SPCL 3 – Gosport keep winning but not likely to be enough

Gosport Borough have won all five games they’ve played since late June, but it’s not been quite enough to propel them into the Southern Electric Premier League, Division 3 promotion frame

Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo)01-Sep-2002Gosport Borough have won all five games they’ve played since late June, but it’s not been quite enough to propel them into the Southern Electric Premier League, Division 3 promotion frame.Purbrook and St Cross Symondians went into today’s final round of matches as firm favourites to claim the top two places.Andy Mengham’s side needed ten points from Ventnor’s visit to The Heath to go up as champions, while five bonus points from Havant II would have been enough to secure the probable runners-up spot for St Cross, who just missed out last term. But, after a modest four wins out of eight return from the opening two months of the season, Gosport will probably be well pleased with a probable third spot.Queenslander Nathan Collins, who becomes a naturalised Englishman for the purposes of SPL regulations next season, has once again led the way for the Borough. He’s bagged 38 wickets so far and, unless Alton’s Julian Ballinger picks up eight or more victims at Redlynch & Hale today, is virtually assured the Premier 3 bowling award for the second consecutive season. But Gosport have also done pretty well with the bat – Mike Rees, Stuart Magee and Pete Robson all homing in on a 400-run aggregate before today’s finale with Flamingo.Gosport’s fifth successive win came after a run chase at Ridge Meadow, where they cruised past Hambledon’s 248 (Leigh Burns 65) for the loss of five wickets – Collins showing his batting prowess with a neat 74.Hambledon’s season has been in complete contrast to that of Gosport, who inflicted their fifth successive defeat – a sequence of results which is set to leave them in third from bottom position.Winning or losing five games on the trot seems to be a regular occurrence in Premier 3 these days.Take Alton, for example.Top of the pile with seven wins out of eight at the start of July, their fortunes dipped dramatically with five straight defeats – a run they finally arrested with last weekend’s 62-run win over Portsmouth II.Alton must have thought promotion was theirs for the taking when they bowled over Purbrook and St Cross Symondians in late June. But, just like last season, it all went horribly wrong for Julian Ballinger’s side. They completely lost their way – being skittled for a meagre 50 by Gosport two weeks ago – and went to Redlynch today still searching to finish in a top six slot.Alton’s long overdue eighth win came at the expense of Portsmouth II – Michael Heffernan hitting a maiden century he must have feared was always to elude him.Four times previously the eldest of Paddy’s two cricketing sons had perished in the nervous 90’s, but as Alton ran up 245 against Portsmouth, so Michael notched his maiden 100.And what an appropriate time to do it – with all four members of the Heffernan clan in the Alton side !Rumour has it that Paddy’s wallet took a pounding last Saturday night …..But Heffernan’s celebrations will pale into insignificance alongside those at Purbrook Heath tonight, should Andy Mengham’s side lift the championship.Purbrook took a massive step nearer the title with a thrilling one-run win at Hursley Park – an absorbing match in which South African Willem Prozensky underlined what a talent he has. While partners came and went with regularity, Prozesky struck a quite superb 125 to take his season’s run aggregate to 924, over two-thirds of which (652) have come in boundaries.Purbrook’s 268-8 was trimmed, leaving Hursley Park a target score of 215 – which they almost got on the back of the day’s second splendid century by Paul Edwards, who was run out as the Park finished on 214-9.It was a terrific game that neither side deserved to lose. The win all but wrapped things up for Purbrook, who expect to be accompanied by St Cross into Premier 2 next season.Symondians almost tied things up themselves with an eight-wicket win over Hook & Newnham Basics (171) – Kiwi Mark Parker hitting an unbeaten 75 to ease the visitors home.Havant II pair Simon Greenfield, with an unbeaten 110, and Jon Owen (88) led a 275-2 run spree against severely weakened Flamingo, while a five-wicket spell by Fred Smith (5-21) and punchy 75 from Neil Westhorpe carried Ventnor to an 83-run win over Leckford.New Milton christened their new Fernhill HQ with a low-scoring three-wicket win over Waterlooville, but Redlynch & Hale sank to a hefty 176-run defeat at Hartley Wintney, where the village bowlers took a 280-run pounding.Paultons scored a timely late win, John Robinson hitting 66 in a 226-run total against Bashley-Rydal II, who faded after Steve Latimore’s bright beginnings and dipped to 200-9 at stumps.

