Umar Gul winning fitness race

Umar Gul, who suffered a stiff hamstring during the second Test at Edgbaston, has recovered completely from the injury and is likely to be available for selection for the final Test of the England series, which begins on Thursday at Lord’s

Nagraj Gollapudi at Lord's24-Aug-2010Umar Gul, who suffered a stiff hamstring during the second Test at Edgbaston, has recovered completely from the injury and is likely to be available for selection for the final Test of the England series, which begins on Thursday at Lord’s.”We can’t say anything for certain but we are hopeful,” Salman Butt, the Pakistan captain said. It was feared that Gul would take no further part in the Test series when he first picked up the injury but Gul, who is Pakistan’s most experience fast bowler, has been working hard with Dale Nyler, the team physio, and trainer David Dwyer, to bounce back. While his team-mates were scripting Pakistan’s remarkable victory in the third Test, Gul was on the sidelines where he bowled ‘no-effort’ balls which involved him charging in from a full run-up and going through the remainder of his action before finishing the sequence without delivering the ball. The exercise was essential to determine if the injury was healing fast.”So far his recovery has gone as desired,” Dwyer said. But both him and Nyler will have a final look on Wednesday morning before giving their final assessment on Gul’s fitness to the team management which will sit in the evening to pick the playing eleven. For the last two days Gul has progressed to bowling flat out without any cause for concern. At the indoor training centre at Lord’s he bowled marathon spells of nearly 90 minutes and was happily sharing tips with Wahab Riaz, the man who replaced him in the previous Test.Gul’s recovery is good news for Pakistan, who are spoilt with riches in the bowling department. At The Oval last week, Riaz, the left-handed quick, made a memorable debut by claiming 5 for 63 on the first day to help set up Pakistan’s four-wicket victory. Riaz earned further points on the second morning when he offered stubborn resistance with the bat. His 27 logged over a two hours, and he stitched a 34-run partnership with Mohammad Yousuf for the third wicket to rob England of the chance of putting pressure on the Pakistan middle-order.Gul won’t be worried about the competition. At Trent Bridge he top scored with 65 in addition to a match haul of 4 for 102. At Edgbaston he was forced off the field after bowling nine wicketless overs in the first innings but batted with a runner to bolster Pakistan’s lead with a 27-run stand with Mohammad Asif for the last wicket.Gul will have fond memories of playing at Lord’s, after performing well there against Australia earlier in the year. He was on the verge of a hat-trick during Australia’s second innings and finished the match with five wickets. Waqar Younis, Pakistan’s coach, was positive about Gul but remained non-committal about his availability for the final Test: “We will have to see tomorrow and then decide.”

West Ham: Hammers open talks for Lucas Digne

West Ham have opened talks with Everton regarding a move for left-back Lucas Digne, according to The Daily Mail.

The Lowdown: Moyes after a left-back

David Moyes has been without first-choice left-back Aaron Cresswell for the club’s last seven Premier League games due to injury.

As a result, the Hammers are keen to bolster their left-back ranks, with head of recruitment Rob Newman also after a centre-back and a forward during the January transfer window.

Digne, labelled as ‘quality’ by pundit Paddy Kenny, appears to be a player surplus to requirements at Goodison Park following a reported disagreement with Rafa Benitez.

The Toffees have since brought in Vitaliy Mykolenko, and it seems as if West Ham are keen to take advantage of Digne’s situation.

The Latest: West Ham discussions

The Daily Mail shared a story late on Wednesday evening, claiming the Hammers have begun talks with Everton for the French full-back.

Chelsea and Newcastle have also been name-checked with an interest, but it appears as if it’s Newman and West Ham who are making moves.

The Verdict: A gamble?

It may well be a one-off with Benítez, but it could be a gamble bringing a player to the club who has had previous when it comes to disagreements with managers.

Moyes is reportedly being cautious when it comes to winter window additions, so he may well have some worries when it comes to Digne following the recent fall out on Merseyside with a well-known and respected coach.

Everton also want around £30m, meaning he could be the club’s fourth-biggest signing of all time, so you could argue a move for the 28-year-old may be a risk.

Perhaps a younger target who can eventually succeed Cresswell full-time would be more fitting.

Spurs: Paratici pushing for Rudiger swoop

Tottenham Hotspur sporting director Fabio Paratici is eager to sign Antonio Rudiger…

What’s the word?

That’s according to Football Insider, who claim the Lilywhites recruitment chief is “calling every day” to try and win the race to sign the out-of-contract Chelsea centre-back.

The 28-year-old has emerged as a ‘top target’ for Spurs as they look to sign him for nothing in the summer following his likely departure from Stamford Bridge.

