Wolves boss Nuno Santo is failing his side with his indecisiveness

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Wolves return to Premier League action this weekend, having taken a short break for the Carabao Cup in midweek, and they now come face to face with a team in turmoil right now in Arsenal.

Nuno Santo’s side currently sit 12th in the table having lost just two of their ten matches, but it could have been so much better, especially in recent weeks.

Last Sunday’s match against Newcastle United epitomised that entirely as the west Midlands club went behind in the first half to a Jamaal Lascelles header before needing Jonny’s equaliser as the left-back was in the right place at the right time to secure a point at St James’ Park.

Although Matty Longstaff’s red card left the Magpies in the lurch, Wolves still couldn’t capitalise.

Just like the Slovan Bratislava game, and just like the Southampton game too, Nuno set out his side originally in a 3-5-2 formation, only this time, he absurdly chose Matt Doherty at centre-back despite having Jesus Vallejo and Max Kilman at his disposal.

Both of their last two fixtures saw him quickly revert back to a 3-4-3 formation, and you guessed it the same happened last weekend.

It begs the question – why he doesn’t just set out his side like that initially?

The 3-5-2 has left them exposed and a goal down in three successive matches, leading to the Portuguese native changing it up by the second half.

Surely he wouldn’t have that problem if he ran the formation they’ve ended with from the beginning.

A sign of his stubbornness, perhaps.

All three games they have had to come from behind to salvage a result with Wolves only picking up a victory against Slovan.

Football FanCast have previously stated why a 3-4-3 can pay dividends for the side this season, so maybe it is time Nuno listened.

Now they have Diogo Jota back from injury and Matt Doherty closer to being 100%, this formation just seems most natural as it will allow a front three of the Portuguese winger, Raul Jimenez, and Adama Traore – the trio have scored six of their 13 Premier League goals this campaign.

Liverpool’s Rhian Brewster shows great attitude in Instagram post after his debut

Of course, he wanted to mention the fact that he’d played his first game for the Anfield outfit, but he made it clear that the most important thing was the fact that his side were victorious against MK Dons.

He didn’t say that he was gutted not to score despite missing a couple of half-chances – he was solely focused on the team’s result.

That type of attitude will certainly bode well for him in the future. Football is a team game and Brewster isn’t blind to that fact despite being touted as one of the most talented youngsters in the country.

Aston Villa fans react as Jack Grealish and Tyrone Mings are eyed ahead of international selection

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa face Everton tonight to begin the third gameweek of the 2019/20 Premier League campaign and it won’t just be fans of either club in attendance at Villa Park.

The Daily Mail have revealed that the England management team of Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland will also be there to have a watchful eye on the performances from Jack Grealish and Tyrone Mings.

England’s squad announcement for their Euro 2020 qualification fixtures against Bulgaria and Kosovo comes next week and it’s clear to see the boss wants to get one final look-in before it is revealed.

It could be a reward for their fine performances over the last 12 months as Villa won promotion back to the top-flight via the playoffs.

Grealish won seven man of the match awards, scored six goals and provided seven assists last season (as per WhoScored) whilst Mings’ introduction to the team during the second half of the season helped spark a historic ten-game winning run.

Some Villa fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts.

One believed that both Mings and Grealish were ready for an England call-up with another suggesting Tom Heaton is also deserving of a spot.

A further member of the Villans faithful claimed Mings alongside Harry Maguire at the back would be a solid pairing whilst one said Grealish ‘100%’ should be called up for England.

West Ham should sell Javier Hernandez and meet Manuel Lanzini’s wage demands

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Football Insider, Manuel Lanzini is demanding a weekly salary of £120k-a-week if he is to sign a new contract at the club.

What’s the word then?

Well, the Argentina international is currently in negotiations with the Hammers over a new contract at the London Stadium, with the east Londoners reportedly preparing an offer of a five-year deal worth £90k-a-week.

Lanzini, however, wants £30k-a-week more than that and the two parties are reportedly said to be ‘well apart’ in terms of reaching an agreement, despite a willingness from both club and player to come to one.

Lanzini has one year left on his current deal – which also has the option of a two-year extension – but the Hammers want to tie him down to a long-term contract.

Should sell Javier Hernandez to free up wages

Football Insider has also reported that some MLS sides are eyeing up a January move for Javier Hernandez, who could be available for a bargain £4m having already entered the final year of his contract.

The Mexico international – who is his country’s all-time top scorer – is reportedly not going to get an offer of a new contract anywhere near to the £140k-a-week he currently earns, so his exit seems like a real possibility in the winter window.

Watch the video below to find out how CR7 achieves some his best skills…

If that move does go ahead, then it will be a fairly large chunk of cash off the Irons’ wage bill, which should then be reinvested into meeting the 26-year-old’s demands.

Lanzini is arguably the Hammers’ most creative player  – he has two key passes per game already this term – and was in fine form before his pre-World Cup cruciate ligament injury.

Contrastingly, with Hernandez now 31 years of age and seemingly playing second fiddle to new arrival Sebastien Haller – the Frenchman started over the former Manchester United man on the opening day – the Hammers should cash in on the Mexican and move to ensure a key player is tied down for what will be his prime years.

Everton attacker Richarlison skating on thin ice after Watford display

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

It is now just one goal in his previous eight Premier League appearances for Everton attacker Richarlison, and he is surely skating on very thin ice when it comes to keeping his spot in the starting XI following his display against Watford on Saturday.

