Former Leeds man Danny Mills rips into Andrea Radrizzani

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

How long is this story is going to run?

You imagine it’s going to get a lot of coverage when the teams meet again in January, but for now it’s still quite a talking point.

After the defeat to Millwall, Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani sent out a tweet in which he heavily criticised the EFL and their lack of VAR, insinuating that it was directly responsible in helping the Lions to victory when the home side were awarded a penalty and had defender Gaetano Berardi sent off, although the red card was later rescinded.

What’s been said?

Former Leeds United defender Danny Mills spoke to Football Insider about the matter, and he thinks that the owner was out of order for the way he handled the situation:

“It’s not a great idea, is it? In this day and age it’s hard when people want to hear from the chairman but some of the best chairman and best owners are the ones who just stay silent. Let the manager, let the coach, let the team do the talking.

“Maybe it’s just a little bit of frustration from Radrizzani, of course he wants to do well, he wants his team to do well. Saying things on Twitter about officials and teams and players is never a good idea.”

What should be done?

And Danny Mills is exactly right here. There has to be a certain level of expectation and behavioural standard depending on how high up the hierarchy you go, and you can see a clear example in other sports.

Whilst it may be an unwritten rule, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has stated that “Owners, management personnel and coaches must be held to a higher standard than players” when it comes to incidents of ‘misconduct’, but the logic still applies here.

Opinions like this should be made by the players, coaches and to a lesser extent the fans. And if an owner or another high ranking member of the board does want to voice their views, then it should be in a more dignified manner than an angry rant on Twitter.

It’s not that we should be restricting people from having their views, in fact so long as they’re legal and non-offensive, the more the better because it encourages debate.

But there’s a time and a place for them to happen, and an angry tweet in the aftermath of a defeat is not the way to go about it for someone who should know better.

Conor Hourihane display brings huge praise from Aston Villa fans

Conor Hourihane was on the scoresheet in Aston Villa’s 5-1 win over Norwich City in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The midfielder netted Villa’s fourth of the match at Carrow Road, and his performance led to a number of the club’s fans calling for him to start more matches.

Hourihane actually only played 24 minutes of Premier League football for Dean Smith’s side between August 17 and September 22.

The 28-year-old was handed the full 90 minutes against Burnley last weekend, though, before playing for 77 minutes against Norwich on Saturday.

Operating in a midfield three, Hourihane, who has also featured twice in the EFL Cup this season, had an 85% pass success rate, according to WhoScored.

And his outing against the Canaries impressed a whole host of the Villa supporters, with some calling for him to be used more frequently from the start of matches.

West Brom’s Hal Robson-Kanu may have to be called upon soon

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

West Brom entered the off-season with an air of uncertainty having just lost in the playoffs with no permanent manager at the helm.

But they have come out the other side of it all the better as Slaven Bilic took the reins and has guided them to an unbeaten start in the league.

Sunday afternoon’s victory over Huddersfield gave them a fourth win in eight matches, moving them into fourth position, just a single point off the league-leading duo of Leeds United and Swansea City.

Having gone ever so close last season, it seems as if the Croatian could be the man to actually take them into the top-flight, they’ll have every chance of doing so if they keep this up.

There are a couple of negatives that will need ironing out as the season goes on, most notably their lack of clean sheets but for now, it’ll do. We’re only entering October after all.

The other struggle is in terms of the lack of goals from their new frontline – Charlie Austin joined for £4m on deadline day from Southampton and is yet to score his first league goal while Kenneth Zohore cost double that and has only netted twice from the spot.

It’s a stark contrast to last season where the Baggies attack was dangerous, exciting and most importantly extremely goal-laden.

Jay Rodriguez and Dwight Gayle scored 46 between them alone with Harvey Barnes chipping in during the first half of the campaign with nine too.

But none of them remain at the club, hence the arrivals of Austin and Zohore this summer.

Although, there is a familiar figure still amongst their ranks – Hal Robson-Kanu, who surely thought he would have been given a chance with Gayle returning to Newcastle United, Rodriguez being sold to Burnley and even Solomon Rondon departing for pastures new.

An injury has mainly played a part in his absence from the squad – only playing 61 minutes all season, eight of which came on Sunday as a substitute.

