An update has emerged on the fitness of Rangers central midfielder Ryan Jack, via an insider source… 

What’s the latest?

Close friend of Ryan Jack and former Gers star Greg Stewart has revealed that the midfielder is not too far away from being back in action for the club.

Stewart has claimed that Jack will be ‘like a new signing’ for the Gers and that he has heard the 29-year-old is closing in on his return.

He told the Daily Record:

“It’s been a difficult one for Ryan.

“He’s had a couple of problems but from what I hear it won’t be long before he’s back on the pitch. That’s great news – it will be like a new signing for the team, because we’ve missed him.

“Every team would miss having a Ryan Jack in their line-up as he’s got a bit of everything about him. He even chips in with a few goals, which is great for a midfielder. Once he’s back, it will be like he’s got a new lease of life and I can’t wait to see him out there again.”

Gerrard will be buzzing

Jack’s last appearance for the Gers came back in February and he recently took to Instagram to post a picture of his muddy boots on the floor of what appeared to be a changing room.

His post left plenty to speculate over in regards to what stage he is at in his recovery, but these quotes from his close friend provide a better perspective as he has stated that Jack is not too far away from being fit.

Gerrard is surely buzzing with this news as it will be a welcome boost to his team in the coming weeks and months.

Jack adds another central midfield option for him to call upon in the Scottish Premiership and Europa League, which could make him feel like a new signing, as Stewart explained. It also allows him to rest and rotate his other options in that area of the pitch.

Back in 2019, the Teddy Bears head coach lauded Jack as a leader within the squad as he demands everyone around him to up their levels. He said:

“Ryan is an example for the rest of the squad because he never drops his standards, whether it’s a training session or a game.

“He knits everything together, he drives the team on, he demands from everyone else around him.”

This suggests that Gerrard will love to have Jack back in contention to play as he could raise the standard of those playing alongside him and lift the XI overall.

Whilst you can debate his own merits as a player and whether, as an individual, he is better than the likes of John Lundstram, Steven Davis, Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo, his leadership – as explained by Gerrard – could be an immeasurable boost to the Gers.

A new governing structure for the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) is expected to be finalised at a stakeholders’ meeting in March 2009. The development comes after a meeting of the CARICOM’s prime ministerial sub-committee on cricket under new chairman Baldwin Spencer, Antigua and Barbuda’s prime minister.”Out of that [meeting in March] will come hopefully an understanding as to how we are going to proceed with the creation of a new governance structure for the West Indies Cricket Board,” Spencer told the agency. “In the meantime the expectation is that the prime ministerial sub-committee will meet at least once to receive a report from the president of the WICB.”The sub-committee reviewed the recommendations of the governance committee, led by former Jamaican prime minister PJ Patterson, on the management of the game in the region as well as the board’s draft strategic plan, and found some common ground between the two.”What came out of our deliberations are that there are major areas of agreement between the committee’s report and the draft strategic plan that has been put forward by the West Indies Cricket Board,” Spencer said. “The issue of the development of a governing structure that will drive the process of West Indies cricket in the future is a matter that will occupy the attention of the board moving forward.”However, Spencer added that while the governance committee will have future meetings with stakeholders that it won’t take over from the WICB. “As it stands now, the board is the shareholder of the company if you like, and what you need is to get the stakeholders involved at the broadest possible level.”The WICB was represented president Julian Hunte and chief executive officer Donald Peters at the meeting in Antigua.

Some Liverpool supporters have reacted negatively to a report claiming the Reds are interested in signing Reading youngster Femi Azeez.

It has been a quiet summer on the transfer front at Anfield, with rivals bringing in huge names but Jurgen Klopp appearing content with his squad.

Celtic are now ‘in talks’ with Shamrock Rovers over a possible move for versatile defender Liam Scales, according to The Irish Mirror’s Paul O’Hehir.

The Lowdown: Scales profiled

Scales is 22 years of age and is under contract with Rovers until the end of the 2022 season.

The Republic of Ireland under-21 international, who stands at 6 foot 3, has made 45 appearances for his current employers, two of which have come this season in Champions League qualifying.

Scales turned out as a centre-back, left-back, left-midfielder and in a defensive midfield role last season, and it appears as if the Hoops like what they see in the youngster.

After a crucial win over their Dublin arch-rivals Bohemians last term, Shamrock Rovers manager Stephen Bradley said of the youngster: “I thought Liam showed tremendous composure at times, when the ball came out he was either chesting or heading down to his teammates or taking touches.

“I thought he was really, really good. He’s been very good since he came in, he’s improving all the time. He has a real high level of ability and can keep improving.”

The Latest: Celtic in talks

According to O’Hehir, further discussions between Celtic and Shamrock Rovers were set to take place on Monday, with a number of Championship clubs in England keen on Scales.

Dermot Desmond has a 25% stake in the Irish champions, and O’Hehir’s report claimed that a deal could be completed quickly once both clubs are happy.

Celtic may have to pay a ‘significant’ six-figure fee for Scales’ services, according to the Irish Examiner’s John Fallon.

The Verdict: A handy addition?

Scales is clearly highly regarded by a number of clubs who have shown interest, so he could be a useful signing for Celtic if they can land him.

He’s able to play in four different positions and would therefore provide cover in a number of areas in Ange Postecoglou’s squad.

You’d expect that Desmond’s association with both clubs could help a Parkhead switch to materialise, so this may well be a deal to keep a close eye on over the course of the week.

Aston Villa are expected to test Southampton’s resolve with another bid for captain James Ward-Prowse, which is undoubtedly a blow to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s hopes of keeping him.

What’s the word?

According to Saints Extra on Twitter, Villa believe that it could cost them up to £50m to sign the England international this summer but will attempt to negotiate a lower fee with Southampton.

They also suggest that a second bid is likely, which was also suggested by The Athletic in their initial report on Villa’s interest in Ward-Prowse after Dean Smith’s side recently submitted a £25m bid.

Could Ward-Prowse leave?

Fortunately for Southampton, Ward-Prowse is contracted at St Mary’s until 2024 and having come through the academy, you would hope that he will be loyal to the club should another Premier League side offer him a significant wage increase.

You could also argue that, whilst Aston Villa are clearly spending big this summer, with Emiliano Buendia and Leon Bailey having already arrived at Villa Park for £30m apiece, they are not too far ahead of Southampton in terms of being an established Premier League side.

Although they were much improved last season, they only managed to scrape Premier League survival in the 2019/20 season, which was aided by the goal technology system failing to work in a home draw against Sheffield United.

However, with Jack Grealish looking likely to seal a £100m move to Manchester City, the Birmingham-based club are not short on funds, and there is no telling on how much they would be willing to spend on a player such as Ward-Prowse.

The 26-year-old is a hugely important part of Hasenhuttl’s squad and was the Austrian’s most consistent performer in a less than consistent 2020/21 campaign for Southampton, so it would be a huge blow to lose him so close to the new season.

Therefore, Southampton fans will definitely be worried by this latest transfer report, as they will surely be desperate to keep Ward-Prowse at the club.