However, despite the Italian being in constant contact with Rudiger’s camp, the north Londoners face stiff competition from some of Europe’s biggest teams, including Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Major upgrade

Despite his contractual situation, Blues boss Thomas Tuchel has continued to trust the German international to regularly start matches, featuring 25 times across the Premier League and Champions League.

After securing a winners’ medal in the latter competition last season, Rudiger would undoubtedly be a massive upgrade on several of Antonio Conte’s current options at Spurs and his familiarity with not just the English top-flight, but the Italian manager himself would help tenfold.

He has recorded 45 of his 176 appearances for the Chelsea under Conte. They even won the 2017/18 FA Cup together, leading to the German describing his boss as a “very good coach” to reporters at the time.

Rudiger has averaged 2.1 aerial duels won, 1.3 tackles and an 86.4% passing accuracy, having been only one of two players to register over 1,400 minutes in the Premier League this term, as per WhoScored, who also state his strengths as being passing and more crucially concentration.

The £31.5m-rated colossus has been one of Chelsea’s standout performers over the past 12 months, with BT Sport pundit and Premier League legend Rio Ferdinand a big fan of his.

“Look at Rudiger, he’s arguably, since Tuchel has been there [at Chelsea], been the best defender in the Premier League,” he told his podcast (via the Metro). “Him or [Ruben] Dias in that time. He’s been unbelievable, he’s like an animal.”

Both Japhet Tanganga and Davinson Sanchez, who has previously been lambasted as a “liability” to Spurs have struggled in recent games and neither are up to the standard of Rudiger, given his vast experience and trophy history.

Paratici could land a massive upgrade on the latter with an ambitious swoop for the Chelsea star this summer.

Spurs source shares big Rudiger update

According to a Tottenham Hotspur source, speaking to Football Insider, a development has come to light in transfer chief Fabio Paratici’s chase to sign Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye Rudiger move…

As the Italian managing director reportedly eyes ‘quality players at zero cost’ for Spurs boss Antonio Conte, it is believed that London rival centre-half Rudiger is firmly on the agenda.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

This comes amid the German’s precarious contract situation at Stamford Bridge with Rudiger free to leave for nothing at the end of 2021/2022 as things stand.

Foreign clubs hold an advantage in the race for Chelsea’s star man given they can formally agree pre-contract moves in January but Paratici and Spurs are still contending.

In an update, Football Insider have shared the latest from their N17 sources.

The Latest: Paratici calling…

According to their information, Spurs chief Paratici is ‘calling every day’ as he keeps in constant contact with Rudiger’s camp over a move.

He is apparently a ‘top target’ with Tottenham ‘working on agreeing a deal’ this month and it believed that Paratici is heading the club’s attempt.

The site also reiterate that he is backed by chairman Daniel Levy who is willing to pay Rudiger ‘huge’ wages to tempt him into a move across London.

The Verdict: Get it done…

Out of all Tottenham’s centre-back targets, the 28-year-old is certainly up there as a real potential coup and landing him for Conte would be a stroke of genius – especially for no transfer fee.

It will be difficult considering the Lilywhites are one of Chelsea’s main capital rivals and the presence of overseas suitors in the race complicates matters further.

However, if Spurs can navigate these stumbling blocks, there is little denying he would strengthen Conte’s options to no end – with pundit Rio Ferdinand calling Rudiger an ‘animal’ and comparing him to Man City star Ruben Dias (FIVE via The Metro).

Meanwhile, another former England international in Paul Robinson certainly believes Spurs should move – telling Football Insider the international’s capture would be a ‘big signing’ and a ‘big statement’.

Spurs in pole position for Kessie

Taking to Twitter, Sportitalia TV journalist Rudy Galetti has broken a promising update on Tottenham Hotspur’s chase to sign AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye Kessie deal…

It is no secret that Tottenham and manager Antonio Conte hold a firm interest in the Ivory Coast international with reliable sources backing that they are well and truly in the mix.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Kessie’s deal at the San Siro expires in 2022 as things stand with clubs reportedly racing to sign him, either for a cheap January fee or on a pre-contract ahead of a summer switch.

Spurs hold an interest in backing Conte with his signing as managing director Fabio Paratici eyes a move, with Galetti now sharing what he’s heard in a promising development.

The Latest: Galetti breaks Kessie update…

Taking to social media, the Italian journalist has broken an update that Tottenham are now ‘in the lead’ ahead of fellow contenders Paris-Saint Germain and an unnamed Premier League club as they enter pole position.

Galetti also explains that Milan’s star asset has a ‘€8m+€2m’ (£6.6m + £1.6m) salary offer on the table from Spurs, with a total wage package equalling £8.2m-per-season.

