, and that could be huge in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s quest to lead United back to glory in the coming years.

If Coman can come in and bring that sort of attitude to the squad, it could be huge for the Red Devils.
