Ravi Rampaul may be in line for a recall to the West Indies team for the third Test in Dominica

Ravi Rampaul may be in line for a recall to the West Indies team for the third Test in Dominica. The hosts’ captain Darren Sammy revealed that Fidel Edwards was complaining of back soreness after rain curtailed a tantalisingly poised second match in Trinidad, making Rampaul’s inclusion a distinct possibility.Having missed selection for the limited overs-portion of the tour due to dengue fever and a shoulder problem, Rampaul returned to the squad ahead of the first Test in Barbados but was lacking in conditioning and match rhythm. However he has trained consistently with the hosts over the two weeks and is now ideally placed to reinforce the XI that acquitted themselves well at Queen’s Park Oval on a slow, turning pitch.”So far we’ve been using the same combination and it’s worked for us,” Sammy said. “Fidel has a slight pain in his back so we’ll monitor that. If not then Ravi comes in and I know Ravi will do the job for us.”Sammy noted that West Indies’ bowling had steadily improved in its discipline and perseverance over the past 18 months, Kemar Roach providing the best evidence of this development by taking 10 wickets for the match in Port-of-Spain, a sterling achievement on any surface but particularly meritorious on a pitch that saw spinners take the new ball in three innings out of four.”It’s not only this series, it’s been the last year and a half, there’s been a massive improvement in the bowling department,” Sammy said. “We can get 20 wickets in Test matches and we bowl out teams … that was something we were not doing in the past. So definitely the bowling has improved, especially under coach [Ottis] Gibson and it will continue.Squad for third Test

“To have a guy like Ravi Rampaul, who took so many wickets for last year on the bench shows we have depth. Kemar has been very good against the Australians and Fidel has been bowling well, without any luck, and I know Ravi is eager for his opportunity.”Assad Fudadin, the Guyanese left-hander, has been called up to the squad for the Dominica Test, while the legspinner Devendra Bishoo has been dropped. The vice-captain Kirk Edwards has not recovered in time from a knee problem to be considered for the final match of the series, his fitness for the England tour that follows a significant factor in the decision. Clyde Butts, the West Indies chairman of selectors, said Fudadin offered solid batting and a medium pace option.”Fudadin has been a member of the West Indies A Team for a while now and we have seen signs of development and improvement,” Butts said. “This year he batted well in the Regional Four-Day Tournament, and made over 500 runs including two centuries. He was very consistent in the middle-order. He can also bowl medium-pace and that is an asset.”As for Bishoo, Sammy said he had told the young spinner not to be too despondent, for he remained part of longer term plans. However Sammy indicated that Bishoo needed to go away and relocate his best touch, having struggled for impact in the first Test against Australia.”We just had a team talk and what I said to Bishoo was he’s been a warrior to us, especially last year, but sometimes you lose form,” Sammy said. “I told him I know deep down he will come back stronger because that’s the sort of player he is.”

