SAFC: Fans react to footage of Borini goal

Fans of Sunderland have been reacting to a post on Twitter, which relayed footage of Black Cats fans celebrating Fabio Borini’s goal in the Tyne-Wear derby back in 2014.

Borini’s 19th-minute penalty was just the beginning of a magnificent day for Sunderland fans back on February 1 of 2014, as the Italian’s strike was the first of three goals scored by Gus Poyet’s side at St. James’ Park, seeing the Mackems defeat Newcastle United 3-0 on their own turf.

And, while the thought of Premier League football and Tyne-Wear derbies may now seem like the distant past to many involved with Sunderland, after footage of the club’s fans celebrating Borini’s goal was shared by Sunderland Limbs on Twitter, a great number of the Stadium of Light faithful flocked to have their say on the footage, with many sharing their own memories and experiences of the famous victory over their fiercest rivals, while others simply claimed they would never tire of watching the footage back.

Hopefully, with Lee Johnson in the dugout and Kyril Louis-Dreyfus at the helm, the Black Cats can surge up the divisions and create new memories just like this one.

So, what exactly did these Sunderland fans have to say in reaction to the footage of Fabio Borini’s goal?

“Never gets old mate does it?! Incredible witnessing that man!”

@patty1981JN

“Goosebumps.”

@AndrewArmour_

“Will never tire of watching this.”

@RossAdam21

@OfficialDPope

Orlando City vs D.C. United: Where to watch the match online, live stream, TV channels & kick-off time

Here's where you can watch Orlando City vs D.C. United in the MLS on TV or live stream.

On Saturday, Orlando City will host DC United in Florida, a matchup between two teams that are separated by three points in the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference.

The home team is seventh in the division with 11 points after seven league games, while the visitors are ranked 11th, having played an extra match.

Orlando City has had a rocky start to the new season after making the MLS Cup playoffs and losing in the first round the previous year. They have yet to find any real consistency.

The Lions have 11 points through their first seven league games, having started with victories and draws before losing to Tigres in the CONCACAF Champions League by the thinnest of margins.

Orlando City will be encouraged by the fact that they do currently occupy a playoff spot at this early stage of the season and will now be keen to put a run of results together, starting with a second straight win this weekend.

Despite having a difficult start to their own term, their opponents will head to Orlando seeking to catch up to their hosts in points and possibly move up to the top seven.

DC United did open their MLS season on a winning note against Toronto in February, but they would then go six matches without recording a victory.

Wayne Rooney's team will be eager to make it two in a row on Saturday and continue their ascent towards the top seven with that victory putting them just outside the playoff spots.

GOAL brings you everything you need to know about where to watch the game on TV and stream live online.

Arsenal vs Southampton: Where to watch the match online, live stream, TV channels & kick-off time

How to watch and stream Arsenal vs Southampton in the Premier League on TV and online in the United States.

Arsenal take on Southampton in a crucial Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium on Friday.

▶Watch Arsenal vs Southampton live on Sling TV today!

▶Watch Arsenal vs Southampton live on Sky Sports today!

The hosts are unbeaten in their last 23 Premier League home games against Southampton (W16 D7), the most one side has hosted another without ever losing in the competition.

However, Mikel Arteta's side let a two-goal lead slip in each of their last two Premier League games (2-2 draws at both Liverpool and West Ham), which made them just the fifth side in the competition's history to do so.

Indeed, the Gunners have dropped as many points from being ahead in these two games (four) as they had in their previous 47 matches (draws with Southampton and Brentford this season).

Meanwhile, Southampton find themselves at the bottom of the table and are desperate for points. They have won just six times in the league this season out of 31 appearances and taking on Arsenal at the Emirates is a daunting task, to say the least.

NUFC claim made on Joelinton vs Villa

Jermaine Jenas has claimed that Joelinton has his ‘best game’ for Newcastle United in their 1-1 draw with Aston Villa in the Premier League on Friday night.

Speaking on the BBC’s latest Match of the Day programme (via Chronicle Live), the former Magpies player was still critical of the former Hoffenheim man’s display, but claimed that he gave Tyrone Mings a ‘torrid’ night:

“Joelinton potentially had his best game in a Newcastle shirt but it all seemed to fall apart once they got in that 18 yard box.