Lee Ryder clarifies Dwight Gayle situation

Dwight Gayle agreed to sign a new deal at Newcastle United ‘a few weeks ago’, Lee Ryder has clarified in a fan Q&A for Chronicle Live.

The lowdown

The £4.5m-rated striker made 20 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring just one goal.

The Athletic reported at the end of March that Gayle had extended his stay at St James’ Park by signing a new three-year contract on reduced terms, but rumours around his future have continued to swirl.

Ryder’s Chronicle Live colleague Mark Douglas said he could still see the striker departing, while a report in the Sunday Mirror suggested that Chris Wilder was keen on bringing the 30-year-old back to West Brom if he is appointed manager at The Hawthorns.

The latest

As per Chronicle Live, Ryder was asked to confirm Gayle’s contract situation by a Newcastle supporter who was still unsure after reading ‘mixed reports’.

The journalist claimed: “I was told it [the new deal] had been verbally agreed or done in principle”, adding that Gayle’s family are said to be “settled” on Tyneside, hence his inclination to stay.

The 30-year-old is currently on holiday, so an official announcement could be made after his return.

The verdict

The real question mark here is whether Newcastle have moved to extend Gayle’s deal because they consider him a valuable part of the squad, or because they’re looking to protect his value. Of the striker’s 20 appearances last term, 16 came as a substitute, which certainly doesn’t suggest that he is a central figure at St James’ Park.

It does have the air of a pragmatic step from a club which probably won’t be shedding its deadwood while it remains in limbo amid the ongoing takeover saga.

In other news, Newcastle have been urged to recruit this partner to Callum Wilson.

Edgbaston the right type of wicket, says Caddick

Andrew Caddick was full of praise for the Edgbaston wicket after he took three wickets on it to help bowl out Sri Lanka for 162

Stephen Lamb30-May-2002Andrew Caddick was full of praise for the Edgbaston wicket after he took three wickets on it to help bowl out Sri Lanka for 162. Caddick moved past John Snow to become England’s eighth nost successful Test bowler, finishing with three for 47.”This is the type of wicket we should be playing on. It should perhaps be alittle quicker to get the Sri Lankans jumping around if you want to be critical, but it is a wicket you would expect in May,” said Caddick.”There are no real terrors in it, it is a little bit two-paced but the mainthing is that we bowled a couple of good deliveries that they nicked.”Caddick set aside England’s travails in the first Test at Lord’s, where Sri Lanka declared on 555 for eight in their first innings.”As far as Lord’s is concerned that is old news. You can always have a bad game and I can’t remember the last time the bowlers had a bad game for England.”Anyone can have a bad turn and the fact all four England bowlers had a badturn was a bit of a shock. But at the end of the day we didn’t perform and we should have done better.”The Somerset bowler was troubled by stomach cramps in the Lord’s Test, a reaction to medication for a rib injury. He needed cortisone injections onTuesday to guarantee his fitness for Edgbaston.

Man City fans flock to Kane development

Flocking to Twitter, many Manchester City supporters have gone wild over a development involving Tottenham Hotspur superstar Harry Kane.

The Sky Blues clinched a fifth Premier League title overall last season and third under manager Pep Guardiola.

City also reigned victorious in the Carabao Cup, winning the competition for a fourth-consecutive year in what has been a sensational record.

To top it off, they reached their first ever Champions League final – with the club now looking to build upon what was a head-turning 2020/2021 campaign.

As such, signing a new striker has been the centre of much speculation given the lack of natural options – especially after club legend Sergio Aguero’s departure from Eastlands.

Spurs star Kane has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester given he wants out of his current club, and journalist Duncan Castles has now shared a big development.

Indeed, speaking to the Transfer Window Podcast, he claims that City have already made an offer for the Englishman.

Flocking in reply to City Xtra and City Chief, who both shared the news, it’s safe to say many fans are excited as this news emerges – find all of their best verdicts down below.

