Jones makes key Liverpool transfer claim

Liverpool are in for a potentially busy transfer deadline day with several transfers possibly materialising, according to reliable journalist Neil Jones.

The Lowdown: Productive January at Anfield

The Reds have had an excellent January both on and off the pitch, shining without Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita around and winning all their Premier League games.

Furthermore, Luis Diaz has arrived as a big-money signing from Porto, with the Colombian set to make Liverpool’s attack even more potent.

It could be that plenty of transfer business is conducted at Anfield on deadline day, both in terms of incomings and outgoings.

The Latest: Jones gives key update

Taking to Twitter on Monday morning, Jones claimed that Fabio Carvalho could still join from Fulham, while the likes of Neco Williams, Nat Phillips, Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi could head the other way.

He outlined: “Plenty happening at Liverpool on #deadlineday. Talks ongoing over Fabio Carvalho from Fulham – would be loaned back until summer if signed. Bournemouth likely to get Neco Williams on loan, Nat Phillips future still TBC. Minamino wants to stay, possible Origi bids?”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-19/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Lots of positives

It is great to see Liverpool looking so busy in the transfer market, especially following some fairly barren recent windows, leading to criticism of FSG from some fans.

Carvalho could be a superb long-term signing if he makes the move, having scored seven goals and registered four assists in the Championship this season, potentially being a Harvey Elliott-like addition in midfield as the Reds potentially raid Fulham again.

Meanwhile, the largely inactive Williams would benefit from a loan spell elsewhere, and receiving good money for fringe players in Phillips, Minamino and Origi is a no-brainer, should the right offer come along. None of those look set to be stalwarts of the future at Anfield.

Rangers: James McAtee news emerges

Rangers’ hopes of signing James McAtee in January were stymied by his current club, according to Heart & Hand.

The lowdown

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder has made three senior appearances for Manchester City, with The Athletic correspondent Sam Lee reporting on transfer deadline day that the teenager had rejected a loan proposal from Rangers, as well as clubs in the English Football League, Spain, Netherlands and Belgium.

The Gers were able to recruit another Premier League youngster on a temporary basis last month, with winger Amad Diallo joining from City’s local rivals Manchester United until the end of the season.

The latest

However, official Rangers media partner Heart & Hand took to Twitter to challenge The Athletic’s report, claiming that McAtee’s chances of moving to Ibrox were hindered by his club rather than the player.

Their tweet read: “James McAtee didn’t reject a loan move to Rangers. Rangers are in a long line of admirers for the player unfortunately headed by Pep Guardiola who has told him he is staying at Manchester City!”

The verdict

McAtee looks a real gem. His record at under-23 level for Man City is outstanding – 44 games, 23 goals, 16 assists. It’s little wonder that Guardiola has previously described him as an “exceptional” young talent.

He seems to be too good to be playing youth football at this stage, so from that point of view it’s perhaps slightly surprising that City aren’t willing to loan him out to get him some more senior experience.

The reigning Premier League champions are said to be ‘confident’ that McAtee will sign a new contract in the coming weeks, with his current Etihad Stadium deal set to expire in less than 18 months.

If an agreement can’t be reached for whatever reason, perhaps Rangers will be one of the clubs who might look to pounce at that stage.

Newcastle set to walk away from Carlos

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle United and their efforts to sign Sevilla enforcer Diego Carlos…

What’s the talk?

Sky Sports reporter Pete Graves has revealed that the Magpies are now set to abandon their pursuit of the Brazilian defender due to issues with his parent club’s negotiations.

He tweeted: “#nufc ready to walk away from Diego Carlos deal. It’s thought original price quoted was €30m but Sevilla changed (

) numerous times. Tough on player who’s desperate to sign. Newcastle now actively looking elsewhere. They have money, won’t be taken advantage of.”

This comes after his colleague Kaveh Solhekol claimed that the Spanish club were ready to work on a transfer for a set price of £38m.

He told The Transfer Show, via Football Daily: “I sense there is a bit of momentum building today from the few people I’ve spoken to and they seem to be saying if Newcastle offer €45m, £38m, then there is a deal there to be done.

“I think it is a question of money now. Money talks, of course, in the transfer market and Sevilla, historically, always play hardball when it comes to transfers. Why wouldn’t they?”

Gutted

Newcastle fans will surely be left devastated by this news, as it suggests that Carlos will not be lining up for the Magpies this season.

The supporters will be devasted because the Brazilian could have been a sublime signing for the club. He has been in terrific form for Sevilla this season and could have improved Eddie Howe’s starting XI. The 28-year-old has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.13 this term, helping his team to an impressive haul of 10 clean sheets in 21 league matches.

This suggests that he is able to perform consistently to a high level and could have come to England and replicated his displays for the Toon, helping them to keep shutouts in the Premier League. Therefore, he could have been a key player for Newcastle by winning them points with his stout defending.

