2º Coritiba – 18 pts
9º Paraná – 10 pts

Maxwell and Stoinis heading home early from IPL

Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis have joined the Australian exodus from the IPL, departing early from Kings XI Punjab

‘Losing Maxwell is a big blow’ – Bangar

Allrounders Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis have joined the Australian exodus from the IPL, departing early from Kings XI Punjab. While Maxwell left with an apparent side strain, a source within Kings XI put Stoinis’ departure down to “personal unavoidable circumstances”.*Kings XI are out of contention for the IPL playoffs, and Maxwell told Cricket Australia medical staff that he has been feeling increasingly sore over recent matches. CA’s national team physio David Beakley said Maxwell’s fitness would now need to be assessed ahead of Australia’s departure for the limited-overs triangular series in the Caribbean, also featuring West Indies and South Africa, later this month.”Glenn reported increasing soreness in his left abdomen area following last night’s match and as such a decision was made for him to return home for further assessment and treatment ahead of the West Indies tour,” Beakley said. “From the information we have so far, the injury doesn’t appear to be something that will prevent Glenn from participating in this tour, but we are keen to give him the necessary time to recover before departing to the West Indies at the end of this month.”Steven Smith, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh and John Hastings had also departed the competition before its completion. Maxwell’s tournament failed to live up to expectations, featuring a pair of eye-catching half centuries amid a wider trend of insubstantial scores.Stoinis’ contributions were more weighty. He scored 146 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 135.18, including a match-winning 52 against Delhi Daredevils – a game in which he took three top-order wickets as well. He also had a big impact in the match against Mumbai Indians, when he claimed his best figures in T20 cricket – 4 for 15 – in another Kings XI victory.*15.00 GMT, May 17: This article was updated when the news of Marcus Stoinis going home came in.

Worcestershire favourites after Kervezee's surprise

The spectre of Saeed Ajmal loomed over Worcestershire’s return to Division One. Last year Essex coach Paul Grayson said that if umpires had been “brave” enough to call Ajmal for an illegal action Worcestershire would not have been promoted.

Last year Essex coach Paul Grayson said that if umpires had been “brave” enough to call Ajmal for an illegal action Worcestershire would not have been promoted. When he returns, as Ajmal 2.0 after refining an action that extended to an average of 40 degrees, Worcestershire will dream of him evoking the destruction of his 63 wickets at 16.47 last season. But in the meantime they need to make sure that there is not too much for Ajmal to do. On the third day at Hove, Worcestershire looked to have uncovered a solution: two men combined to do what, last season, was the work of one Ajmal. The identity of the first name was not surprising. Sachithra Senanayake, another man to have remodelled his action following the ICC clampdown on throwing last year, was signed expressly to provide his best Ajmal impression. After beginning the match bowling too short, Senanayake located a fuller length, relentlessly probing outside off stump. He snared the last four wickets with a healthy dollop of bounce and turn on a pitch that might have got Monty Panesar longing for a return to the South Coast. But the identity of his offspin twin, who dismissed three of Sussex’s top five, was rather more surprising. Before today Alexei Kervezee had taken two first-class wicket – both for Netherlands – in 88 games. He was even listed as a medium-pace bowler. For the second time in the match, Ed Joyce and Matt Machan added a sparkling century stand for the second wicket after the early loss of Luke Wells. With a sumptuous day to enjoy, it provided the perfect backdrop for locals to enjoy the ground’s generous selection of gelatos; the pistachio comes particularly recommended. While less belligerent than during his 70-ball century in the first innings, Machan counter-punched pugnaciously after a dicey start – surviving a sharp slip chance off Charlie Morris on 4 – and it might have been with a little desperation that Daryl Mitchell asked Kervezee to bowl.”It was a surprise,” Kervezee admitted. But over his 15-over spell either side of lunch, the game was transformed. Machan was trapped lbw playing across the line to a quicker ball and Luke Wright was caught at short leg to a ball with extra bounce. And then, most significantly of all, a deliciously flighted ball tempted Ed Joyce, who had held Sussex together with his typical blend of serenity and panache, into slashing to slip.Despite some pyrotechnics from Ajmal Shazhad, including a slog sweep for six off Senanayake, Sussex were becalmed, and their last five wickets mustered only 57. It was a bowling performance of tenacity and skill from Worcestershire, and not all about spin, either: Morris moved the new ball with menace while Jack Shantry was typically wholehearted. At times only the grunt Shantry emitted in his delivery stride disturbed the tranquility at Hove; clean-bowling Ben Brown after a sprightly 44 was a wicket well earned. For Worcestershire to record their first victory in Division One since July 2012 – when Moeen Ali took 12 wickets at Old Trafford – the 14 overs they had to endure tonight shaped up as crucial. It was certainly enough time for Steve Magoffin, who has 207 first-class wickets for Sussex at 20 apiece, to ravage their top order. Not on this occasion. The rangy Magoffin began with a wide, and Richard Oliver and Daryl Mitchell both exuded calm at the crease, knocking off 47 of the 247 needed. With Tymal Mills very unlikely to bowl due to a back complaint, the onus falls more than ever on Magoffin. As well as their quicks, Sussex also have Ashar Zaidi’s left-arm darts and Luke Wells’ legspin, which claimed two wickets in the first innings, but Hove has become greedy for more venomous twirlymen.”Mushtaq Ahmed would be nice right now,” Luke Wright said after the close. In his absence, as Wright conceded, Worcestershire should be considered slight favourites to chase down an even 200 on the final day.

