Which Liverpool defender should partner Dejan Lovren next season?

After recording the third-worst goals conceded record in the Premier League’s top nine last season and only ten clean sheets, Brendan Rodgers has sought to bolster his Liverpool defence with the acquisition of Southampton centre-half Dejan Lovren.

The highly-rated Croatia international officially moved to Anfield last month in a £20million deal, but it remains to be seen just how he’ll fit into the Reds’ starting XI.

The underlying question being which Liverpool centre-back would partner him best? Kolo Toure is now largely considered a reserve option, leaving it a choice between three defenders – Daniel Agger, Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho.

There’s certainly some debate to be had, with each centre-back representing rather different styles and individual strengths and weaknesses.

And being the renowned mass debaters we are at Football Fancast, this article takes a look at all three.

DANIEL AGGER

Daniel Agger tends to split opinion outside of the Liverpool fanbase. Some see him as a top Premier League centre-back, others view him however as dangerously overrated.

But I think we can all agree that the Danish stopper hasn’t quite reached the world-class-ball-playing-defender heights expected since netting his sensational debut goal for the Reds way back in 2006:

Of course, the 29 year-old comes with a lot of other qualities even if the marauding runs and 40-yard piledrivers have slipped out his game. For starters he’s the Anfield vice captain, only second to Steven Gerrard, which speaks volumes about his leadership abilities.

He also has You’ll Never Walk Alone tattooed across his knuckles, so you can’t question Agger’s commitment:

But Brendan Rodgers called on the 6 foot 3 centre-back just 16 times in a starting capacity last season – just once more than the much-maligned Kolo Toure.

The leading factor being, in my opinion at least, that Agger is prone to individual errors. He made just one less than Martin Skrtel last term in less than half the amount of game-time, as viewable below:

His handball against Stoke City on the first day of the 2013/14 campaign is a classic example (Skip to three mins):

That being said, the Danish international’s Premier League experience, now spanning nine seasons, is undoubted, and rather amazingly, he didn’t pick up a single yellow card last season, as viewable below:

But with rumours rife that Agger could be on his way to Barcelona – a deal that would suit both parties quite well at this moment in time – it seems more likely that he’ll be exiting Anfield this summer than starting for the Merseysiders next season:

MARTIN SKRTEL

A tough, old-school defender, Martin Skrtel’s thuggish mentality could compliment Dejan Lovren’s more progressive ball-playing style perfectly.

Furthermore, the Slovakia international was in fine form last term, netting seven times and making the most appearances of any outfield player on the Anfield roster, as detailed below:

Most of which followed this rather predictable template:

Likewise, on the statistical front, Skrtel bettered his centre-back partners by quite some way last season:

A 91% pass completion rate isn’t too bad either – especially considering the concerns over Skrtel’s quality in possession when Brendan Rodgers first took the Liverpool hotseat.

The 29 year-old’s greatest flaw however remains his ill-discipline. As you can see, he was the Reds’ worst centre-back in this regard last season by quite some way:

But he remains an ever-present organisational lynch-pin in an otherwise chaotic Liverpool backline and the continuity he provides at the heart of defence could prove vital next year whilst Lovren is still bedding in to life on Merseyside.

MAMADOU SAKHO

Mamadou Sakho’s first season in the Premier League was rather turbulent. The 24 year-old certainly produced good displays, but they were juxtaposed by a number of clumbsy and nervous performances.

But Brendan Rodgers splashed out a whopping £15million on the former PSG star last summer and to get full value his complete integration into the Liverpool first team must come sooner rather than later.

Sakho will be high in confidence at this moment in time too following a strong World Cup campaign with France. Here’s his vitals from the tournament and last season:

Furthermore, for a defender often alleged to be a liability in possession, the 6 foot 2 centre-back actually recorded the best pass completion rate of any Liverpool player last season, as detailed below:

Statistically, he edged out his centre-back partners on the passing front last season, the most impressive stat being his number of forward passes per match:

Despite criticisms otherwise, Sakho’s technique looks pretty solid to me:

Here’s a look at some of the France international’s best moments from last year:

WHO GETS THE NOD?