Spanish football analyst Domagoj Kostanjšak previously compared him to other defenders in Europe and heaped praise on the centre-back, saying: “He’s a really physical player – he’s built like a tank and they don’t call him ‘The Beast’ for no reason. He’s really good in the air and he’s decent on the ball as well – you have to be under Julen Lopetegui.

“He’s been in my top three or four centre-backs in Spain this season, along with Raphael Varane and Inigo Martinez – he’s been a bit of a revelation. He’s playing the best football of his career and he immediately settled in. I would say there is a shade of Kalidou Koulibaly about him – not the same quality, of course, but I would compare him to him.”

This highlights the standard at which Carlos has been playing of late, coupled with his statistics, and this is why Newcastle fans will be gutted that the club are now set to miss out on a deal for him due to Sevilla’s antics.

Victoria in control as Queensland struggle

ScorecardClint McKay’s 3 for 50 hurt Queensland•Getty Images

Victoria are closing in on hosting the Sheffield Shield final after taking a 151-run lead over Queensland on the second day in Brisbane. The Bulls were dismissed for 170 in reply to Victoria’s 316 and the visitors lost Chris Rogers as they finished on 1 for 5.Pitches at the Gabba usually get better as the game goes on but the Bushrangers, who moved into the final with the first-innings points, already have a significant advantage in the top-of-the-table clash. The Bulls were never allowed to get going in their chase and were relieved when Chris Hartley, the No.6, compiled 47 as they scraped past the follow-on figure of 166.Clint McKay was a key man with 3 for 50, removing Ryan Broad, Wade Townsend and Craig Philipson. Damien Wright was also important with 3 for 41 and Darren Pattinson claimed the valuable double of James Hopes (16) and Chris Simpson (4) to prevent a local recovery.Hopes had taken five wickets early in the day as Victoria resumed on 6 for 265 and added 51. John Hastings was caught behind in the opening over and Hopes then picked up McKay for 6 to finish with 5 for 66.Michael Hill was 32 not out while Pattinson (17) was the last man out, giving Luke Feldman his second wicket. Feldman struck again in the final over of the day to remove Rogers with a yorker to give his side some hope of a comeback.

Newcastle had transfer howler with Krafth

A section of Newcastle fans were found partying outside St James’ Park when PIF officially completed their takeover of the club from Mike Ashley.

Supporters were then given another reason to rejoice as the club decided to take down the Sports Direct signage from the ground this week, removing sizeable reminders of the much-maligned former owner.

However, it will take longer to reshape the dysfunctional playing squad he created, with the Magpies currently sitting 19th in the Premier League table.

Transfer howler

One signing with whom the Sports Direct mogul had a complete howler was the addition of Emil Krafth from Ligue 1 side Amiens in the summer of 2019.

Ashley reportedly sanctioned a £5m transfer fee for the right-back. The defender signed a four-year, initial £32k-per-week, deal at St James’ Park, which went up to £37k-per-week this term. This means that he earned £1.6m per season in his first two years at the club and is set to earn £1.9m by the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

He averaged a dismal WhoScored rating of 6.30 in the Premier League in 17 games in his first season on Tyneside. He then recorded an average score of 6.47 in 16 games in 2020/21 and is currently averaging a rating of 6.23 this term, having started five games and made one more appearance as a substitute.

In terms of WhoScored ratings, he has ranked 19th (current), 16th (2020/21) and 24th (2019/20) in the Magpies squad in his two-and-a-half seasons at the club to date. This highlights how he has never been able to consistently perform to a good enough standard under Steve Bruce or Eddie Howe.

Former Arsenal forward Ian Wright previously claimed that the Sweden international was ‘out of his depth’ under Bruce last year, saying: “I thought Krafth was way too out of his depth there, playing in that position. Steve Bruce, with the players that he’s got and how it’s going, they’re doing the best that they could but the mistakes cost them.”

At the time of writing (11/12/21), Transfermarkt value him at just £3.15m – a drop-off from the £5m Newcastle paid for him just two years ago. This shows that he has been a disaster of a signing both in terms of his on-pitch performances and from the financial aspect of the deal, as his current valuation suggests that the club would have to take a loss on him if they decided to sell.

Therefore, Ashley had a howler with the signing of Krafth in 2019, and the defender is just one example of the remaining issues from the former owner’s tenure that PIF will need to fix in the coming weeks, months and years.

Celtic set to complete three signings

Celtic are close to completing the Parkhead arrivals of three players in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Japanese publication The Mainichi, who claim that Celtic are nearing deals for all three of Daizen Maeda, Yosuke Ideguchi and Reo Hatate ahead of the winter market.

The report goes on to state that the club are progressing well in discussions with Yokohama F Marinos and Gamba Osaka, the respective clubs of Maeda and Ideguchi, regarding deals, as both sides are happy to sanction the sale of their respective stars.