Vince, Trott give Lions slender lead

ScorecardJames Vince played his “best knock in this environment” according to Graham Thorpe•Getty Images

An absorbing day’s cricket, the best in this short series, was vividly interrupted by the kind of lightning and thunder more often associated with matches on the High Veldt. Bloemfontein falls into the same summer rain belt and a restart was not possible for almost two hours. Just as well for England Lions, who, 161 runs behind on first innings, had lost three second innings wickets and both Jonathan Trott and James Vince had been dropped. Their lead is far from substantial. As it was, Trott went not long after the resumption. He did reach a half-century, including seven fours, before Dane Piedt had him leg before pushing forward with one that did not turn. The offspinner declared it to be his slider. Vince remained until the premature close, six of the remaining 19 overs still to be bowled. His cover driving, as ever, was the salient feature in his unbeaten 61 with 11 fours, but he will need to remain at the crease for a while longer. Before the interlude on this fast-drying ground, several thousand feet above sea level, the Lions lost their first three wickets for 81. Had Vince not been dropped when on four by Rudi Second, who has not excelled in this series behind the stumps, and Trott not been badly missed at gully by Stiaan van Zyl – a sitter, this, in any form of cricket, but especially at this level – and the thunderstorm not arrived, the final day’s play might well not have been needed. The expression on the face of the bowler, Rory Kleinveldt, a friend of Trott’s from their days in schools cricket, said it all.A wicket fell in the first over of the innings. Kleinveldt, who has the kind of backside advocated for fast bowling by F.S. Trueman and who will surely take wickets for Northamptonshire when the ball is nibbling around in springtime, accounted for Sam Robson, who played on. Adam Lyth, partnered now by his Yorkshire compatriot Alex Lees, square cut Chris Morris uppishly for four and then drove Kleinveldt delightfully to the long-off boundary.

Thorpe sets Lions target

Graham Thorpe, England’s lead batting coach, said the Lions would need to bat until lunch – and maybe beyond – given that 98 overs are still to be bowled on day four.
“We have not played our best cricket but if we can leave South Africa A to make 230, it could be interesting. The uneven bounce we are seeing could help us. That was the best innings I have seen from James Vince in this environment – he took heart from his batting in Paarl and made some fighting runs here.”
Asked if South Africa A had sufficient remaining time in which to win, Kasigo Rabada said: “It is going to be tough. But it was a day four pitch today. Some balls were staying low and others popping a bit off a length. We don’t want to leave ourselves with a target that is too tricky.
“We felt we could get Jonathan Trott caught at leg slip or maybe outside off stump as he shimmies at the bowler and maybe that causes him to fish at the ball.”