Less than 24 hours later, the Welshman scored a brace for the U23s to ramp up his recovery – might he be an unlikely hero to put a stop to their forwards’ impotence in front of goal? He’s certainly a potential solution worth weighing up.

Playing against kids is no comparison to what the Championship has to offer, but it at least shows he is raring to prove a point if allowed to do so.

He’s hardly been a prolific scorer over his career either, scoring just 49 goals in 370 career appearances, but Transfermarkt suggests he’s played the bulk of his career from out wide.

We’ll soon see if he can have an impact on Albion’s goalscoring fortunes.

Newcastle fans react to Steve Bruce’s starting XI for Leicester clash

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Newcastle fans have been reacting on Twitter after Steve Bruce named his starting XI for the Carabao Cup clash against Leicester City.

He’s back – Ayoze Perez returns to Tyneside tonight for the first time since departing this summer in a £30m deal.

The Foxes have put out a pretty strong XI, but the Magpies’ lack of depth has certainly reared its ugly head.

Allan Saint-Maximin is expected to be out for around three weeks after aggravating a hamstring issue against Tottenham, while several other players are suffering from knocks.

And while the win at Spurs’ incredible new home will have raised spirits both in the dressing room and in the stands, fans aren’t feeling too confident after the announcement of tonight’s team.

The first thing that jumps out is the lack of a recognised striker, with Yoshinori Muto seemingly leading the line, supported by the ever-versatile Matt Ritchie.

Liverpool fans react to news Jose Mourinho rejected Virgil van Dijk at Man United

[ad_pod ]

The Independent report that Jose Mourinho rejected the opportunity to sign Virgil van Dijk when manager of Manchester United, and it is a revelation which has amused a portion of Liverpool fans.

Some believe the 28-year-old was always destined for a move to Anfield and it therefore didn’t matter if there was interest from the Red Devils, but if true it seems like an odd decision from the Portuguese boss.

The Reds were interested in the centre-back for much of the summer of 2017 but with Southampton unwilling to sell, the Dutch international wasn’t able to make the switch until January.

In that time, it could have been possible for another club to step in, and with van Dijk keen to play Champions League football he may have accepted a transfer to Old Trafford.

Instead, Mourinho opted against the move, a decision which he now likely regrets as he finds himself out of work, and particularly as vthe Dutchman was recently named UEFA Men’s Player of the Year following some outstanding performances at the back for the Merseyside outfit.

Here are some of the responses from Liverpool fans, with some suggesting they made van Dijk the player he is now.

Tottenham fans react to Christian Eriksen contract update

[ad_pod ]

According to Sky Sports, Christian Eriksen is set to remain with Tottenham Hotspur this summer and potentially even sign a new contract with the club.

Eriksen will see his current deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium expire at the end of the 2019-20 campaign.

The Denmark international continues to be linked with a move away from Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

However, according to Sky Sports, Real Madrid are now prioritising a move for Manchester United’s Paul Pogba, meaning that Eriksen is likely to remain with Spurs and sign a new deal with the capital outfit.

The former Ajax playmaker was not always at his best last season, but still managed 10 goals and 17 assists in all competitions for Pochettino’s team.

Manchester United fans react as Aston Villa line up Tuanzebe loan

[ad_pod ]

One of the highlights of Aston Villa’s promotion campaign last season, Axel Tuanzebe enjoyed an impressive season-long loan at Villa Park from Manchester United.

The 21-year-old forged a fine partnership at the back alongside Tyrone Mings and returned to United this summer with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s approval.

However, according to The Telegraph, despite being named on United’s pre-season tour, Villa are prepared to “play the waiting game” with Tuanzebe to see if the defender is made available for another loan spell away later on in the window.

After hearing the news the Midlands club were interested in taking on Tuanzebe for the upcoming campaign, United fans took to Twitter to voice their opinion on the matter.

Many Red Devils supporters felt that a year in the top-flight could do the centre-back’s career the world of good and give him regular first-team football again.

Indeed, many felt that seeing the England U21 international fail to get game-time on the United bench would stall his progression and urged him to get some much-needed Premier League experience.