The Toffees may have come away from the clash at Goodison Park with three points, their first win of the season and a second successive clean sheet, but their £35m buy from the Hornets in 2018 struggled on Merseyside.

The Brazil international ended his debut campaign with the Blues with 13 goals in 35 top flight outings according to Transfermarkt, although nine of those came prior to 2019 as his form dropped off in the second half of the season.

The good thing for Richarlison last term was that he generally had little genuine competition for his place, and the winger was even able to fill in as a striker such was the lack of quality Marco Silva had available to him in that position.

Of course, the Portuguese manager knows the 22-year-old well having worked with him at Vicarage Road previously, but even he must have been concerned by his latest outing at the weekend.

While fellow wide man Bernard was the star of the show as he scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 win, Richarlison was subdued on the opposite flank and was replaced by Theo Walcott in the 62nd minute.

The early signs this term are that the South American attacker isn’t that effective on the right, but if Bernard is shining on the left then Silva has no reason to change things up.

The big-money buy’s zero shots on target from three shots, as per WhoScored, followed on from exactly the same record against Crystal Palace on the opening day, which is hardly what you want from one of your front three.

He also failed to make a key pass with an accuracy of just 35.7% in total, while he lost the ball on four occasions.

In 2018/19 Richarlison could have been given an opportunity as a centre-forward, but with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Moise Kean – who impressed supporters on Twitter following his cameo on Saturday – that looks unlikely as well.

With Alex Iwobi arriving to provide further depth in attack, Silva may well have a tough decision to make when Everton travel to Aston Villa on Friday.

Spurs right-back Walker-Peters deserves a chance

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Kyle Walker-Peters faces a defining season at Tottenham Hotspur.

The right-back has appeared on the verge of a first-team breakthrough for at least two seasons now and 2019/20 could be the time for him to finally come to the fore.

The 22-year-old has, thus far, made a total of 19 appearances for Spurs. Ten of those came in 2018/19, including one at the Camp Nou, as Mauricio Pochettino’s men looked to get a result against Barcelona to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages.

Walker-Peters made the mistake that led to Ousmane Dembele’s opener and was substituted; Spurs went on to take a point with Lucas Moura scoring the important goal.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Yet the talent is evident. In one Premier League game against AFC Bournemouth, Walker-Peters laid on three assists. Fellow right-back Kieran Trippier laid on three all season; his deputy, Serge Aurier, registered just two.

Walker-Peters also manages a higher pass completion rate than the pair; 83% to Aurier’s 75.5% and Trippier’s 78.9%.

Now, it remains to be seen if both players will be at Spurs next season. Both the England international and the Ivory Coast star are said to be expendable this summer, per Duncan Castles of the Transfer Window Podcast.

It speaks to how poor a season they both had that the club are willing to let both leave, as the right-back position became a major weak point for the Lilywhites at times last term.

And one has to assume that, if they depart, a new right-back will arrive.

But what can be the harm in giving Walker-Peters the chance to grab the mantle?

He is a quick, technically sound defender who has repeatedly shown that he can create chances for his team-mates and beat his man in the final third.

He is a young player, yes, but Pochettino has always shown a willingness to place his faith in youth; the likes of Juan Foyth, Harry Winks and Dele Alli have all benefitted immensely from his tactics.

Now is the time to throw Walker-Peters into the deep end.

If he swims, Spurs win and so does the player, as he nails down the spot as the club’s first-choice right-back.

If he sinks, the club will either have their current options or a new replacement, and Walker-Peters can go back to where he is now – the bench.

Wanyama set for talks over his Tottenham future

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Victor Wanyama is set for talks over his Tottenham Hotspur future as they close in on the signing of Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon, per Football Insider.

What’s the word?

The report claims that Spurs are in advanced talks with the France international as they look to reinforce a squad that reached the Champions League final and finished fourth in the Premier League.

However, such a deal could throw the Kenya international’s future into doubt, with Ndombele likely to occupy a central midfield position under Mauricio Pochettino.

And Football Insider claim that Wanyama will seek talks with his manager over his plans for the future.

Indeed, the likes of Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko and Eric Dier all appear to be ahead of Wanyama in the pecking order, even before the looming acquisition of Ndombele.

A shame

Wanyama is clearly a lieutenant of Pochettino, as he has been signed twice by the Argentine.

Indeed, he brought the midfielder to Southampton before again signing him at Spurs but it simply hasn’t worked out for him.

But, after a sensational debut season in north London, he has struggled with injury and has seen his playing time significantly reduced.

He made a total of four starts in the Premier League and he simply can’t be trusted to play for any length of time.

Pochettino warned of a “painful” rebuild this summer and shipping out the defensive midfielder may be a key part of that after all his injury woes.

West Ham fans on Twitter react to summer transfer budget rumour

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United fans on Twitter have been reacting to an ExWHUemployee rumour posted by a fan account concerning the club’s summer transfer budget.

The popular Hammers insider source revealed on the West Ham Way Podcast on Wednesday evening that Manuel Pellegrini will have approximately £65m to spend in the current window.

That’s including money made from the sales of players with striker Lucas Perez and midfielder Edimilson Fernandes already heading through the London Stadium exit door for undisclosed fees this summer.

The budget is a far cry from the nearly £100m that the Chilean gaffer was afforded in his maiden window in east London, through which he was able to bring in the likes of Felipe Anderson and Issa Diop.

This has left some members of the Claret & Blue Army feeling somewhat short-changed and they were not happy as remarks such as “Relegation scrap” and “Glad I didn’t renew”, in relation to season tickets, flew around the Twittersphere.