Lees, too, was soon excelling, leaning into a square cover drive off Kleinveldt, who switched ends. Stay in for an hour on this pitch and batting is that much more straightforward. But what occurred was that Lyth, that fine driver through the cover ring, attempted to put away a ball of full length from Kagiso Rabada and edged to a widish slip: 78 for 2. Lees followed three runs later, bowled by a slower ball from the same bowler that he simply did not sight.Trott, fiddling interminably with the buckles of his pads, his concentration disrupted by Justin Ontong’s field changes, got off the mark and off a pair with his trademark flick through midwicket off Rabada. Then, facing Morris from Loch Logan End, he moved across his stumps, instinctively swiped at an inswinger and was almost caught at leg slip, as he had been in the first innings. Trott evidently is not changing his game – it has, after all, brought him considerable success. That same over, Morris, this time pitching shorter, was swung away for four. Then came van Zyl’s abject miss, a slower ball from Kleinveldt almost steered towards him. The fielder then found himself in the attack, but to no avail: Vince promptly drove his medium pace to the cover boundary. At tea, the Lions had a lead of 10 runs. Next came lightning so close to the ground and so spectacular that the umpires and players were off the field before it had begun to rain.In the morning, South Africa A lost their remaining three wickets for 32 runs in nine overs. Kleinveldt pulled Boyd Rankin for four, then swished at the next ball and was caught behind. Rabada was also taken by Jonny Bairstow, trying to leave alone one from Liam Plunkett and, three balls later, Piedt pushed tentatively forward at the same bowler and lost his off stump. It was a telling lead. South Africa A will also benefit through play beginning at 10 a.m. on the final day in an attempt to make up for lost time.

Shehzad suffers minor skull fracture

Ahmed Shehzad, Pakistan’s opening batsman, has been diagnosed with a minor skull fracture after being hit on the helmet by a bouncer from Corey Anderson on the second day of the first Test against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi. Shehzad will be monitored closely over the next 48 hours and may have to undergo decompression on the fracture if his pain does not subside. The incident took place in the last over before lunch when Shehzad attempted a hook shot off Anderson but missed the ball, which crashed into the right side of his helmet. The injury caused Shehzad so much pain that he dropped his bat on to the stumps as he wheeled away and collapsed to the ground. He was dismissed hit wicket, after scoring a career-best 176, and walked off the field holding his jaw.Pakistan team manager Moin Khan said the scans had shown a depressed fracture of the zygomatic arch of the skull. “The specialist surgeon has confirmed minor fracture and has advised 48 hours of close monitoring. In case the pain doesn’t subside then the surgeon may opt for decompression,” Moin said.Anderson said he had not immediately realised the seriousness of the incident and was quickly concerned for Shehzad. “The wicket was the first I saw and you celebrate – we’d been out there a long time and wickets were hard to come by – but his health was the next concern.”I heard he came back to the ground, which is pleasing, you never want to see anyone get hurt. I’ve seen plenty of people in that position before and it’s not a nice feeling. Credit to him, it was an unbelievable innings.”Shehzad was later spotted in the dressing room, watching Pakistan bowl.

Ibexes get on board with one-run win

A round-up of the Haier Cup National T20 games played on September 23, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Sep-2014Group DSeamer Atif Jabbar bowled three dot balls in the final over, as Dera Murad Jamali Ibexes held on for a one-run win against Bahawalpur Stags in Karachi.Chasing 142, Stags lost their opener Hamid Ali early, but were buoyed by a 48-run partnership between the captain Imranullah Aslam (25) and Naeemuddin (32). However, two quick blows from the legspinner Abid Ali (2 for 23) thwarted Stags’ momentum and reduced them to 71 for 4, with still 71 to get off 53 deliveries.Faisal Mubashir kept Stags hoping with an unbeaten 25-ball 36, but he could not find the desired acceleration from his partners, as Kamran Hussain and Taimur Khan together used 21 deliveries to make just 19. Mubashir eventually brought the equation down to nine needed off the last over, but he and Waqas Khan could only manage three runs from the first five balls, meaning that Waqas’ four off the final delivery was inconsequential – a six was what was needed.Opting to bat, Ibexes had made 141 for 7 from their 20 overs. Their innings was built around a 46-ball 50 from Najeebullah, and his 56-run stand with Asif Ali, after opener Imran Khan had thumped 22 off eight to give his team a bright start.Group CFaisalabad Wolves opener Farrukh Shehzad slammed an unbeaten 72 off just 38 balls to help the team gun down 136 against AJK Jaguars with five overs to spare. Farrukh thumped nine fours and two sixes during his knock, as he and his opening partner Ali Waqas (43) raced to 102 inside 12 overs, setting Wolves up for a comprehensive eight-wicket victory.Opting to bat, Jaguars began brightly themselves, with the captain Raheel Majeed scoring a 49-ball 60, with eight fours and a six. Majeed and Adil Gulbahar put up 90 for the first wicket, but three wickets in the space of 11 deliveries hampered Jaguars’ momentum. Ghulam Murtaza offered a late surge by hitting 24 off 15 balls, but four of Wolves’ bowlers went at under six an over, as Jaguars were kept to 135 for 4.A late flourish from Mohammad Fayyaz, who scored an unbeaten 39 off 22 balls, led Peshawar Panthers to a four-wicket victory with a ball to spare against Islamabad Leopards. Chasing 157, Panthers lost Rafatullah Mohamand for a duck in the first over but were steadied by useful contributions from Nos. 2, 3 and 4. Adil Amin blitzed 39 off 21 balls but he and the others did not kick on, leaving the finish to Fayyaz. The equation was 44 off 24 balls when Fayyaz began to turn it on and Panthers won off the penultimate ball.Leopards had built their total around Babar Azam’s 70 off 51 balls. Only one other batsman – Afaq Raheem – made more than 15 as the innings suffered from the frequent loss of wickets. They were 133 for 2 in the 17th over but slipped to 137 for 6. Taj Wali took 3 for 36 for Panthers as Leopards were restricted to 156 for 6.