However, it is also said the Bhoys talks with Kawasaki Frontale, the club of Hatate, are at a less advanced stage, as the J League side are currently demanding much more for the 24-year-old than Celtic are prepared to offer.

Ange will be buzzing

With Ange Postecoglou openly stating that he is willing to raid the Japanese top flight of its most impressive players in January, the fact that Celtic appear close to signing three of Japan’s brightest talents is sure to have left the 56-year-old buzzing.

Indeed, over his 36 J League appearances this season, centre-forward Maeda scored a whopping 23 goals, registered three assists and created four big chances for his teammates, with these returns seeing the £990k-rated man average a SofaScore match rating of 7.09 – ranking him as his club’s joint sixth-best performer in the top flight of Japanese football.

Meanwhile, over Hatate’s 30 league fixtures, the versatile midfielder scored five goals, provided two assists and created three big chances, with these metrics seeing him average a SofaScore match rating of 7.16, while central midfielder Ideguchi averaged a SofaScore match rating of 6.76 over his own 29 J League appearances.

As such, should Celtic indeed go on to land all three of these players in January, not only would they continue Postecoglou’s Japanese revolution at Parkhead – following the summer signing of Kyogo Furuhashi – they would also represent a huge step in the 56-year-old’s revolution of the Bhoys first-team squad – something that would only appear to bode well for the club’s title chances this season.

Phil Hay hails return of key Leeds duo

Leeds United duo Luke Ayling and Patrick Bamford have made ‘really encouraging’ returns from injury, according to journalist Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: Key Leeds pair return to action

The Whites have had make do without the influential pair since the middle of September, with injuries striking both of them down.

Both Ayling and Bamford made hugely pleasing returns to action on Monday evening, though, playing for Leeds’ under-23s in their 3-2 defeat to Manchester City.

The right-back came off at half-time and the striker played the full match, with both looking set to play a big part in the first team’s busy December schedule.

The Latest: Hay in positive spirits

Taking to Twitter after Monday’s game, Hay admitted that it was “really encouraging to see” the duo back on the pitch, his tweet accompanied by an article for The Athletic which outlined ‘how Ayling can help to revive one of Leeds’ core strengths and why Bamford is inevitably missed’.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side host Crystal Palace in the Premier League tonight, and while that match will surely come too soon for the returning pair, they could hopefully feature at home to Brentford on Sunday.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-25/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Major boost for Whites

Put simply, Leeds aren’t the same team without Ayling and Bamford around, with both proving to be pivotal figures in recent campaigns.

The former provides constant energy from right-back, not to mention leadership having captained the Whites in the past, while the latter’s goals have been missed hugely. He netted 17 in the top flight last season; Leeds have managed just seven in the eight matches he has missed since getting injured at Newcastle in mid-September.

Bamford also has the ability to bring the best out in others, dropping deep to link up with team-mates and creating space in behind for the wingers.

Leeds need to get their season going after a slow start, and the impending returns of Ayling and Bamford could be exactly the spark for a winter revival.

Newcastle handed Aaron Ramsey boost

A key update has emerged on Newcastle transfer target Aaron Ramsey, regarding Juventus’ plans for him ahead of the January window.

What’s the talk?

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the Italian giants are ‘still planning’ to sell the Wales international midway through the campaign, as he is not a part of their plans moving forward.

The Magpies, and fellow Premier League side Everton, are reportedly interested in landing the former Arsenal man to bolster their squads.

Romano wrote: “Juventus are still planning to find a solution to sell Aaron Ramsey in January. He’s out of the plans and looking for a potential new challenge.”

Delight

This key update from Romano will surely leave Newcastle fans feeling delighted as it provides the Magpies with a boost in their pursuit of the midfielder ahead of January.

The reporter’s Tweet indicates that Juventus will be actively looking to move him on and that means Eddie Howe will not be trying to pluck a player away from a club that will show opposition to a transfer.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-newcastle-howe-ter-stegen” title= “Read the latest Newcastle news!”]

Fans will be buzzing with this because Ramsey could be an excellent addition to Howe’s squad and add an injection of quality and experience to the side ahead of the second half of the season.

The Welsh international is well-versed in playing top-flight football in England having made 262 Premier League appearances for Arsenal. He has also played 49 Serie A games for Juventus, scoring five goals and providing six assists for the Old Lady since his move in 2019.

Ramsey produced 65 goals and 65 assists in 371 matches for Arsenal in all competitions during his time at The Emirates and this, along with his stats for Juventus, shows that he has the quality to arrive at St. James’ Park and have an impact in the final third from midfield. His vast experience also suggests that he could help the younger players in the squad, as he has been there and done it at the top level fora number of years.

Therefore, he could be a shrewd addition to the playing squad and one fans should get excited about. This is why Romano’s update regarding Juventus’ willingness to cash in on him in January will leave the supporters feeling delighted.
