Warwickshire hold on at Aigburth

Lancashire’s match against Warwickshire at Liverpool ended in a draw, but only after a late flurry of wickets just failed to secure a dramatic victory for the home side

Gary Keedy had Will Porterfield caught and bowled and picked up two more wickets, but Warwickshire survived the final day in Liverpool•PA PhotosLancashire had not drawn at Liverpool in nine matches since 2004 and only once previously this season, the latter fact a consequence of increasing the value of a win to 16 points and flat pitches becoming a rare commodity.Glen Chapple, the Lancashire captain and a cricketer reassuringly respectful of traditional values, mused recently that in his view there was merit still in a hard-earned draw, so it was a little ironic that he should find himself on the wrong end of one here as Warwickshire ultimately achieved their objective in a gripping finale.Warwickshire were aided by the weather, which restricted play to 31 balls before 1.15pm and cost another half-hour in the afternoon. But they still wound up facing 68 overs on a turning pitch and against arguably the best exponent of such conditions on the circuit in Gary Keedy, Lancashire’s veteran left-arm spinner. In the end it was captivatingly close as Warwickshire, who had seemed home and dry at 217 for 6 entering what they thought was the last over, lost two wickets in the space of five balls to part-time offspinner Steven Croft, then breathed deep sighs of relief only to be told there was time within the limits of the mandatory last hour for another over. These six balls offered a picture of Tim Ambrose, who was Warwickshire’s hero, in the end, with an unbeaten 66, surrounded by a cluster of eight close fielders as well as wicketkeeper Gareth Cross as Keedy wheeled in. Ambrose cannot have had many similar experiences but after two blocks, a sweep, a rejected lbw appeal, a leg-side leave and another soft-handed dead bat, it was all over and after two hours and 17 minutes the former England wicketkeeper had survived. It was a draw deserved, moreover, because Warwickshire had been in no way negative, at least until it was reasonable to be so. Presented at the start with potentially 75 overs to chase 280 and win the match themselves, they sent in Neil Carter, their one-day opener, to take on the new ball, and he and Varun Chopra could not have been more purposeful. They rattled along at almost five an over without giving Lancashire any encouragement, but their ambitions were necessarily scaled down after they lost four wickets for 20 runs in seven overs.Carter edged Saj Mahmood to Tom Smith at second slip and then Keedy, with his fourth ball, took a diving return catch to dismiss Will Porterfield. Chopra perished caught behind to an ugly slash at Kyle Hogg out of keeping with the rest of his innings and then Keedy claimed a second scalp when Jim Troughton flicked one round the corner to leg slip. Now Warwickshire needed to dig in and tough it out and that it took Lancashire another 27 overs to make more inroads was down to Ambrose and Laurie Evans, who does not have the benefit of his colleague’s experience yet who showed exceptional application and concentration for almost two hours before edging Hogg to second slip. When Rikki Clarke – thwarted earlier in his bid to take the world record for catches in an innings when Troughton got under Hogg’s skier off Boyd Rankin – fell for 12 at 210 for 6, caught at slip as Keedy took his third wicket, six overs remained.Time looked to be on Warwickshire’s side and ultimately was, although not until Croft had bowled both Chris Woakes and Jeetan Patel and caused some serious apprehension on the visiting balcony. With Somerset securing a third straight win, the race for the title is splendidly poised, with Warwickshire in a potentially strong position still by virtue of their game in hand, even though the result pushes them back into fourth place. Any one of the top four could be champions, which Lancashire coach Peter Moores acknowledged afterwards.”It is set well for a good run-in,” he said. “It depends on who holds their nerve and who has players in form at the right time. This was a great game of cricket. Both sides got stuck in and had opportunities to win it and it is a shame we didn’t have another session.”Somerset are coming up on the blind side, which we always thought they would. I like playing against sides who are in the title race with us and I’m pleased we have got Somerset in the last game of the season because we can control that fixture.”We have been up there all the way through, we have shown a lot of fight and character and found ways to win games. I don’t think we need to win all four of our remaining games. If we won two we would be in with a shout, three and we would be in with a very big chance and if we do win all four we will definitely win it.”Normally if you win 10 in a season that would be enough and often it would be less than that. This year it is unique because there are so many teams involved.”