Saad Altaf rips through Rawalpindi

Wickets tumbled on the second day at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium where State Bank of Pakistan finished on top against Rawalpindi. Starting the day on 162 for 4, SBP were bowled out for 238. Reeling at 173 for 7 at one stage, they recovered thanks to a lower-order resistance from Rameez Alam and Gulraiz Sadaf, who chipped in with useful contributions. For Rawalpindi, seamer Mohammad Rameez picked up five wickets for 38. While the bowlers brought Rawalpindi back into the match, the batsmen let them down. Usman Saeed managed a top score of 22 in an innings that was ripped apart by seamer Saad Altaf, who grabbed 7 for 59, his career-best effort. He helped SBP bowl out Rawalpindi for 121 in just 30 overs. Having secured a lead of 117, SBP were 24 without loss by the close.Water and Power Development Authority held the advantage over Islamabad at the Diamond Club Ground in Islamabad. By stumps on the second day, they had secured a 52-run lead with six wickets in hand. WAPDA lost Rafatullah Mohmand, Asif Khan and Ayaz Tasawwar after the trio had got starts but Aamer Sajjad and Bilal Khilji rebuilt the innings and turned the tide. Sajjad struck 13 fours and a six in his unbeaten 106, his eleventh first-class ton, and added 148 for the fourth wicket with Khilji, who made 70 before being dismissed. At stumps, WAPDA were 284 for 4.Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited piled up 498 for 9 in their first innings against Abbottabad at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium. The hosts were 82 for 3 at stumps, the initiative still firmly with the visitors. ZTBL were resting comfortably at 305 for 3 overnight and though they lost Shahid Yousuf for 83 early in the day, Haris Sohail built on his half-century to finish with 151, his fourth first-class century. Zohaib Khan supported him with 51 in a fifth-wicket stand worth 116. Seamer Ahmed Jamal helped reduce the damage somewhat and ZTBL eventually declared. In their response, Abbottabad lost opener Rameez Ahmed, Almar Afridi and Asif Ali before the close, still 416 runs adrift.Faisalabad had the edge over Habib Bank Limited in an intriguing clash at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad. At 219 for 8 overnight, Faisalabad folded for 247 on the second morning; Danish Kaneria picked up 6 for 91. HBL, however, capitulated in their response. Only Khaqan Arsal put up any significant resistance with his 71; seamer Abdur Rauf collected 5 for 53, Naseer Akram took 3 for 41 and all HBL could manage was 156 in 55.5 overs, conceding a lead of 91. There were more twists in store: Fahad Masood removed opener Shahid Siddiq and nightwatchman Shoaib Shah in quick time, leaving Faisalabad on 13 for 2, a lead of 104.National Bank of Pakistan were on track of taking control of their contest against Karachi Blues at the National Stadium in Karachi. Left-arm seamer Wahab Riaz tore through the Karachi batting, which had won its team the honours on day one, picking up six wickets. His victims included the centurion Asad Baig in a collapse during which Karachi lost six wickets for 49 runs. NBP replied strongly and were in an excellent position to take a first-innings lead, reaching 227 for 2 by stumps. Opener Nasir Jamshed made an unbeaten 127 and Aqeel Anjum supported him in a stand of 198 that is still ongoing, helping NBP overcome the loss of two early wickets. NBP are now 71 runs behind with eight wickets in hand.Big centuries from opener and captain Kamran Sajid and Faisal Iqbal helped Pakistan International Airlines amass 505 against Sialkot at the Jinnah Stadium in Sialkot. Kamran went on to add 51 more to his overnight score of 122, while Faisal, on 46 at stumps on day two, made an unbeaten 165. He struck 22 fours while his centurion partner struck 24; the pair’s stand was worth 204. Faisal also shared productive partnerships with Fahad Iqbal and Shoaib Khan snr before his captain declared, with just four wickets down. In their response, Sialkot lost opener Jawad Ahmed for 10 and ended the day on 62 for 1.

Leicestershire hold nerve in Eliminator

One-over Eliminator
ScorecardWill Jefferson booked a spot in the final for Leicestershire by smashing three boundaries in the Super Over•Getty Images