“Even into the final third, some of the decision making at times…

“Dwight Gayle and Fraser have got to get closer into positions where they can score goals. Joelinton doesn’t get his shot off in the first half.

“These are the situations Steve Bruce is talking about.

“We know Joelinton isn’t a true centre-forward and these situations explain that. Just shoot there and anything can happen.

“It was a negative pass. In a weird way it was his best game in a Newcastle shirt and he gave Tyrone Mings a torrid time but it doesn’t really matter because he doesn’t score goals.”

Joelinton tried but not enough quality

It is perhaps fair to say that Joelinton did try his best to help his team out at St James’ Park, but ultimately a lack of real quality let him down once more.

As Jenas points out, the 24-year-old – currently valued at £18m by Transfermarkt – decided to try and square the ball instead of shoot when he was clean through on goal, which pretty much sums up just how low on confidence he is front of goal at the moment.

The striker failed to record a single shot on target and also lost no fewer than 18 of his duels and was dispossessed of the ball 21 times, the joint-most out of any player to have set foot on the pitch (Sofascore).

Joelinton just needs to get a run of goals to gain some confidence, but at the moment his lack of end product in the final third is costing Steve Bruce’s side at a time when they really need him given their precarious league position.

LFC must hand Minamino second chance

It has only been just over a year since Liverpool swooped for Takumi Minamino but the Japanese wideman is already being linked with a permanent departure from Anfield.

The 26-year-old, currently on-loan at Premier League rivals Southampton, is interesting Sevilla, with the Spanish giants reportedly willing to pay up to €10m for the player according to reports in Spain..

Despite Minamino not having had the best of times with the Reds since his arrival from Red Bull Salzburg, it would certainly be a mistake to let him go this early.

In his first season with the Reds, he struggled for form, failing to get off the mark for goals. However, he has certainly improved during the 2020/21 campaign, scoring six goals and notching two assists for Liverpool and Southampton combined in all competitions. They are numbers that are certainly not too bad.

They are certainly better statistics than the likes of current Reds’ wide options, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who have just one goal and five assists between them this season.

For a player who appears to be finally getting to grips with life in the Premier League, it seems quite premature for Liverpool to cut Minamino adrift so soon.

It is not like the Anfield outfit would be receiving any considerable financial benefit should he leave having forked out a reported £7.25m to bring the Japanese international to the club. Meanwhile, his wages are not the biggest burden on the club, with Minamino earning £72k per week – less than Shaqiri, Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner, amongst others.

With Jurgen Klopp proclaiming the Japanese as a “wonderful” signing upon his arrival at Anfield, it would seem unlikely that opinion will have changed in the 14 months since.

Minamino has certainly shown enough potential to be kept around so Liverpool should definitely not let him leave so soon.

AND in more news, have a look at which Championship star Liverpool must sign this summer…

Marquinhos, Soares and six Arsenal players who could leave in the January transfer window

Though they are set to be busy bringing in new faces, the Gunners might also be open to letting some players move on in the next few weeks

The January transfer window is upon us, and Arsenal are expected to be active as Mikel Arteta once again looks to freshen up his squad ahead of the second half of the season.

There is already lots of talk about potential new arrivals who could come in and give the Gunners the boost they need to maintain their challenge for the Premier League title.

But what about outgoings? Who could move away from north London over the next few weeks?

GOAL takes a look at six potential candidates who could be heading for the Emirates Stadium exits…

  • Cedric Soares

It’s been a very difficult season for Cedric Soares so far. The experienced Portugal defender has barely been given a sniff of action by Arteta, making just four appearances in all competitions.

His only start came in the Carabao Cup defeat by Brighton and he has only been used twice off the bench in the Premier League.

Even in the Europa League, where he would have expected to get some minutes this season, he has featured just once –  coming on for the final two minutes during the home win against FC Zurich.

There is no doubt that Soares would have been expecting to get more game time this season. He did have opportunities to move on last summer, but opted to stay to try and fight for his place in the team.

But with Ben White now having established himself as first choice right-back and Takehiro Tomiyasu also in front of him in the pecking order, Soares’ chances of getting minutes now seem slimmer than ever.

So should an opportunity to move on in January arise, it could be an appealing option to the former Southampton man, who still has 18 months left on his contract in north London.

