Rashford or Saka, and what about Foden? The big England decisions Southgate must make against Senegal

The Three Lions continue their World Cup campaign with a last-16 meeting with the African champions on Sunday, but their line up is far from clear

Gareth Southgate could not have asked for much more when England took on Wales on Tuesday.

The England manager was under pressure following a disappointing 0-0 draw with the United States, with many pointing the finger at his tactics and team selection.

So he needed a good performance and that’s exactly what he got, with England cruising to a 3-0 win which saw them top their group and set up a last-16 clash with Senegal on Sunday.

Southgate shuffled his pack slightly and his changes worked perfectly, with Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden – who were both handed their first starts of the tournament – sharing the goals between them.

But that leaves the England manager facing some difficult decisions when it comes to selecting his side to face Senegal.

GOAL, takes a look at some of the issues Southgate must decide on…

Getty/GOALRashford or Saka?

How can you leave Marcus Rashford out after his superb second half display against Wales?

It’s difficult to see Gareth Southgate doing that, especially when you consider the Manchester United attacker also scored in the win against Iran.

Rashford is clearly brimming with confidence, as you would expect from a man who already has three goals to his name during the tournament.

But then what do you do with Bukayo Saka?

Southgate is a big fan of the Arsenal forward, who it must be noted opened the World Cup with two goals of his own in the Iran victory.

The 21-year-old was given a rest against Wales with the knockout rounds in mind, so does Southgate now rip up his original plan and leave Saka on the bench against Senegal?

There is of course the option of playing both, as Rashford is more comfortable on the left. But that would mean leaving someone else out to accommodate both wingers.

It’s a difficult decision for Southgate, although it’s one every other manager involved in the tournament would love to have.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWhat to do with Foden?

Just like Rashford, Phil Foden seized his opportunity to impress when he was handed a start against Wales.

The Manchester City star started out on the right of the front three, but switched over to the left-hand side for the second half following a tactical tweak by Southgate.

And he looked far more comfortable over there, creating the first goal with an excellent driving run into a central position which resulted in the free-kick from which Rashford scored.

And he added the second himself, arriving late at the far post to turn in Harry Kane’s brilliant ball across the penalty area.

The clamour for Foden to start will be huge, but if he does, then Southgate will have to leave out one of his favourites.

Raheem Sterling started on the left against Iran in the opening game and performed well, scoring the third goal.

Southgate usually always starts with Sterling, who he trusts implicitly. So even with Foden’s performance on Tuesday, the England manager will be massively tempted to revert to type when it comes to Sunday’s knockout fixture.

He does of course have the option to move Foden into one of the central midfield positions, which would allow him to play the 22-year-old and a more natural winger. But that does not seem to be an option Southgate is considering.

Getty ImagesDoes Mount come back in?

Chelsea midfielder Mount was given the night off against Wales after starting both of England’s opening group-stage games.

Southgate went with the experienced Jordan Henderson on Tuesday, with Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice taking up the other two central midfield spots.

That did perhaps give England more control than they had against the United States, although that was more than likely a result of Wales’ inept display rather than Henderson’s involvement.

If Southgate sticks with the four at the back system he has utilised so far, then he will have a big call to make in the midfield.

He is a huge fan of Mount and what he offers, but bringing him back into the side could leave England a little short when it comes to protecting the back four.

It’s a choice between going with a slightly more attacking approach, or one that could give them a little bit more stability defensively.

When it comes to Southgate, he usually prefers the latter option, especially when it comes to knockout football.

(C)Getty ImagesStick or twist with the system?

Southgate has stuck with the same 4-3-3 system throughout the tournament so far, but the expectation has always been that at some point he would return to his favoured back-three when the opposition have more potent attackers.

The thought is that using three centre-backs would tighten things up defensively against the top teams, and it is of course a system that has served England well in the past.

It is not always popular amongst fans, however, who view it as too negative – with Southgate often coming in for criticism when he uses it, especially if it leads to a disappointing performance.

And as dangerous as Senegal are, they are not a Brazil or a France, and England supporters will expect their team to be on the front foot during Sunday’s contest.

So as tempting as it might be for Southgate to bring in an extra defender, he will have to weigh up what that would do to his attacking options and what forward-thinking player he would have to leave out as a result.