Twenty20 Finals Day was introduced to its first one-over Eliminator as a mad-cap semi-final swung one way and the other before settling in Leicestershire’s favour as Will Jefferson clubbed 15 runs off four balls in a dramatic finish. The victory booked Leicestershire both a place in the final and a spot in the Champions League qualifier next month, but for now their thoughts will be on the Birmingham finale. After rain had twice curtailed the game to leave Lancashire needing 80 from 11 overs, Gareth Cross clubbed a six off the final delivery to leave the scores level and set up the Eliminator. Stephen Moore had been Lancashire’s highest scorer in the tournament and was given the responsibility of setting the target with Steven Croft. Moore started with a six down the ground and added a four as the fielder at deep-square leg misjudged on the boundary. Claude Henderson, however, finished with two dot balls.Leicestershire had to chase 14 in their over and Jefferson made it look easy. Earlier he had seemed in good order during a 15-ball 23 but found better range against Gary Keedy. The first delivery was clattered through midwicket for four and the second down the ground. With four needed from the last two balls, Jefferson mowed a huge six deep into the stands over midwicket, sparking wild celebrations from both the Edgbaston crowd and the Leicestershire players.Though it ultimately made for a thrilling finish, the clouds that stalked the ground all day twice delivered downpours to interrupt the game. The first, in Leicestershire’s innings, lopped the match down to 18 overs a side but the second – after eight overs and one ball of the chase proved more decisive.Lancashire had skipped out of the blocks to take 38 from the five Powerplay overs but were bogged down by Henderson’s left-arm spin to be 53 for 1 when the rain arrived. With three games to squeeze into the day the chase was curtailed by the delay to leave Lancashire needing 27 from 17 more balls.Their response was to hack wildly. Batsmen walked in and off a procession as five wickets fell. Joshua Cobb, whose contribution had been limited to a diamond duck, was given the penultimate six balls and delivered a fearless over of offspin that gave away just six runs and brought two wickets. Wayne White’s final over had been superb until the last delivery – a low full toss – was dispatched by Cross over long-on to tie the scores. The crowd had started the day quietly but became ever more gripped by the wildly fluctuating match and were in raptures by the time the six set up an eliminator.Up until that Super Over, the first semi of Finals Day had proved a tale of two matches. Batsmen profiting against seamers and hamstrung against spin. Through the match 18 overs from the quicker men went for 157 while the spinners shared five wickets for 44 in 11. Hampshire’s trio of twirlers would have eyed each rasping turner with giddy anticipation. While the wicket may have raised eyebrows it was not unexpected. Peter Moores, the Lancashire coach, said afterwards he had no complaints. “The wicket played pretty much what we thought,” he said. “Edgbaston is pretty consistent, it sticks in the pitch a bit, mix your pace, it turns a bit. And it’ll turn a bit more probably as the day goes on. But its nothing different. Normally 150 will be a good score, and that’ll hold sway throughout the day.”That Leicestershire ended up victorious was all the more unlikely after they lost their way batting first against Keedy and Stephen Parry’s left-arm spinners. With the ball gripping violently they were reduced to 82 for 5 by the 12th over. But, after a slow start Abdul Razzaq launched three sixes and two fours – sharing a crucial 40-run stand with Paul Nixon to haul them up 132. It proved enough, just, to extend Nixon’s career that little bit more.

Bayliss backs Muralitharan to play quarter-final

Trevor Bayliss, Sri Lanka’s coach, has said that Muttiah Muralitharan looks good to get back to match fitness for Sri Lanka’s quarter-final against England on Saturday

Sidharth Monga23-Mar-2011Trevor Bayliss, Sri Lanka’s coach, has said that Muttiah Muralitharan looks good to get back to match fitness for Sri Lanka’s quarter-final against England on Saturday. Murali had sustained a hamstring injury during Sri Lanka’s comprehensive win against New Zealand last Friday. That he didn’t bowl in the nets today – three days before the game – would have been a concern, but Bayliss said Murali had managed to play with niggles in the past, and this should not be too different.”He didn’t bowl against the batsmen in the nets, but he did bowl for some 20 minutes at the back,” Bayliss said. “We are very confident that he will play, and I think he’s pretty confident he will play as well. He’s a guy that has played through a few niggles in the past, and I’m sure he’ll be fine, come game day.”Even on one leg, Murali was a puzzle New Zealand couldn’t solve in Mumbai. He spent time off the field and therefore started late, coming on in the 18th over. After his first over, he rushed off the field again, but came back to rip the heart out of New Zealand’s middle order, dismissing Ross Taylor, Kane Williamson, Scott Styris and James Franklin. It is hardly a wonder that Murali will be a starter even if he is not completely fit against a side that is historically not known to be great against spin; a side that could not break free from the stranglehold of the Bangladesh spinners in a league game in this tournament. Bayliss had no doubts about Murali’s importance to the team, but also said that the side is not as singularly reliant on him as in the past.”He’s certainly an important part of the team,” Bayliss said. “What we have been trying to achieve here is to try and get some of our young players to live up to world-class standards. Over the last few years, we have had a number of young debutants playing the game; you have a look at some of the guys like [Ajantha] Mendis, [Angelo] Mathews, Thisara Perera, those type of guys have done extremely well and have played a big part in the success of our team.”For Bayliss personally, any of the next three games could be his last as Sri Lanka’s coach. He wants all three of them. “A successful three games would be nice, but all along the way what we’ve tried to do is play good cricket and give ourselves a chance to win. We believe if we play good cricket, we’ll be very difficult to beat.”