Although Sakho’s statistically-proven utility in possession might initially suggest he and Dejan Lovren are too similar in style, I believed that shared comfort on the ball could well spawn a strong partnership between the two.

It certainly falls into Brendan Rodgers’ progressive philosophy and getting both defenders, the youngest first team centre-backs available to the Anfield gaffer, working together should be the ultimate aim – the end-game scenario, if you will.

But Sakho has amassed just 18 appearances thus far in his Premier League career and Lovren, likewise, only 31.

With that in mind, and Daniel Agger likely to leave for the Nou Camp, it is my suggestion that Martin Skrtel remains ever-present at the heart of defence whilst Lovren gets over the inevitable teething pains of switching clubs.

In the long run however, Sakho and Lovren could well be the partnership that brings consistent success back to Merseyside.

The only prevailing issue could be that both prefer the left-centre-back role. With the Frenchman a natural left-footer unlike the former Southampton star, it will likely be down to Lovren to transition himself to the other side.

Newcastle fans react as club is linked with bid to re-sign Andros Townsend

According to reports in the South London Press, Newcastle United are interested in bringing Crystal Palace attacker Andros Townsend, rated at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, back to St James’ Park, and Magpies fans have been quick to react to the rumour.

The 26-year-old winger, who also played as a striker for the Eagles at times last term, joined the south London club from the Tyneside outfit in 2016 when they triggered a release clause in his contract set at just over £15m, according to the South London Press.

The England international certainly proved to be a key player for Roy Hodgson’s men during the 2017/18 campaign as they recovered from seven straight defeats with no goals at the beginning of the season to eventually finish in 11th position, with the forward scoring twice and providing a further eight assists.

Newcastle supporters, the majority of whom want the club to swoop for an Everton winger this summer, took to social media to give their thoughts on the link, and while one said he is “the new Andy Carroll” having been linked with yet another return to St James’ Park, another said “I’d love for us to re-sign him”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Tottenham Hotspur fans keen to see more of Lucas Moura

Lucas Moura made his Tottenham Hotspur debut on Tuesday night in the team’s Champions League last-16 first leg against Juventus.

The Brazilian joined the North London outfit from Paris Saint-Germain on transfer deadline day in January.

Moura has been made to wait for game time, but in Turin, manager Mauricio Pochettino brought the winger off the bench.

The 25-year-old entered the field of play for the final five minutes of a thrilling encounter.

Tottenham had to claw their way back after a horror opening 10 minutes, in which they conceded two goals from Gonzalo Higuain, one strike being from the penalty spot.

The Premier League club managed to regroup, though, and thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen, Tottenham nabbed a 2-2 draw and two away goals.

Supporters got a glimpse of Moura’s ability in Turin as he linked up well with his teammates and did not shy away from a challenge.

As the games go by, fans are going to learn much more about the former Sao Paulo star, but so far they like what they see.

United dealt blow in pursuit of Bayern star

Manchester United will not sign Toni Kroos in the summer, according to Goal.com

The Red Devils had been linked to bring the German midfielder to the Premier League, but Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has ruled out a summer deal: “Toni Kroos is sure to play in a Bayern Munich shirt next year as well,” said the former Bayern star, now chairman.

United have been heavily linked with Kroos, who failed to squash rumours about a move to Old Trafford earlier this month: “I have noticed that a lot has been written about it. There’s nothing new. No decision has been made. There’s no agreement,” Kroos said earlier in March.

“That will stay that way until the summer, then a decision will be made. It’s no secret the Premier League is an interesting league.”

David Moyes is expected to go on a summer spending spree as he looks to stop United’s decline down the Premier League table. The current champions are 7th, 27 points adrift of league leaders Liverpool. And with growing pressure on Moyes’ shoulders, the scot is preparing to bring in star names ahead of next season.