And Arsenal might not stand in his way, given the options they have in the squad at his position.

  • Marquinhos

There was a good chance that Marquinhos was going to be sent out on loan last summer following his arrival from Sao Paulo.

But the winger's performances in pre-season and the way he handled himself around the training ground convinced Arsenal that it would be a better idea to keep him around the club for at least another six months.

It was decided that having him train with the first team would be beneficial, not just because he could be used in cup competitions, but because it would also give him the opportunity to acclimatise to his new surroundings and settle into London.

Marquinhos has gone on to feature five times in all competitions this season, and scored his first goal in the Europa League win at Zurich.

The winger has made himself a popular member of the squad, but the club are now considering whether a loan move in January would be best for the 19-year-old’s continued development.

Game time over the second half of the season would be extremely limited at Arsenal, so a move away to a club where he could play on a regular basis could be viewed as an appealing option to all parties.

  • Reiss Nelson

This one does feel unlikely, given Nelson has featured far more than many expected this season, while the injury he picked up in mid-December makes him far less appealing to teams who would want him to make an instant impact.

But he is out of contract at the end of the season, so a tempting offer in January could see Arsenal at least consider cashing in on the 22-year-old.

It’s difficult to imagine Nelson being allowed to leave unless Arsenal brought in another winger, but that is an area where the Gunners are potentially looking to strengthen in January.

For now, it feels unlikely. But Nelson’s contract situation means a move away can’t be completely ruled out, although he has spoken several times in recent months about is desire to earn himself a new deal at Arsenal.

    Catalin Cirjan

The young Romanian has been one of the stars of Arsenal's Under-21s this season.

Cirjan wasn’t fully fit in the summer, when the vast majority of the club’s top young talents were sent on loan to continue their development.

But now he has completely recovered from the knee injury that saw him sidelined for more than a year, Cirjan has been showing why he is so highly-rated at Arsenal, producing several eye-catching displays with the U21s.

Given the way Arsenal now look to utilise the loan market when it comes to their best young players, it would be no surprise should they decide to send the playmaker out to give him a taste of senior football over the second half of the season.

Rodrygo, Lee and the teenage La Liga stars to watch in 2019-20

While the likes of Lionel Messi and Eden Hazard will take most of the headlines, there is a new generation of talent about to burst onto the scene

The new La Liga season is just hours away, and fans are excited to see their club's latest big-money signings in action.

Perhaps even more satisfying for a supporter, though, is seeing a young player flourish when given the opportunity on the biggest stage.

But who should you be looking out for when the teams are named on the opening weekend?  Goal  breaks down some of the top talents the Spanish top flight has to offer in 2019-20…

    Ander Barrenetxea | Real Sociedad

While the likes of Martin Odegaard, Alexander Isak and Mikel Oyarzabal will capture most of the headlines when it comes to wonderkids at La Real, perhaps the most exciting youngster within their squad is Barrenetxea.

Much like Antoine Griezmann a decade ago, the 17-year-old was promoted to the first team squad without having ever played in the club's B team last season, and scored his first goal for the club in a victory over Real Madrid late in the campaign.

  • Getty Images

    Sergio Camello | Atletico Madrid

It took 18-year-old Camello just 35 minutes of his Atletico Madrid debut to score his first goal for the club against Levante towards the back end of last season, and it is likely he will earn more opportunities this time around.

Diego Simeone has bolstered his attacking ranks over the summer, but Camello's talent is such that he should earn more than a few chances to impress within the first-team squad.

    Bryan Gil | Sevilla

Though yet to start a match in La Liga, winger Gil was a regular on the Sevilla bench last season, and already has a goal and an assist to his name in the Spanish top-flight.

Still just 18, he will have to fight for further opportunities this time around with Monchi and Julen Lopetegui having overhauled the squad at the Sanchez Pizjuan over the summer.

Tipped for greatness when part of Barcelona's famed La Masia academy, Kubo was forced to return to his native Japan in the wake of the Blaugrana's transfer ban in 2015.

And while the training he received back home may not have been at the same level as that in Catalunya, it did allow him more opportunities in senior football as he became one of the star names within the J-League.