Masakadza dropped from World Cup squad

While there is yet to be any official word from Zimbabwe Cricket, it would appear that there might be a few surprises in Zimbabwe’s squad for the World Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Jan-2011While there is yet to be any official word from Zimbabwe Cricket, it would appear that there might be a few surprises in Zimbabwe’s squad for the World Cup. Opening batsman Hamilton Masakadza has paid a heavy price for his poor form in 2010 and is apparently not included in a preliminary 20-man squad, while Sean Ervine may well be in line for an international comeback after his name was included in press reports about the potential team.Masakadza, 27, is one of the country’s most experienced batsmen and has been a dominant force in domestic cricket for the last few years. After a prolific run in 2009, when he scored 1,087 runs in ODIs – the fourth best returns in world cricket that year – Masakadza’s form slumped alarmingly in 2010 and he averaged just 19.00 in ODIs for the national side. After making his debut as a 17-year-old in 2001, Masakadza missed out on selection for the tournament in both 2003 and 2007 – the first time because he was at university in South Africa and the second because of a dip in form and a perceived lack of fluency in limited-overs cricket. He struggled in Zimbabwe’s three most recent series, against Ireland, South Africa and Bangladesh, managing just 52 runs in seven innings.Uncertainty still reigns over Ervine’s inclusion. His younger brother, Craig, is a certainty after a productive first year with the national side, but the older Ervine is still under contract with Hampshire as a local player until the end of the 2011 season. He would have to revert to overseas status if he wanted to resume his international career with Zimbabwe, but Hampshire already have legspinner Imran Tahir on their books in that role.”I’ll speak with Sean and get to the bottom of this but I expect him to be with us next year,” Hampshire manager Giles White told in December. “We’ve offered him a new deal and he’s said he’d like to take that up. I will be interested to find out more about it because he is under contract with Hampshire. I will try to contact Sean but it’s difficult as he’s on a farm in Zimbabwe, but we will get him on the phone and sort things out so we can move things forward and hopefully get some clarity.”Ervine played the last of 42 ODIs for Zimbabwe against Bangladesh at Harare Sports Club in March 2004 before becoming embroiled in the ‘rebel’ crisis and falling out with the board. He has since forged a successful career in County cricket with Hampshire, and remains part of their squad for the Caribbean Twenty20 tournament, which starts on Monday.Zimbabwe’s poor batting was the biggest let-down of their recent Bangladesh tour, and Ervine’s form and experience would certainly be a valuable asset to the national side. Zimbabwe’s batsmen will also be undergoing an intensive training programme ahead of the World Cup, with enhanced solidity at the beginning of the innings and an ability to play spin in the middle overs being the main objectives.”We have come up with an intensive training structure so that we can try and help the guys improve their technique going into the World Cup,” assistant coach Steven Mangongo told in Zimbabwe. “The Bangladesh series served as an eye-opener because we observed some worrying frailties in our batting department.”We want them to improve so that there is a bit more stability especially during the first 15 overs of an innings. We are currently working with the batsmen together with batting coach Grant Flower and we will be joined by the national coach Alan Butcher and we also expect to get some help from Brian Lara at some point later.”Zimbabwe open their World Cup campaign against Australia in Ahmedabad on February 21 before they face Canada in Nagpur on February 28.20-man squad: Elton Chigumbura (capt), Regis Chakabva, Chamu Chibhabha, Charles Coventry, Graeme Cremer, Terry Duffin, Craig Ervine, Sean Ervine, Greg Lamb, Tino Mawoyo, Shingirai Masakadza, Chris Mpofu, Tinashe Panyangara, Ray Price, Ed Rainsford, Vusi Sibanda, Tatenda Taibu, Brendan Taylor, Prosper Utseya, Sean Williams.