But it seems that Kroos will not be one of those moving to Old Trafford, with the Champions League holders eager to keep the midfielder. Bayern and United face each other in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Southampton v Swansea – Match Preview

Bottom of the table Southampton entertain Swansea on Saturday, with rumours circulating about the security of Nigel Adkins job.

Adkins has endured a difficult start to his Premier League career, collecting just one win from their opening ten fixtures, with only four points and the worst defensive record in the division ensuring they remain at the foot of the table.

Swansea will be hoping to further their struggles, as they look to push into the top half of the table. Michael Laudrup enjoyed arguably his best week since taking charge of the Swans last week, overseeing a Capital One Cup win over Liverpool at Anfield, and then a commendable fight back against league leaders Chelsea which resulted in a 1-1 draw last weekend.

Southampton goalkeeper Artur Boruc is back in contention after an alleged incident in their last home game with Tottenham.

The Pole missed Monday’s defeat at West Brom following allegations he threw a bottle at home fans and swore at them, but Adkins says he is back in contention following the conclusion of a investigation.

Meanwhile Swansea are set to be without Spanish defender Chico Flores, who is struggling to overcome a dead leg.

Southampton should move for Gary Cahill if Chelsea sign Jamaal Lascelles

According to reports in the Evening Standard, Chelsea have been joined by Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign £45m-rated Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles, and Southampton should be watching developments closely.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Evening Standard that the west London outfit want the 24-year-old to strengthen their backline this summer following a hugely impressive 2017/18 campaign for the centre-back, who led the Magpies to a 10th-place finish in their first season back in the Premier League.

The Evening Standard says that the former Nottingham Forest man, who has five years remaining on his contract at St James’ Park, won’t come on the cheap however, with the Blues likely to have to pay £45m for his services unless the Tyneside outfit soften their stance.

Should he arrive at Stamford Bridge, Lascelles would be competing alongside the likes of Andreas Christensen, Kurt Zouma, Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta and skipper Gary Cahill for a spot in the backline, with at least one of those surely leaving the club if a deal was finalised.

Why should Southampton be interested in the situation?

Well, new Saints boss Mark Hughes will surely make bringing a new centre-back to St Mary’s a priority this summer, after their poor defensive record last term almost saw them lose their Premier League status after four successive top-eight finishes.

It is clear to see that the Welshman, who can ensure Southampton get back to their best by completing a deal for a £10.8m-rated attacker, needs to add some more experience at the heart of the defence given Jack Stephens and Wesley Hoedt struggled at times, with the club yet to really replace two big characters in Jose Fonte and Virgil van Dijk after they left the south coast outfit.

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill may be 32 years of age, but he has the know-how at this level and his brilliant leadership skills have been proven by the fact that Gareth Southgate has named in his final 23-man squad for the World Cup that starts later this month.

In Focus: Winning Slimani race vital to Newcastle survival bid

According to Sky sources, Newcastle have reached an agreement with Leicester City to loan striker Islam Slimani for the remainder of the campaign.

What’s the word?

With strikers once again proving the most sought-after commodity in the transfer market for clubs at both ends of the Premier League table, Slimani has found himself a surprisingly popular figure in recent days despite making just two top flight starts for Leicester City this season and finding the net only once from twelve league outings overall.

Chelsea were reported to have made an enquiry for the Algerian international last week while reliable insider ExWHUEmployee claimed on Twitter late last night that West Ham were in talks to sign Slimani as well – but it now appears Newcastle have won the race for the 6 foot 2 front-man’s services.

The striker Newcastle desperately need?

At this point in the transfer window, it feels as if any striker will do for Newcastle after depending on the much-maligned Joselu for the first half of the campaign. Only five clubs have scored less top flight goals than the Magpies this season and their three main strike options – Joselu, Dwight Gayle and Ayoze Perez – have found only nine Premier League strikes between them.

But it must be remembered that Slimani wasn’t Newcastle’s preferred option – they missed out on Daniel Sturridge to West Brom and Mike Ashley refused to meet Feyenoord’s £22million valuation of Nicolai Jorgensen – and there’s a very good reason for that.