Now 18 he is back in Spain, although this time with Real Madrid after they beat Barca to his signing. While he is likely to start the campaign playing with Castilla, some impressive performances in pre-season have hinted that he is ready to play a part for Zinedine Zidane.

Arda Turan and Barcelona's 15 worst signings of all time

As the Turkey midfielder prepares to move back to his homeland, Goal takes a look at some of the least successful buys in Blaugrana history

  • Getty Images

    Arda Turan

The Turkey midfielder arrived at Barca in the summer of 2015 for a fee of €34 million, but had to wait six months for his debut as the Catalans were banned by FIFA from registering new players for a year due to irregularities in the recruitment of youngsters.

The 30-year-old has made only 55 appearances since then, each one costing the club around €1m when the transfer fee and his wages are taken into account.

He has not played a single minute this season and after all the excitement when he arrived, Barca fans will now he happy to see him leave, as he moves closer to a return to his homeland this month.

    Dmytro Chygrnskiy

A strange signing by Barcelona in 2009, Dmytro Chygrynskiy spent just one season at the Catalan club, and it was a disappointing one for the Ukrainian international.

After arduous negotiations with Shakhtar Donetsk, Barca completed a €25m deal for the centre-back in the summer of 2009 and his last game was a UEFA Super Cup loss against the Catalan club he would later join.

But he made only 14 appearances for Barca's first team and was sold back to Shakhtar for €15m in the summer of 2010 as incoming president Sandro Rosell insisted the club needed the money to pay debts incurred during Joan Laporta's tenure – even though coach Pep Guardiola had wanted to keep the defender.

  • Getty Images

    Alex Song

In the summer of 2012, Barcelona were looking for a player who could operate as a defensive midfielder and also as a centre-back. And after baulking at the €40m asking price of Athletic Club's Javi Martinez, they signed Alex Song from Arsenal.

However, a disastrous display by the Cameroonian in defence proved he would not be very useful in that position and he did not seem suited to Barca's playing style in midfield either as some of their worst performances came when he was in the team.

He then embarrassed himself in Barca's title celebrations by stepping forward to claim the Liga trophy from captain Carles Puyol when the Catalan had been beckoning Eric Abidal instead. After two seasons, Song left to join West Ham.

    Alex Hleb

Alex Hleb joined Barca for €17m in the summer of 2008 and although he did make a number of first-team appearances for the Catalan club, he did not really play much of a part in the team's treble triumph that season.

The Belarus midfielder had impressed in his three seasons at Arsenal, but his 36 appearances for Barca were quickly forgotten and he failed to score in his time at Camp Nou.

He was later loaned to Stuttgart, Birmingham and Wolfsburg – and was last seen in the Russian Premier League.

Celtic face transfer battle for Dembele

According to Football Insider, Nottingham Forest have submitted a loan-to-buy offer for Celtic transfer target Siriki Dembele, and it could have big consequences for the linked-away Odsonne Edouard.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks have claimed that Neil Lennon’s side are interested in signing the Peterborough forward, but it appears Championship side Forest have made the first move in the race to sign him.

Football Insider claim that Dembele wants to leave Peterborough this month, and that Forest have made a proposal that would see the 24-year-old join them on a more permanent basis at the end of the season.

The report adds that the bid is worth around £250k for a player who is out of contract in the summer.

Bye-bye Edouard

With Odsonne Edouard’s long-term future at Celtic still very much unclear – reports have claimed the club have slashed his asking price in this January transfer window – Nick Hammond will surely be on the look-out for a potential replacement for the club’s striker.

And in Dembele – the older brother of the Hoops’ very own Karamoko – they could find someone who could well fill the boots of the Frenchman.

Dembele had spent a lot of time playing out wide on the flanks, before Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson made the tweak of moving him infield into the number nine role.

And since then, it’s safe to say he’s been very impressive. This season in League One, he’s played 22 games in total, but 15 of them have come up front. In those games as the Posh’s starting striker, he’s managed five goals and five assists, including a dazzling hat-trick against Shrewsbury.

The tactical switch is something Ferguson has talked up too, saying: “But the boy has been absolutely outstanding since realising he can play as a central striker. He destroyed Ipswich last weekend with a goal and two assists.”

The 5 foot 8 ace would offer Celtic some versatility up front given he can play anywhere across the line, and it’s now up to Hammond as to whether he can get a deal done.