Man City: Pep falls out with Sterling

La Gazzetta dello Sport, via Football Italia, have made a behind-the-scenes fall out claim involving Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola and a big name player.

The Lowdown: City race heats up…

The Sky Blues and Guardiola are set for an electric and heated end to the 2021/2022 season with City battling for both the Premier League title and their first ever Champions League.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/man-city-newest-updates/” title=”Man City newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Fierce contenders Liverpool, after their victory at home to Man United on Tuesday, have leap-frogged the English champions into first place.

City can re-gain top spot with a victory at home to Brighton this evening as the race continues, but even amid this season-defining last run of games, Eastlands chiefs are preparing for the summer window.

Indeed, major reports have surfaced in the last few days as sporting director Txiki Begiristain edges closer and closer to the signing of Norway sensation Erling Braut Haaland.

These exciting updates have been followed up by possible Etihad Stadium exit reports as La Gazzetta (via FI) make a major claim involving Guardiola and big-name Man City star Raheem Sterling.

The Latest: Pep and Sterling fall out?

According to the newspaper, Sterling is ‘no longer on good terms’ with Guardiola and his representatives seem set to offer the England international out to AC Milan.

The Rossoneri, who are currently in talks over a possible takeover from Bahraini investment fund Investcorp, could be granted a €300 million (£249m) transfer kitty in the summer – making their purchase of City’s winger realistic.

The Verdict: Interesting summer ahead…

Sterling’s future will be one of the interesting stories of City’s 2022 summer given he is out-of-contract in 2023 as things stand.

That gives Begiristain and co just two windows to either finally agree terms on an extension or decide to sell the 27-year-old, who has scored a brilliant 128 goals and assisted 93 others since joining from Liverpool in 2015.

Sterling has recently re-discovered his best form in parts after a slow start to the 21/22 campaign and the forward’s quality is also best exemplified by his phenomenal Euro 2020.

Everton boss Frank Lampard, who undertook a punditry role with the BBC last summer during the tournament, labelled Sterling an ‘excellent’ and ‘world class player’ for his performances under Gareth Southgate (BBC via football.london).

The international star clearly possesses bags of ability, as evident by his numbers with both City and England, and losing him this summer would be a big setback for Guardiola – even with his wealth of midfield talent and the possible arrival of Haaland.

Romano drops fresh MUFC update

Manchester United have officially appointed Erik ten Hag as their new manager at Old Trafford in the summer, and now Fabrizio Romano has given an update on the team the Dutch coach will build around him.

What’s the word?

According to the Italian transfer insider and journalist, Manchester United are in talks for Steve McClaren to join the coaching staff alongside their brand new manager at the end of the season.

Romano tweeted: “Mitchell van der Gaag has already accepted to join Erik ten Hag staff at Manchester United – green light from Dutch coach arrived one week ago. Contract details are still being discussed, while Steve McClaren had direct conversation with ten Hag on his possible role.”

Supporters will be excited

It’s fair to say the Red Devils have been struggling ever since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013, and, having entered their longest trophy drought in 40 years, there clearly needs to be a revolution at the club – something which is starting to finally unfold ahead of the summer.

The appointment of Ten Hag alongside a brand new team to work with him will surely excite supporters, who will undoubtedly be desperate for huge changes that can positively impact the club’s future and pull them out of their trophyless rut.

Steve McClaren making a shock return to the Premier League and Old Trafford could be exactly what Man United need to reignite their identity as winners, as the former Newcastle manager was assistant to Ferguson between 1999 and 2001, joining during the treble-winning 1998/99 campaign.

Aside from his well-known career in England, McClaren has previously worked with the new Man United boss – when Ten Hag was assistant to McClaren at FC Twente back in 2008, and the pair continue to have a close relationship.

With that being said, these big shifts in responsibilities and fresh perspectives added to the Manchester United think tank will surely be welcomed by the supporters as the club looks to rebuild their reputation and pose a threat in the challenge for trophies in the future.