The Verdict: Promising development…

News that Spurs are leading contenders for Kessie’s signature as things stand will come as music to the ears of supporters, especially considering his pedigree in Italy.

The midfield man, called ‘extraordinary’ by ESPN pundit Nicky Bandini, has thrived going forward in recent seasons despite being a natural defensive anchor in front of the back four.

Following his 13 Serie A strikes last season with five this campaign, Kessie could provide that degree of threat from central midfield and it is clear that, for free, he could be a very astute potential signing.

Matt Ritchie let Newcastle down v Arsenal

Eddie Howe’s first game in the dugout in charge of Newcastle United ended with a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Arsenal, keeping his side at the bottom of the Premier League table.

Goals from Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli secured the three points for Mikel Arteta’s side in a tough lunchtime fixture for the Toon.

One player in a Newcastle shirt who certainly let Howe down on the day with his performance was Matt Ritchie.

Deployed as a left-back on this occasion, the 32-year-old only played 67 minutes before being replaced by Miguel Almiron as Howe looked to get something from the game.

In those 67 minutes, Ritchie had significantly fewer touches of the ball (17) than Toon goalkeeper Martin Dubravka (50), whilst completing just six of his nine passes, along with two failed cross attempts and two failed long ball passes.

Ritchie failed to have an impact off the ball either by losing 100% of his five duels, getting dribbled past on three occasions and picking up a yellow card in the process.

This performance ultimately earned the 32-year-old, who is currently earning £45k-per-week according to Spotrac, a poor overall match rating of 5.7/10 from SofaScore, making him the lowest-rated Toon player on the day.

With Newcastle now having conceded 29 goals in 13 league games, it’s safe to say that Howe has a big challenge on his hands to improve the defence and keep the club in the Premier League.

Looking at his performance today, Ritchie should be worried about his place in the team if he can’t improve and help them to get some much-needed points on the board.

However, given his impressive performance against Brentford last weekend where he grabbed an assist, perhaps this was just a bad day at the office for Ritchie against a tough opponent who are now 17 points ahead of the Magpies.

With Newcastle set to take on fellow strugglers Norwich City in midweek, this will undoubtedly be a huge game for the Tynesiders to finally get a win under their belts.

It will also be interesting to see whether or not Howe sticks with Ritchie in the starting XI given the dramatic difference in performance level he has produced in his two previous league appearances.

West Ham United: Whelan’s verdict on Bowen’s future amid Liverpool interest

Noel Whelan has tipped West Ham to fight for a Jarrod Bowen contract extension amid interest from Liverpool and believes that the Hammers’ league position will determine the outcome, as per Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Liverpool long-term admirers of Bowen

The Liverpool Echo have claimed that Liverpool are long-term admirers of the West Ham winger, and they will continue to scout the 24-year-old with a potential move on the cards in the summer transfer window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Bowen has had an impressive start to the 2021/22 campaign; he currently leads the Hammers in assists in the Premier League, having produced five this season.

The English attacker has also gained valuable experience on the European stage. Bowen has appeared in five games in the Irons’ Europa League campaign, adding an extra goal and assist to his tally for the season.

The Latest: Whelan issues verdict on potential exit

According to a Rush Green source at Football insider, West Ham are planning on offering Bowen a new and improved contract, despite his current deal running until summer 2025.

And Whelan claims that the Hammers will make an effort to do anything to keep the player at the club, insisting that the team’s league position at the end of the season will determine the outcome of Bowen’s future. Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “This is what happens when players are standing out in a team that’s been very successful like West Ham.

“He’s a player that I enjoy watching. His energy, his quality on the ball, he can play down the middle, on the right and left. He’s a player that you would fit the Liverpool bill of what they want across that front three.

“Would West Ham let him go? I think they’ll do everything possible to keep him at West Ham, quite frankly. I think it’ll all come down to how successful West Ham are at the end of the season. Where they are in the league.

“It’s going be interesting. I admire him, he’s a great player, he really is. That energy, that quality on the ball, the link-up play he has.

“I can see why Liverpool would be tempted and interested in a player like that.”

The Verdict: Bowen could stay following recent success

With West Ham’s magnificent start to the season landing them in fourth place, the Hammers are well and truly in the running for Champions League qualification – they have already beat Liverpool and Chelsea, which shows exactly how competitive they can stay amongst the league challengers.

According to Whelan, this could sway Bowen into signing a contract extension and ultimately commit his career to the club.

The former Hull starlet has of course received lots of praise this season – Gary Neville has commented on how the winger “is a bundle of energy” and that ‘he is brilliant to watch”.

Perhaps to Hammers fans’ dismay, Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has continually praised him over the past year too, culminating with the German saying: “I like Bowen a lot.”

O camisa 7 recebeu muitos elogios e provavelmente será o titular.