Slimani’s never quite justified his £28million price-tag at the King Power Stadium, failing to prove an effective partner for Jamie Vardy and scoring only eight Premier League goals in 18 months. His performances have been inconsistent at best, and Leicester will be quietly pleased to get him off the wage bill for the next six months.

Can Newcastle get the best out of him?

Perhaps. With Benitez clearly disappointed by his attacking options, there’s little doubt Slimani will be treated like something of a star man up on Tyneside and the fact he’s arriving so late in the transfer window only adds to the narrative of the 29-year-old being Newcastle’s much-needed midseason saviour.

Tall and powerful, he certainly suits the way Benitez likes to set up his side with an old-fashioned front-man who can hold up the ball and bring others into the game – he’s for all intents and purposes an upgrade on what Joselu offers the Newcastle team. Likewise, it shouldn’t be forgotten how highly-rated Slimani – who Transfermarkt value at £19.8million – was before arriving in the Premier League, when he scored 57 goals in 109 appearances for Sporting Lisbon.

If Benitez can rekindle that kind of scoring form from Slimani while maintaining his ability to lead the line, he could prove to be the difference between survival and relegation for the 15th-placed side.

Liverpool ace vows to go for title again with new signings

Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge says that although he is “gutted” to have missed out on the Premier League title to Manchester City on the last day of the season he and his team are ready to challenge once again next term.

The Reds rose from a seventh place finish in 2012/13 to take the race for English football’s top prize to the final game of the campaign, in what was an astonishing 10 months on Merseyside.

Liverpool did all they could in fixture 38 by beating Newcastle at home, yet the scoreline they craved from West Ham at City – a win – did not come.

As a result the Reds are still waiting for a first title in 24 years – and a first in the Premier League era – but Sturridge says that despite the felling of anguish, the club are ready to bounce back and go again after a fine season:

“I know we will be contenders again next season,” he is quoted by the Liverpool Echo.

“We will take the positives from this season and learn from the negatives.

“Next season will be a big year for us and we’re looking forward to that already.

“I think this squad is unbelievable. We’ve done really well and I fully expect us to push on again next season.

“This experience will stand us in good stead for next season. I believe we will challenge. I am sure the manager will buy players who he believes can push us on to the next level.

“With whoever comes in together with the great players we already have here, I am sure we will do well next season.”

Sturridge himself took his league goals tally to 21 with an effort against Newcastle, and will feature for England at the World Cup this summer.

Danny Rose abused in under-21 win

England under-21’s beat Serbia 1-0 on Tuesday night, but the game was overshadowed by ugly scenes at the final whistle.

Connor Wickham scored in the last minute to give the visitors a 2-0 aggregate win and secure their place at the European Championships in 2013.

However, Danny Rose was sent off in the dying moments and it has been revealed that the Tottenham defender was racially abused by members of the crowd.

England goalkeeping coach Martin Thomas appeared to be head-butted as he left the pitch, whilst some of the players and assistant Steve Wigley were also attacked.

The FA has confirmed that they intend to take a strong stance after the incidents and will appeal to Uefa.

“The FA condemns both the scenes of racism and the confrontation at the final whistle during which time our players and staff were under extreme provocation,” the statement, published in The Guardian states.

“The FA has reported a number of incidents of racism to Uefa following the fixture. These were seemingly aimed at a number of England black players by the crowd. The matter is now with Uefa.”

Stuart Pearce and Jordan Henderson both also stated that they were fully aware of racist chants and monkey noises from the home faithful.

“I think there were one or two racist incidents that came from the crowd and they have been reported to Uefa by ourselves. It is in their hands now; they will have to deal with that,” Pearce stated.

“There was a lot of racist abuse out there from the stands and a lot going on after the game. There were also stones, coins and seats getting thrown at us. What happened wasn’t nice and is not called for in football,” Henderson added.