Yorkshire board 'misleading people' – Boycott

Geoffrey Boycott has hit back at suggestions that his involvement on the Yorkshire board could prove disruptive and reiterated concerns about the club’s financial position

Geoff Boycott has hit back at suggestions that his involvement on the Yorkshire board could prove disruptive and reiterated concerns about the club’s financial position.Boycott is set to stand for re-election to the Yorkshire board at the end of March but the he faces opposition from the current hierarchy, with chairman Steve Denison describing it as potentially “counter-productive”. The club has written to members setting out reasons why they should not vote Boycott on to the board. He has responded by accusing Yorkshire of misrepresenting the situation. He told the that he does not plan to interfere in playing matters – something he has made clear in written correspondence with the club – but wants to address members’ concerns and help manage the high level of debt, which he described as “killing the club”.”The last thing I want is any trouble,” he said. “I’m 75 years of age. I need trouble like I need a hole in the head. I’m only standing because there are vacancies on the board and because I care about the club. That’s all. I want to act for the members and the benefit of the club.”I’m not standing to get involved in the cricket. That point has to be made. Our cricket is going good. There’s no problem with it. They’re making out I’ll get involved in the cricket and upset the apple cart, but I’ve said twice in a letter that’s not my intention.”Even when I was on the board before, I never got involved in the cricket; I never went in the dressing room once. The board are misleading people by suggesting I’m going to get involved in the cricket; the only time I would ever get involved is if I was asked.”Boycott, who was at the centre of divisive rows at the county during his playing days, previously served on the Yorkshire board between 2007 and 2012. He was also elected as club president for 2012 and 2013. Since then, Yorkshire have won back-to-back Championships with a largely homegrown side, reasserting themselves as one of the dominant forces in the domestic game.Despite that success, Yorkshire’s overall debts stand at £22m – a legacy of nearly going bankrupt before the intervention of former chairman Colin Graves. The club announced a £300,000 profit for 2015 but further borrowing is expected to finance the development of Headingley and Boycott called the situation a “recipe for disaster”, warning that it could affect Yorkshire’s future viability.”The cricket is going great, but while we’re basking in the cricket, and the success of the cricket, we’re racking up so much debt that, if we’re not careful, we might not be in existence further down the line, and it’s no good having a good cricket team and the club going down the tube,” Boycott said.”Every Yorkshire member knows that you have to live within your means, and the debt is killing the club. It’s a recipe for disaster. I’ve got my own ideas, but we can’t go on racking up debt and massaging the finances.”Yorkshire is supporting three people – chief executive Mark Arthur, Robin Smith and Sir Gary Verity – as candidates to join the board, which can comprise of up to eight members. Smith, who is standing for re-election, Denison, Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire’s director of cricket, and Stephen Willis are those currently serving on the board.

Stokes 'in the mould of Kallis' – Simmons

West Indies coach Phil Simmons believes allrounder Ben Stokes is the glue that holds the England side together and said he was in the mould of Jacques Kallis

George Dobell in Barbados30-Apr-2015

Ben Stokes’ bowling figures have not made for pretty reading this series, but have not necessarily reflected how he has performed•AFP

A year ago Ben Stokes returned from Barbados having made a fool of himself. Struggling for form, he reacted to his first ball failure in a T20I by returning to the dressing room and punching his locker so hard that he broke his wrist. It was an injury that ruled him out of the World T20 that followed. It would be naive to claim he is a completely reformed character now. There is still an edge; still something just a little feral about him. You wouldn’t want to spill his pint in a pub.And you wouldn’t want to change him. Channel him, perhaps. But not change him. Because English cricket is already well-stocked with careful cricketers. It is well-stocked with percentage cricketers who bowl good areas, bat with discipline and field tidily. And there’s nothing wrong with any of that. But Stokes could be special. It is his passion – his almost angry desire to win – that saw him rise to the moment while others cowered away during the Ashes. A batsman capable of destroying the best attacks – remember the Perth Test? – a bowler of unusual strength and pace and an outstanding fielder wherever he finds himself, Stokes has the potential to inspire, excite and damage. If all goes to plan, he could balance the England team for a decade.Paul Farbrace on…

Steven Smith: “There will be a lot of comments like that [Smith saying England won’t “come close” to Australia during the Ashes]. He was someone I tried to sign for Kent when he was 17 because his mum had a British passport. But his dad was adamant he was going to play for Australia and to be fair his dad was a pretty good judge. We think we’re making progress as a Test team.”

Adil Rashid: “The progression he has made in the last few weeks has been excellent. He has worked incredibly hard at getting his pace right and all the batters have been helping out, a bit like Ian Bell did with Moeen last year. He is bowling a little bit quicker but is still getting the ball above eye-line and still spinning the ball. He adds hugely to our batting as well. He is a fine player who has improved massively with the bat and has put himself into a really good position.”