Ex-Everton ace backed for Goodison return

Former Everton star Michael Ball believes Ross Barkley would welcome a return to Goodison Park this summer, and hopes the Toffees can get the deal over the line.

Barkley has spent the season on loan at Aston Villa from Chelsea, having struggled to make a real breakthrough at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea paid £15m to sign the ex-England international in 2018, and he has made 86 appearances for the club.

The 27-year-old has never played more than 27 Premier League games for the Blues in a single season.

Ball thinks that Barkley could be available this summer as Everton look to bring in some genuine dynamism to the squad, as the Toffees have a number of similar players currently in their squad.

As a result, Ball thinks the Toffees should bring their former star back to the club, and says he would welcome such a move.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, he said: “It’s an opportunity for Everton to bring a player like Ross Barkley to the football club. It’s what they need. That dimension is lacking.

“Everton have got a lot of the same players. If, say, (Gylfi) Sigurdsson is not doing too good, he comes off to bring (Andre) Gomes on. They’re a similar type of player so you’re going to get the same dimension; it’s easy for the opposition.

“I won’t call it like a plan b but it’s like having a different dimension in midfield when you get a player like Ross Barkley who’s got the drive to get the ball and run 20, 30 yards with it up the pitch. Everton are really lacking that.”

Barkley is currently valued at £18m by Transfermarkt.

Saints eye Edouard

According to The Scottish Sun, Southampton are interested in signing Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard this summer.

The Lowdown: Saints could need a striker

Southampton’s safety in the Premier League has been secured, but it has been a difficult campaign at times for the Saints.

Things could be about to become more troublesome, as well. Danny Ings is the club’s top goalscorer this term with 13 strikes in all competitions (BBC). However, his future remains uncertain as he is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal and is attracting transfer interest from Manchester City (Sky Sports) and Tottenham (Eurosport).

The Latest: Hasenhuttl eyes Edouard

As such, Southampton may need to dip into the transfer market.

It seems they already have a forward in their sights, though, as they have been linked with Edouard. Leicester City, Arsenal, Roma and Aston Villa are all also said be in pursuit, with Celtic looking for more than £20m this summer.

The Verdict: Top target

Although he has been playing in Scotland for the past few years, Edouard has a solid record. He has managed 83 goals in 167 games in all competitions for the Bhoys (Transfermarkt) and is still just 23 years of age. For France’s U21 side, he has a stunning strike rate of 17 goals in just 13 matches.

£20m would be a considerable fee – Ralph Hasenhuttl has already said the Saints are unlikely to spend more than £10m on any one player – but the departure of Ings could give them the funds to sign him. While they are not favourites to capture Edouard, the connection between Southampton and Celtic could favour the Saints – Victor Wanyama, Virgil van Dijk, Stuart Armstrong and Fraser Forster have all done well at St. Mary’s Stadium after appearing at Parkhead.

Chansiri to blame for Wednesday circus

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer has blamed Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri for the managerial merry-go-round at Hillsborough.

In recent seasons, Chansiri has shown that he is not afraid to pull the trigger when things are not looking good for Wednesday.

He dismissed Tony Pulis earlier this season despite the Welshman having only overseen 10 games in charge. As for his predecessor Garry Monk, he was dismissed after 14 month at the helm – longer than Pulis but still a short spell.

Evidently, Chansiri is an owner who has no problem with wielding the axe, something that Palmer is not too pleased about.

Discussing the matter in an exclusive interview with FFC, the ex-Wednesday player said:

“Chansiri is to blame without a shadow of a doubt, because the buck stops with him. Why has there been such a turnaround in managers? And decent managers that they’ve had gone in there, so why has there [been so many changes]? There has to be a reason for that. And I think it’s because of the control he has in terms of players going in and players going out of the club.”

Darren Moore now finds himself in the dugout at Hillsborough, leaving Doncaster Rovers at the start of March to join Wednesday. However, with the Yorkshire club on course to get relegated this season, if history is anything to go by, it would not be a surprise to see the 46-year-old depart before the 2021/22 campaign.