Players can't ignore IPL lure – Law

Stuart Law has expressed sympathy with Lasith Malinga’s decision to quit Tests but has also acknowledged that the lure of the IPL makes it difficult for players to continue playing international cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Apr-2011Stuart Law, Sri Lanka’s interim coach, has expressed sympathy with Lasith Malinga’s decision to quit Test cricket due to a knee condition, but has also acknowledged that the lure of the IPL – with its bumper signings and opportunities to secure oneself financially in quick time – makes it difficult for players to continue playing international cricket. He added it was important to keep India “sweet”, as that’s where a significant part of the revenue for several cricket boards lies.Malinga made himself unavailable for Sri Lanka’s upcoming tour of England and announced his decision to quit Tests because of a “long-standing degenerative condition in the right knee”. While the condition made it difficult for him to play in the longest format, he intends to continue playing limited-overs cricket, and is currently the leading wicket-taker in the IPL, where he represents Mumbai Indians.”‘It’s disappointing that he doesn’t want to play [the] longer [format cricket] but you can’t make [force] a guy who goes through hell every time he bowls a cricket ball,” Law told . “I can sympathise with him. I would love him to play every game for us but that’s impossible, no one does that these days.”It’s a tough one for the players because we’re not talking about $10,000 here and there. We’re talking about a million dollars and Malinga, when he bowls, he puts his body through hell, so … two more years of IPL cricket and he can put his feet up and not go through that pain again.”Apart from Malinga, there are three other prominent Sri Lanka players participating in the IPL – Tillakaratne Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara. The tour of England clashes with the latter stages of the IPL, and there’s been confusion in Dilshan’s case about when he’ll join the Sri Lanka squad. He had said he wanted to join as early as May 10, ahead of the first warm-up game, but the BCCI and the Sri Lanka board are negotiating his release date. Sangakkara and Jayawardene, meanwhile, will join their squad ahead of the second warm-up fixture.”The IPL situation – we’ve got to be smart with that,” Law said. ”India, they are big brother, we’ve got to look after them, we don’t want to upset them. It’s where a lot of the world cricket boards make a lot of their money, so we’ve got to keep India sweet.”The financial incentive of the IPL was a major temptation for players, Law said. ”You want the best for your players and the best Sri Lanka can supply to the players at this stage is nowhere near what other international players are getting.”I think [better pay] will arrive one day but right now it is difficult to attract the players to continue to play international cricket when they can go to the IPL for six weeks and earn five years’ money.”Sri Lanka have undergone a change in leadership since finishing runners-up in the 2011 World Cup, with Sangakkara and Jayawardene stepping down as captain and vice-captain respectively – decisions Law could “totally respect and understand” – and their selection committee resigning. Dilshan has been named the new captain and Law has taken over from Trevor Bayliss, who he worked with as assistant coach.”Sri Lanka will go through a rebuilding phase now,” Law said. “But the amount of talent that is yet to play international cricket at this stage is amazing.”

Leeds: Whites keen on Derby attacker

Leeds United are interested in a move for Derby County teenager Malcolm Ebiowei, according to The Sun.

The Lowdown: Ebiowei profiled

Ebiowei is 18 years of age and can play anywhere across the front three. He has represented both England and Holland at youth international level and made the move to Derby from Scottish giants Rangers last year.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates-2/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Ebiowei has made 15 first-team appearances for the Rams during the current campaign, contributing to three goals.

Derby will be playing in League One next season, and it looks as if the Whites are eyeing up a move for the versatile attacker, who coach Justin Walker said ‘has got that little bit of X-factor’.

The Latest: Leeds interest

The Sun shared a story on Sunday lunchtime regarding Ebiowei’s future. They claimed that it is unlikely the teenager will stay at Derby, with Leeds, Fulham and Tottenham all weighing up a summer move.

RB Leipzig and Crystal Palace are also name-checked with an interest, with Ebiowei’s contract set to expire next month.

The Verdict: Shrewd move?

Leeds have previous when it comes to picking up a talented attacker from a side struggling off the pitch financially when they signed Joe Gelhardt from Wigan, so it looks as if Ebiowei could follow suit with a move to Elland Road.

The Derby talent already has first-team experience in the second tier and is a man in demand, making a possible deal a smart one.

Should a transfer to Yorkshire go through, you’d expect the winger will go into the club’s Under-23 ranks to start with, aiming to break into Jesse Marsch’s first-team squad over time, regardless of what division they are in.