Ignoring rumours of changes at the ECB: “I had a grounding with my two-and-a-bit years working with Sri Lanka. The first time I was there the board was dissolved three times. One night Murali told me I was sacked and the next day we were all reinstated. You know in international sport that results are what it’s all about. You can’t worry every day about what might happen.”

Travelling to Ireland for ODI: “It is an England game and I couldn’t imagine watching the game on television. Some day I will be watching games on television but I don’t want that to be now. I want to keep working with the team. It is quite exciting with all these young guys – I think there are potentially six debutants – and I want to be there when they play their first game.”

World Cup: “The World Cup, it was horrible. Horrendous. You get home and watch the quarter finals and that was horrible as much as you make yourself watch them. We spent all winter being hammered but winning in Grenada feels like turning a corner. There was a huge relief.”

It was a point acknowledged by West Indies coach Phil Simmons ahead of the Barbados Test. “I wish I had him at No. 6,” Simmons said.” He’s in the mould of Jacques Kallis. He can take a game away with you with bat or ball.”He’s the glue that holds the England team together. His bowling allows Jimmy Anderson to come back fresh and that’s a big thing. He showed his quality in Australia. He took them on and he scored a hundred. I’ve been impressed with him since then. That’s the kind of cricketer you need.”They are strong words and, coming from an opposition coach during a series, they carry extra weight. But a word of caution is required, here. Stokes is supremely talented. But he is no more talented than Rikki Clarke was at 20 or Ben Hollioake was at 19. Young cricketers don’t come with a guarantee. At some stage Stokes has to fulfil the talent. That has only happened sporadically to date. His bowling average in this series – 214 – is eye-wateringly awful, while his marvellous innings of 79 in Antigua was followed by an innings of 8 in Grenada, which ended when he pulled a long-hop into the hands of deep midwicket. On both occasions he played admirably selflessly but both innings were ended somewhat gormlessly. But statistics sometimes tell only the partial story. Stokes actually bowled splendidly in Antigua. He hurried batsmen on a slow pitch – he was regularly timed above 90mph – and combined that hostility with control. But for a wicket off a no-ball and a couple of dropped chances, his figures would be somewhat improved. While he was not quite so controlled in Grenada – he conceded 16 fours in his 25 overs – he continued to ease the load on Anderson, in particular, and underlined the impression that he is a vastly talented player in a period of development. He needs to learn more skills with the ball – and he will find no one better to learn from than Anderson – and just a little patience with the bat. Nobody wants to change him, but he may require investment and patience. For that reason, if no other, it seems England will persevere with him in the side for the third Test. While the wicket looks dry – very good for batting, but dry – and West Indies picked two spinners for the last Test here (against New Zealand last June; Sulieman Benn claimed a five-wicket haul in the first innings), an unchanged England side appears likely.”He certainly is someone that the more he plays the better he’ll be, there’s no doubt about that,” Paul Farbrace, the England assistant coach said after training on Wednesday.”At the moment I see him as a batsman who bowls. We want him to develop into a high quality allrounder. By playing him he’ll make the progression he needs and he needs to play. The more he plays the more he’ll understand international cricket.””It’s the same with Chris Jordan and Moeen. The more they play the more they’ll understand it and the more they will win games.”We all saw the progress Jordan and Stokes made by playing. Yes, they might be quite similar but there was good progression by playing them. Stokes has had one outstanding game and one tougher game. Jordan seems to be progressing all the time.”You would think that, if you were thinking of playing two spinners, they’re the most likely to miss out, but at the same time you want to keep progressing them and keep pushing them forward. We’re all seeing the progress that the two of them are making.”The England selectors were criticised retrospectively for not taking Stokes to the World Cup. But he had passed 10 only three times in his last 10 ODIs (his highest score was only 33 and he averaged 11), while his bowling had become a liability. It was his own fault he missed out. Just as missing out on the World T20 was his own fault. He knows that. And he knows that, in returning to Barbados, he has a chance to put things right. The Ben Stokes story is just beginning; it should be a lot of fun.In an ideal world, England might like to rest Anderson and Stuart Broad. But the series is not won and failure would bring consequences. So England will probably play an unchanged side in Barbados. That is tough on Liam Plunkett and Adam Lyth and Adil Rashid and Mark Wood – all of whom are training well – but Jordan and Stokes are learning their trade in international cricket and need some continuity to settle. They have bowled some tough overs in docile conditions.Meanwhile the ECB has supplied candidates for the director of cricket role with a job specification. Contrary to reports elsewhere, nobody has yet been offered the role and Andrew Strauss – perhaps encouraged by news that it is not necessary to travel with the team – has not withdrawn from the running. Tom Harrison is in New York and Colin Graves has just arrived in Barbados.

