South ZoneAn aggressive 95 from M Vijay and good support from opener Srikkanth Anirudha and Arun Karthik handed Tamil Nadu a comfortable eight-wicket win – their fourth consecutive victory in the tournament – over Andhra Pradesh in Visakhapatnam. Tamil Nadu’s job was made easier by their fast bowlers R Suthesh and Yo Mahesh, who took five wickets between them to help restrict Andhra for 190. The duo struck to leave Andhra reeling at 37 for 6. However, Duvvarapu Shivkumar, who top scored for Andhra with 56, triggered a lower-order revival, with the last four wickets added 153. Garikina Prasad, the offspinner, who batted at No. 10, contributed 41. But the total proved inadequate, with Tamil Nadu’s batsmen scoring at more than 5.5 runs an over, led by Vijay, who struck 12 fours and two sixes.Fast bowlers M Arjun and Shoaib Ahmed took three wickets each to help Hyderabad inflict a 105-run defeat on Goa in Visakhapatnam. The two took the first five wickets to fall and left Goa – who were chasing 261 for victory – reeling at 48 for 5 in the 15th over. Though the lower order helped Goa salvage a more respectable final score, the flurry of wickets early in their innings meant they were always behind the eight-ball. Asked to bat, Hyderabad were provided a good start by opener DB Ravi Teja, who scored 69. Though the highest partnership in their innings was only 50 – between Teja and Anoop Pai for the third wicket – the middle order made important contributions to help their team post a competitive score. Amol Shinde made 43, wicketkeeper Abhinav Kumar chipped in with 34, and Ashish Reddy scored a quick 29 to take their team to 260 for 8. Shadab Jakati, the left-arm spinner, took 3 for 52. Goa, at the bottom of the table, have no chance of making it to the knockout stage.A threatening 89-run stand for the seventh wicket between centurion Devraj Patil and Raju Bhatkal could not prevent Kerala from beating Karnataka by a narrow 15-run margin at the Port Trust Golden Jubilee Stadium. Medium-pacer Prasanth Parameswaran took 3 for 15 in 7.3 overs, and was ably assisted by the rest of the bowling line-up as Karnataka faltered in pursuit of 243. They started off poorly, losing their openers Robin Uthappa and CM Gautam with 19 on the board and slipped to a precarious 111 for 6, despite a 54-run partnership between Patil and B Akhil. Though Patil and Bhatkal took their team within reach of the target, Parameswaran’s two wickets ensured Kerala won. Earlier, Kerala squandered a solid foundation for a sizeable score, losing five wickets for 68 runs in reaching 258 for 9. Half-centuries from Karimutthatu Rakesh, Sreekumar Nair and Preambhastn Prem had put Kerala in a dominating position, but three run-outs jolted their hopes of getting a total beyond Karnataka’s reach. It was Kerala’s first win in the tournament.West ZoneMumbai kept alive their chances of finishing in the top two by beating Maharashtra by seven wickets at the Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Ground in Rajkot. Maharashtra, put in, managed a score over 200 thanks to an unbeaten 58 from No. 7 Ganesh Gaekwad, who added 71 for the eighth wicket with Rohit Motwani after they had been reduced to 110 for 7. Dhawal Kulkarni struck two early blows for Mumbai, while Iqbal Abdulla and Abhishek took three wickets apiece. Chasing 211, Mumbai’s openers – Wasim Jaffer and Ajinkya Rahane – put on 145 in 22 overs. Gaekwad took the three wickets to fall in the innings, while Rahane reached his century before Mumbai completed the win with 12.4 overs to spare. Mumbai, who now are tied at the top with Maharashtra and Gujarat on eight points, will have to rely on the results of the remaining games in the group phase – Mumbai have completed their four.Half-centuries from opener Sagar Jogiyani and Cheteshwar Pujara helped hosts Saurashtra beat Baroda by five