'We've been pretty average' – Grayson

ScorecardJim Allenby’s 79 kept Essex at bay•PA Photos

Amidst the murk and mizzle that descended for much of the day, few could have blamed the Chelmsford venerables for sliding into a state of stupor. Those that had persevered until mid-afternoon were scarcely awoken by the handful of overs that were possible as an otherwise compulsive match trickled towards a tediously flat denouement. It all ended in rather preposterous circumstances – hands were shaken the moment the clock struck five bells – but on a day that would dampen even the most hardened of spirits, a glimpse of previously unavailable luminaries will have no doubt provided a beacon of light for Essex fans. The sight of Tymal Mills, built almost like a wing-forward, turning his arm over on the outfield or Graham Napier, equipped with strapping on his groin, bustling into his delivery stride was a welcome one for Paul Grayson. His side have been beset by injuries over the past month, particularly to their bowling ranks, and one win in seven Championship outings reflects that. But, it’s been the form of the batsmen that has been the shortfall. Only James Foster and Tom Westley have scored over 300 runs this term and their defects were, once again, exposed by Glamorgan; the weather provided them with a get-out-of-jail card. So, the return of Ryan ten Doeschate – looking rather weary after his exploits in the IPL – and Ravi Bopara is more encouraging.”We’ve been pretty average,” Grayson admitted openly. “We’ve got ten points from this game but we have to move on now and try and start winning some matches because we can’t afford to lose any more ground on the teams above us. Worcestershire and Hampshire are playing some really good cricket.””Most of our top six have had ample opportunity and they’ve had a fair crack at the whip but very few have scored enough runs to merit a place in the side. Both Ravi and Ryan are available from Friday onwards and a couple will have to drop-out but they know that because the performances haven’t been up to standard.”We’ll make changes to the batting personnel but we have to move on. We’ve got an important couple of games coming up and we need to start stringing a run of form together. The lads will provide us with a welcome boost and that’s what we need.”Both Mills and Napier, alongside Bopara and ten Doeschate, will return to the squad for the short journey for Friday’s NatWest T20 Blast fixture against Surrey while David Masters is also on the verge of a return.Masters has been sidelined for a month with a quad injury and his absence has been felt more than most in the Championship. His deputies have provided consummate backup but were evidently “tired” on day four here as they toiled in taking the final Glamorgan wickets.Jim Allenby – who relishes this opposition; he’s scored two fifties and a century in his last three outings against Essex in all formats – produced a cameo akin to Foster’s first innings effort as he batted with the tail to take the sting out of any potential excitement. When he eventually fell for 79, carving Jesse Ryder to backward point, the Glamorgan lead had extended over the 200 mark and that was just about that.Perhaps Grayson had a view of protecting his run-stricken openers when Ryder and Mark Pettini were boldly sent out in pursuit of the implausible target in just 26 overs, although both were back in the pavilion before hands were shaken.”It would have been a good day’s play today but we can take a lot of positives from this game regardless,” Grayson added. “The way Fozzie and Pettini batted and Reece Topley’s form on return has been a real bonus.” But, as he’s all too aware, such positives don’t convert into points on the table.