India bowling coach urges more discipline

India’s bowling coach B Arun has conceded his team’s bowlers need to be more disciplined, and that a lot of work needs to be done on them, after India conceded 348 runs on the opening day of the SCG Test against Australia

Sidharth Monga at the SCG06-Jan-20151:54

‘We are working on consistency’ – B Arun

India’s bowling coach B Arun has conceded his team’s bowlers need to be more disciplined, and that a lot of work needs to be done on them. India are yet to take 20 wickets in this Test series, Arun’s first as India’s bowling coach. Day one of the SCG Test, with an injured Ishant Sharma missing, was possibly India’s worst show in the field yet. Australia plundered 348 for the loss of two wickets on a flat pitch.”It’s been a mixed bag, and we have to be a lot more disciplined than what we are,” he said. “But there have been occasions where we have shown discipline. I think the consistency is going to be the key.”Arun was asked what went wrong with India’s bowlers so often, for nobody wants to bowl poorly. He said: “There is a lot of work that needs to be done on that. Obviously we are working on that for them to be more consistent and disciplined. Every kind of wicket that you bowl on is different. You have got to adjust to the wicket before you do that, and that’s exactly what we are working on.”What kind of work is being done Arun wouldn’t say. “It’s very difficult for me to elaborate on the kind of process that we set to work on these guys. Yes, it’s an issue, and yes we need to be more consistent, we are aware of that.”Arun said the fitness of India’s bowlers vis-à-vis other attacks was not an issue. “Obviously the fittest team is playing here so it’s not a question of fitness,” he said. “I don’t think it is fatigue either. Yes, it’s a big mental thing to be successful in international cricket, and that comes with experience.”According to Arun, it all came down to consistency. “We are a young side, we are in the process of rebuilding and learning,” he said. “We have performed very well so far, we have been competitive. If you notice, the first two matches could have gone either way. There are a lot of lessons to be learnt. The fact is that we are not as consistent as we need to be. That’s a fact, and that’s something we really need to look hard and work on. That’s exactly what we have been doing. I think this is going to be a great learning experience for us to move forward.”Ishant has been India’s best bowler in this series, but he doesn’t have the wickets to show for it, with nine dismissals. Is it because he is forced to bowl restrictively as the other bowlers have not been consistent? “If you look at the trend in this series, it’s been hard work to fetch wickets,” Arun said. “It’s the case for bowlers from both sides. One who is willing to work hard in terms of line and consistency has been successful. Ishant has had a fair amount of success, and by far he was the most consistent Indian bowler on this tour so far.”When told of Ishant’s average of 48.22 in the series, Arun paused for a moment and said: “You can only work, you can never guarantee success.”Arun confirmed that Ishant sat out with pain in the left knee, and that Cheteshwar Pujara was dropped. “Pujara has been exceptional for us earlier, but all the decisions and the composition of the team is decided by the team management,” he said. “People who are benched are spoken to, and they will be given sufficient opportunities to come back too. We are in the process of rebuilding, and we have to try out a lot of people, and see how far it goes. Then we have got to work out the combination.”

Cícero externa 'esperança' no Botafogo e faz apelo: 'Não estraguem o patrimônio do clube'

Ele vê “esperança” no time, no “caminho certo”.

AFP27-May-2014David Allen, the former England and Gloucestershire offspinner, has died at the age of 78.Allen played 39 Tests for England in the 1960s, when he faced tough competition for a place from offspinners such as Fred Titmus, Ray Illingworth and John Mortimore, a team-mate at Gloucestershire. He took 122 Test wickets at an average of 30.97.Allen also scored 918 Test runs, including five fifties, with a best of 88. But perhaps his best known batting feat at international level was to block out the final over from West Indies fast bowler Wes Hall, when Colin Cowdrey had come back in as last man at the non-striker’s end after retiring hurt with a broken arm earlier in the innings, to ensure a draw in the Lord’s Test of 1963.Allen played for Gloucestershire from 1953 to 1972, taking more than 1200 wickets and scoring over 9000 runs in first-class cricket. He became Gloucestershire’s president in 2011.”Gloucestershire County Cricket Club is saddened to announce the death of former player and club president David Allen at the age of 78,” said the county said in a statement. “Our sincere sympathy goes out to his family and friends.”