wickets. Set a challenging target of 248, Saurashtra began soundly with the openers adding 36 in under ten overs. However, Chirag Pathak’s dismissal slowed down the innings and Saurashtra were behind the asking-rate when they lost No. 3 Bhushan Chauhan with the score on 83 in the 26th over. But Jogiyani batted steadily, and Pujara stepped up the scoring after Jogiyani fell to finish with 75 off 68 balls and take Saurashtra past Baroda’s total in the final over. Pratik Mehta supported Pujara well with a 28-ball 33, adding 60 for the fifth wicket. Baroda, after opting to bat, wasted a solid foundation laid by a 106-run third-wicket stand between Azharuddin Bilakhia, who top scored with 85, and Rakesh Solanki. They lost their last six wickets for 78 runs, with medium-pacer Jayesh Odedra taking 4 for 44 to precipitate a quick end to the innings.North ZoneAjay Mannu, the Himachal Pradesh wicketkeeper, made an invaluable 70 to help his team record a narrow two-wicket win over Delhi in Una. HP were struggling at 194 for 6 in pursuit of a challenging 282, but Mannu steadied the innings, getting involved in crucial partnerships of 31 for the seventh wicket with K Diwan, and 41 for the eighth with offspinner Sarandeep Singh to take his team within reach of the target. HP had begun their run-chase well, with opener Sangram Singh scoring a quickfire 57. However, the middle-order batsmen failed to build on starts – Vikramjeet Malik made 31 and captain Paras Dogra was trapped lbw on 44. Mannu’s rescue act, though, led the team to their third straight win. Delhi’s innings was anchored by opener Aakash Chopra’s century. He and was involved in a 96-run fourth-wicket stand with allrounder Rajat Bhatia, who made 77 off 68 balls.Haryana too completed a close two-wicket win against Services. Batting first, Services – who had complained about poor facilities in Una – managed only 181. Joginder Sharma struck three early blows, while India legspinner Amit Mishra grabbed 5 for 44 as only three Services batsmen made it past 20. Services’ opening bowlers Rakesh Kumar and Narendra Singh took five wickets to leave Haryana at 78 for 6, but Dhruv Singh and Joginder revived the chase with a 79 -run stand. Arun Sharma then removed Joginer and Sandeep Singh – he finished with 2 for 29 off ten overs – but Dhruv’s unbeaten 68 ensured his team reached the target with 4.2 overs to spare. At the other end, Gaurav Vashisht survived 11 balls for his 1.Uday Kaul top scored with 79 as Punjab posted the first win – a six-wicket victory over Jammu & Kashmir in Dharamsala. Set 219, Punjab’s chase was over in the 38th over, with Ravi Inder Singh and Ankur Kakkar chipping in with 40s. It was the third straight loss for J&K, who were off to a steady start after being put in. Openers Imraj Thakur and Ian Dev Singh scored contrasting 45s, but the middle order, barring Manoj Joglekar, failed to capitalise. Joglekar scored 73 to push his team past 200; the best from the rest was 12. Taruwar Kohli was the pick of the Punjab bowlers, with 3 for 28 off his 7.1 overs.East ZoneRanadeb Bose took a three-wicket haul as Bengal’s bowlers put on an impressive display at Eden Gardens to help their side book their place in the knockout stage. Chasing 250, Tripura were bowled out for 158. Ashok Dinda and spinners Iresh Saxena and Manoj Tiwary scalped two wickets each. Shreevats Goswami scored 74 in Bengal’s 249, with Tiwary making 55 and wicketkeeper-opener Wriddhiman Saha 41. For Tripura, opening bowler Rana Dutta, playing his third List A game, took 4 for 43.A seven-wicket win over Jharkhand in Kolkata boosted Orissa’s chances of qualification. Subit Biswal’s maiden List A century and an unbeaten 88 from Halhadar Das steered Orissa to their target of 261 with 5.3 overs remaining. Jharkhand reached 260 thanks to Saurabh Tiwary’s 76, and a 47-ball 62 from Shiv Gautham.