No início do treino desta quarta, Carille separou 12 jogadores.

Wolves’ Fabio Silva struggles vs Burnley

Wolverhampton Wanderers were dealt another major blow in their hunt for European qualification as Bruno Lage’s men lost 1-0 at Turf Moor to relegation-battling Burnley in the Premier League.

Matej Vydra’s second-half strike proved the difference between the two sides, with the visitors keeping 64% of the ball, but managing just four shots on target.

Having lost 1-0 to Newcastle last time out, it’s another sucker punch for the West Midlands outfit, who remain eighth. Although, they are three points behind seventh-placed West Ham with a game in hand.

No Wolves player particularly covered themselves in glory, however, it was another tough afternoon for young striker Fabio Silva.

The 19-year-old hasn’t been short of opportunities this term, particularly recently with Raul Jimenez’s suspension, making 20 Premier League appearances thus far.

However, the trip to Turf Moor was another game that added to the Portuguese’s run without a goal this season.

During his 67-minute spell in Lancashire, the striker managed to only make a measly 21 touches, with goalkeeper Jose Sa touching the ball over twice as much with 44 touches.

The 19-year-old’s only efforts on goal ended up being two blocked shots, with none hitting the target.

As well as little threat in the final third, the Portuguese once again struggled to link up with his teammates, producing just seven successful passes with an accuracy of 54%.

There was very little defensive contribution too, with the striker losing 71% of his duels as well as offering zero blocks, clearances, interceptions or tackles.

With Silva previously labelled as a “hindrance” by Wolves journalist Liam Keen, unlocking the youngster’s potential is still a puzzle that Lage is trying to solve, with the forward’s struggles not necessarily a surprise with Wolves the Premier League’s fifth-lowest goalscorers with just 33 goals in 33 matches.

However, what will be a concern for both the Wolves manager and the fanbase is the lack of efforts on goal that the striker produces just 0.8 shots per game, compared to the 1.8 of first choice forward Jimenez, who has six goals this season.

Having paid a whopping £35.6m for Silva’s services, Fosun will be desperate to see the colossal fee justified by seeing Lage unleash the best of his young fellow countryman.

Although, the 19-year-old’s predicament is also down to him to solve, having struggled last year too with just four goals, and can no longer afford to let Lage down.

Henriques adds to South Australia's woes

Moises Henriques destroyed South Australia’s top order after Usman Khawaja raised his first double-century for New South Wales to leave the Blues in control after two days. Afternoon rain saved the Redbacks from any further embarrassment but they will need more help from the weather to avoid defeat over the next two days.Henriques had James Smith and Michael Klinger both caught at slip and then followed with Daniel Harris lbw, before Trent Copeland continued the procession by bowling Cameron Borgas. It left South Australia at 4 for 56 at stumps, trailing by 473 on what the Blues proved was a fine batting surface.Khawaja began the day on 175 and he soon progressed to his double-century, in an effort that could have earned him a call-up for the first Ashes Test had it not been for Marcus North’s career-saving hundred in Bangalore. Khawaja was eventually out for 214, one of two wickets for Aaron O’Brien, who also removed Ben Rohrer (70).New South Wales batted on while Brad Haddin quickly regained his touch in his first Sheffield Shield match back from an elbow injury. Haddin finished unbeaten on 54 from 57 deliveries when Stuart Clark called an end to the innings with the Blues comprehensively on top at 6 for 529.

Liverpool could still sign Kylian Mbappe

Liverpool have been mentioned in the same breath as some phenomenal players of late.

Of course, the Reds are currently in danger of losing Mohamed Salah but the likes of Alexander Isak and Serge Gnabry have been tipped to potentially fill the offensive void.

What’s the word?

Well, the club have now been touted with possibly making a swoop for a certain Kylian Mbappe.

The Frenchman has been linked with Liverpool before but now there are fresh rumours suggesting a move could be on the cards.

That’s according to reports who suggest a club is ‘moving in the shadows’ to sign the elite PSG star.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

It’s then claimed that it isn’t Barcelona but it could be title rivals Manchester City or Liverpool who are plotting a bid.

Mbappe isn’t currently rated at a whopping £144m by Transfermarkt but can be signed for nothing in the summer with his contract in the French capital expiring in a few months’ time.

Even better than Salah?

Mbappe needs absolutely no introduction.