Pundit says Tottenham don’t need another striker - Exclusive

Graham Roberts doesn’t believe that Tottenham need to bring in another striker now Harry Kane has committed his future to the club.

After months of uncertainty and an ongoing saga with Manchester City, the 28-year-old confirmed that he’ll be staying at Spurs for least this summer after Pep Guardiola’s men failed to meet Daniel Levy’s asking-price.

But following Carlos Vinicius’ return to Benfica, Tottenham are back to square one, with Kane their only senior striker, although Dane Scarlett should play his part in the UEFA Conference League.

Spurs had been heavily linked with Danny Ings and then Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic but are on the verge of heading into another campaign with the England captain as their only option at the top end of the pitch.

Heung Min Son has already shown his ability to play through the middle this season, Lucas Moura can play up front and Dele Alli has previously played a false nine role, which all options for Nuno Espirito Santo should Kane get injured.

When asked whether he’s confident heading into the season with just one striker, Roberts exclusively told Football FanCast:

“Yeah, I am, that doesn’t bother me. If you’re going to wait for someone like Vlahovic, why do you want to rush into it? If he wants to stay there for another year, then let him stay there.”

Harry Kane ‘wishing he’s at Man City’

Former Premier League midfielder Paul Scholes has made a pretty brutal claim about Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane.

The Lowdown: Transfer saga

After over 330 appearances for Tottenham, Kane’s time at Spurs looked like it was going to come to an end over the summer as he was linked and targeted by Premier League champions Manchester City.

A bid was rejected and Kane was late to training before he returned to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side in the 1-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers before announcing he was staying at the club in a statement on Twitter.

Since then, Kane is yet to score in the league, with his two goals coming in the Europa Conference League competition against Pacos de Ferreira.

The Latest: Scholes makes claim

Speaking to Premier League Productions [via HITC], Scholes has claimed the striker was wishing he was at Manchester City when he saw the team on Saturday.

With Spurs missing Heung-Min Son and Davinson Sanchez, it was a weaker XI and the former Manchester United midfielder has made a strong claim on Kane’s thinking.

“It’s not a strong team,” he said. “I think Harry Kane will be in that dressing room thinking ‘I wish I was at Manchester City’ with that team they have got.”

The Verdict: Is Kane regretting decision?

Kane staying put at the club came from many things – his emotional connection with the Lilywhites support, Spurs rejecting City’s bids and the right money being offered. But after they fell to a shocking defeat at Palace on Saturday, where they conceded three goals in 15 minutes, Kane could be thinking exactly what Scholes has claimed.

Since City lost to Spurs on the opening day, Pep Guardiola’s side has won three straight games, scoring 11 goals in the process without a recognised striker.

It’s likely the situation between the two clubs will arise in January or next summer, but for now, Kane has no choice but to try and help Tottenham return to the top four.

In other news, an offer has been tabled to sign Serie A ace. Find out more here.

Gambhir to appeal one-Test ban

Gautam Gambhir, the India opener, was banned for one Test on Friday for not conducting play “within the spirit of the game as well as within the laws of cricket”

Gautam Gambhir, the India opener, will appeal the one-Test ban imposed on him during the Delhi Test on Friday for not conducting play “within the spirit of the game as well as within the laws of cricket”. Gambhir was involved in a verbal altercation with Shane Watson, the Australian bowler, and elbowed him in the process.By Sunday, the ICC will name a Code of Conduct commissioner, who will hear the appeal within seven days of his appointment.Gambhir, who pleaded guilty to the Level 2 offence, could miss the final game of the series against Australia in Nagpur from Thursday after match referee Chris Broad told him of the decision before the third day’s play.Broad delayed the verdict from Thursday’s hearing while he considered the evidence for the charge. The in-form Gambhir, who scored 206 in India’s 613 for 7 declared to follow his century in the second Test, had a series of verbal clashes with Watson during the middle session on day one. They had an argument in the 51st over of the first innings when Gambhir took his first run and the batsman caught Watson with his left elbow as he ran the second.”The decision to find Gambhir guilty of a Level 2 offence is indicative of the fact that any degree of physical contact is unacceptable,” Broad said. “Had Gambhir been charged with and found guilty of a charge under 2.4 [for deliberate or inappropriate physical contact], due to his previous offence, I would have been obliged to impose a minimum penalty of a two-test match ban. In the view of the umpires, the facts of this case – the lightness of the physical conduct and the element of provocation – would not justify such a penalty.”Broad took in to account Gambhir’s previous fine for running into Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi and said he hoped the batsman would learn from the incident. “It wasn’t deliberate, it just happened,” Gambhir said on Wednesday. “I didn’t need to get into this argument with Shane Watson because he had no option of getting me out. There wasn’t a need for me to stick my elbow out, it just happened.”Virender Sehwag, Gambhir’s opening partner, said that the ban was harsh. “I have heard the news just now, so it is difficult to react,” he said. “But Gambhir had pleaded guilty and it was natural that he would be punished. But I feel a match ban is too harsh, he could have done with a match-fee fine. It would have been good for us.”Watson was found to have been “verbally engaging with Gambhir in a manner that was not in keeping the spirit of cricket” and was fined 10% of his match fee. He pleaded not guilty to the Level 1 charge and has no right to appeal.Gambhir was fined 65% of his match fee for his run-in with Afridi in 2007 while batting in an ODI in Kanpur. In that case, he was found guilty of a Level 2 charge of inappropriate and deliberate physical contact between players as well as a Level 1 charge of not conducting himself within the spirit of the game. The current disciplinary measures follow Zaheer Khan being docked 80% of his match fee last week for his celebration when Matthew Hayden was dismissed in the second innings of India’s 320-run win in the second test at Mohali. The tense series, which India currently leads 1-0, follows a fractious contest in Australia’s 2-1 series win at home in 2007-08.

Roberts could see Lautaro and Kane play together for Spurs

Harry Kane and Lautaro Martinez could play together according to former Tottenham player Graham Roberts.

Lautaro Martinez has been linked with Tottenham in recent days with journalist Fabrizio Romano reporting that Tottenham opened talks with Inter Milan and offered €70m for the striker, but the Italian giants have said they have no intention of selling the striker this summer.

That is because they have already sold Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea in a move that was confirmed on Thursday, with Edin Dzeko looking set to replace him according to reports in Italy.

Despite Inter appearing to not want to sell Lautaro this summer, if there is U-turn at some point and he does end up at Spurs, Roberts believes that he could play up front with Kane, telling Football FanCast: “I think Kane drops a little bit and he can play them through to him. If you’ve got a top, top player you can play with anybody.

“Nuno’s got pace in the team – Son, Moura, Bergwijn’s got pace, so we’ve got pace in the team so now it’s really just sort of getting another striker, getting another centre-half and right-back and I think we are made for the season then.”

Nuno Espirito Santo has been active in the transfer market already this summer signing Bryan Gil, Pierluigi Gollini and Cristian Romero. With over two weeks left in the transfer window, will there be any further incomings at Tottenham?

Taylor forces underdogs into contention

Scorecard and ball-by-ball commentary

A majestic 154 by Ross Taylor drove New Zealand into a dominant position on the second day against England at Old Trafford. With the visitors squeezing out four late wickets, it is the hosts who are limping, weighed down by that favourites-tag millstone around their necks. After Taylor’s superb hundred provided the backbone to a solid first innings of 381, Iain O’Brien – who replaced Tim Southee for this Test – broke through with an 82mph legbreak to Alastair Cook. Replays suggested the batsman had every right to grumble, but luck and the match momentum were with New Zealand for most of the day. Andrew Strauss and Michael Vaughan then put on a calming 78 in 34.2 long overs before Strauss, who had passed 50 from 125 balls, edged O’Brien to Brendon McCullum, who grasped the most athletic, initiative-seizing of catches low to his left – reminiscent of Alec Stewart’s brilliant snaffle to dismiss Brian Lara at Lord’s in 1995. Daniel Vettori, who turned it square, then had Michael Vaughan trapped in front before Ryan Sidebottom, the nightwatchman, fell three overs before the close.New Zealand owe their dominant position to Taylor, however. No one ever doubted his class and prodigious talents, but pedigrees are habitually unpredictable – as those two reckless innings at Lord’s (19 and 20) proved. The contrast between the rusty Taylor of last week and today’s supercharged (or IPL-charged?) model could not have been more defined. No other New Zealander looked as settled at the crease, and few have the audacity to move to 150 with an expansive six over midwicket. His method is a curious mix of the poise of Martin Crowe (whose record at Old Trafford he beat) and Nathan Astle’s frenzied brutality – but crucially, his hundred today provides much-needed evidence that, under his lid, there lurks a brain. It’s quite a package. Some of England’s tactics were confusing at best, and their fielding lurched from average to embarrassing. Monty Panesar – who turned it square yesterday – was delayed from entering the attack, as was James Anderson who Jacob Oram struggled against yesterday afternoon. In fact Anderson didn’t bowl until 30 minutes before lunch, and it wasn’t due to outstanding bowling from Sidebottom or Stuart Broad. With a strong wind blowing across the ground, Taylor was immediately into his stride with a short-arm bunt through extra cover followed by an audacious cover drive right out of the textbook.