Described as a “phenomenon” by Noel le Graet, French Football Federation President and as “another Thierry Henry” by Arsene Wenger, he is a player capable of starring on the biggest of stages and in the most eclectic of cauldrons in world football.

Time and time again we see the France international demolishing teams and if Liverpool can pen Salah to fresh terms, as well as signing Mbappe it would be special.

That said, it is evident that the latter possesses even more potential than their frightening Egyptian forward.

Salah is a classic late bloomer but as we can see from the Liverpool target’s 28 goals and 20 assists this season, he can certainly be classified in the same generational bracket.

What’s staggering is that despite the 23-year-old’s young age, he has still found the net on 160 occasions for PSG.

A tally of 26 goals for his country is also fine evidence of the mesmerising talent Mbappe has in his locker and should he join Liverpool, he may just dislodge Salah and become an even bigger hero in Merseyside.

Wouldn’t that be something?

Younis' ban lifted, fines for others reduced

As was widely expected, the PCB has reduced or written off the punishments of four players who the board had only recently found guilty of various misdemeanours in the aftermath of an ill-fated, winless Australian tour over the turn of this year. The indefinite ban on former captain Younis Khan was lifted, the Rs 3 million fine on captain Shahid Afridi, for ball-tampering, was revoked entirely, while the fines on the Akmal brothers for acts of indiscipline were reduced.Ever since Shoaib Malik’s one-year ban was removed last week, the PCB had indicated that the punishments for other players would also be lifted. At a press conference to announce Pakistan’s Asia Cup squad two days ago, board chairman Ijaz Butt revealed that he had already recommended these measures to the independent arbitrator overlooking the appeals of the players. Butt staunchly defended the overturning, telling Cricinfo it wasn’t a u-turn, just the following of “a constitutional process.”The decisions were announced by retired judge Irfan Qadir after the latest set of hearings on Saturday morning. Afridi, he explained, had already been punished by the ICC, which had banned him for two Twenty20 internationals, so the question of a second punishment was not on. “The ICC has written a letter to the PCB indicating that the second punishment is wrong,” Qadir told reporters after the hearings in Lahore. “I must appreciate that Afridi accepted his wrongdoing. He accepted that he should not have done it but since he realised it himself I thought that was good and so removed the order on him.”Much the same reasoning was applied to the Akmal brothers, whose fines have been reduced to Rs1 million. The brothers accepted their mistakes. “They were candid in accepting their disciplinary issues. The PCB wanted to halve the fines [Kamran was fined Rs3 million] but I felt all players should now be treated on a par and so brought it down to Rs1 million.”Younis’ case was expected to go on longer as his lawyer Ahmed Qayyum had insisted he would seek no compromised relief and fight to clear his name fully. Qayyum’s persistence, Qadir indicated, won out. “There were many applications from the lawyer but there was no delay from my end. I asked Talib Rizvi [PCB’s legal advisor] what the main allegation was against him. He said it was an open-ended ban and he should not be part of a Pakistan squad. Now that he has been considered for a squad, it means the PCB has reconsidered him so I have simply set aside the order.”The orders leave undecided for now the fate of only two from the seven originally punished. Rana Naved-ul-Hasan is likely to get the same relief at his next hearing on June 19, while the door has also been left open for Mohammad Yousuf – who retired in protest at the punishment – to come back should he wish to.Butt insisted that this wasn’t a u-turn, only the outcome of following the procedures laid down in the board’s constitution. “We only followed the process as it exists in the PCB constitution. There is an allowance in the constitution for punished players to appeal and they did and this is the result,” he told Cricinfo. However, he admitted that other factors came into play. “There were many appeals from many quarters which asked us to reconsider the punishments. For example the national assembly committee on sports met and the chairman asked me, after detailed discussions with a number of people, to review the decisions. I said there is an appeals process already in place and it is on and we are looking at it as we should and that we will review them. The independent arbitrator was appointed and he took into account many things before coming to this. A process has been followed.”Butt argued that the decisions would not send the wrong kind of message – that acts of indiscipline would go unchecked by the board – to the players. “Not at all. A loud and clear message has been conveyed to the players. On the Asia Cup and England tours I have left the entire responsibility of discipline in the hands of the captain and manager. If there is a single act of indiscipline, they have my backing to send the player back without even consulting me or anyone in the board. Already in the West Indies [for the World T20], the players were better and performed better.”