Oram continued to struggle, however, never resembling a batsman fresh from a Lord’s hundred last week. Broad persisted in peppering him with bouncers from around the wicket and Oram responded by swaying, ducking and weaving out of the way, but never was he comfortable. Once Panesar was belatedly introduced, Oram took him on with a skip down the pitch but Panesar beat him in the flight, the ball circling above Anderson at mid-on. He flunked a relatively easy chance, labouring after the ball and failing to even get a hand on it.Oram gifted his wicket four runs later when, on 38, he too laboured as Taylor called him through for a single to point. Cook – whose fielding has improved beyond sight since the Bambi-like figure who debuted two years ago – swooped, threw down the stumps and Oram was a foot short. Worse was to come, however. Two balls later, Vettori ambled through for a single – as though on a Sunday jog – but failed to ground his bat, and Panesar’s throw was sufficiently straight for Tim Ambrose to whip off the bails in time. Vettori’s foot was airborne, and so were England’s ecstatic fielders. New Zealand had slipped to 250 for 6 in the blink of an eye.Taylor needed a partner, and Kyle Mills responded. A streaky edge off Sidebottom was followed by a heave off Panesar. Another carved four off Sidebottom took him past his previous Test-best of 31 before he matched Taylor’s own elegance with two classical off-drives. Taylor’s hundred – his second in Tests – came from 130 balls, while his and Mills’ fifty partnership came up from just 72. The momentum was entirely with New Zealand.Taylor expanded and flourished after lunch, moving from 100 to 150 in 42 breathless balls, smacking four fours and four sixes, the last of which sailed into the top tier of the stand at midwicket. Vaughan was left flummoxed, as depicted by an awful shy at the stumps which missed by several feet, handing five overthrows. Broad matched that effort with a similarly hapless attempt in the next over off Sidebottom, and the same fielder – now stationed at deep midwicket – failed to cling onto a Taylor mow, parrying it over the rope. Sidebottom’s apoplectic rage could be heard ringing around Manchester as New Zealand ran England ragged. The contrast in run-rates between New Zealand, who skipped merrily along at nearly four-per-over, and England (a yawningly dull 2.57) neatly demonstrates whose confidence levels are spiralling, and whose have plummeted. Kevin Pietersen remains not out, and the pitch is a belter, but England have their work cut out.

Should Everton sign Dwight McNeil?

When Dominic Calvert-Lewin signed for Everton as a teenager, few would have expected him to become the player he is today.

Following the 2020/21 campaign, he joined an exclusive club at Goodison Park, one which contains just him, Romelu Lukaku and Yakubu in the Premier League era.

What is that club, I hear you ask? It’s one which involves scoring 20 goals in a single season for the Toffees.

Calvert-Lewin is one of the most difficult forwards to handle in the league, combining raw pace with an ability to beat any defender in the air. He found the net 21 times last season and formed part of England’s squad which reached the final of the recent European Championship.

Although he only earned two substitute appearances at the tournament, his tally of four goals in 11 matches for his country provide evidence of a player who is improving all the time.

But how do you make him better, especially in a summer where Rafa Benitez could witness Richarlison and James Rodriguez departing Goodison Park?

Everton’s main man is still only 24 years of age and thus has plenty of potential to improve going forward. Add a player like Leon Bailey or Dwight McNeil into the equation and his chances of scoring surely improve.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-everton-news-benitez-kamara-romero-dumfries” title= “Read the latest Everton transfer news!”]

Rodriguez was a creative force for Everton last term, amassing the most key passes per game of any player in the squad. However, Richarlison struggled for assists, failing to supply a single goal for a teammate in 2021.

McNeil, on the other hand, could drastically improve on that and help Calvert-Lewin get better. The Burnley winger has been linked with a £25m move to Everton but they are facing competition from Aston Villa for his signature.

He scored two goals last season but provided five assists and supplied 1.3 key passes per match, a tally only bettered by Rodriguez and Lucas Digne for Everton players in 2020/21.

Dubbed “special” by Clarets teammate Ashley Westwood, McNeil possesses one of the most dangerous deliveries of the ball in the Premier League.

He is ranked in the 94th percentile for English top-flight players last term in terms of crosses into the penalty area. Furthermore, the young flanker is in the 97th percentile for passes from free-kicks and the 91st percentile for general crosses.

Factor in Calvert-Lewin’s height and this could be quite the combination for Everton next season. The Toffess striker didn’t exactly have the best service last term, so with a crosser as prolific as McNeil in the side, he could find the net even more regularly.

That should be a scary thought for Premier League defences.

AND in other news, Bye-bye Rodriguez: Benitez must seal Everton swoop for “exceptional” 33-goal wizard…
