Pundit backs Fonseca for Wolves job

There is almost an expectation that Bruno Lage will become Nuno Espirito Santo’s successor but Get Italian Football News’ Editor in Chief, Conor Clancy believes that Paulo Fonseca could be a great fit for them.

Fonseca was recently relieved of his duties by Roma almost immediately after Jose Mourinho was on the market following his sacking from Tottenham Hotspur earlier this year and he will take charge from next season.

Wolves have a large Potuegese contingent within their squad, eight first-team players to be precise and Fonseca has experience of similar tasks during his time at Shakhtar Donetsk, as they are famous for having a lot of Brazilian players in their ranks.

The Portuguese manager has a history of winning trophies which is something Wolves haven’t experienced for a long time and Clancy believes that he could be a good alternative that Wolves target, he exclusively told The Transfer Tavern:

“He’s proven how he can work from his time at Shakhtar as they always have a lot of Brazilian players and he won things there. I’d presume that Portuguese is the language of the dressing room or at least some corners of it so I do think that Wolves seems like quite a nice fit for Fonseca.”

After being granted a work permit to move over to England take charge at Molineux, Lage appears to not be far away from being appointed as the club’s next manager, however, Fonseca could be someone that remains on their radar.

Fonseca has been linked with several jobs since leaving his role at Roma, including the vacant roles at both Everton and Celtic which would provide two totally different tasks for him.

Times of their lives for Tigers' two-of-a-kind

One bats at the top of the order; the other at the bottom

John Polack21-Mar-2002One bats at the top of the order; the other at the bottom. They’re both tall and they’re both right handers. They were both born in Queensland, both made their first-class debuts in Western Australia, and both are now at the heart of a stunning Tasmanian revival aimed at landing their adopted state its maiden first-class crown. It could be added that they were both born in April 1976 – in the very same week, in fact. Also that both of them enjoyed glittering underage careers, one captaining his state and the other even being chosen for two national teams. And that now, having risen from relative obscurity in the intervening years, they have both become key figures in the Tigers’ successful quest to head off Western Australia and appear in a Pura Cup Final this week in Queensland. But that would probably be over-emphasising the point that the careers of Michael Dighton and Shane Jurgensen are enjoying a remarkable symmetry at the moment.”We’d sort of been in the same situation for a while in the lead-up to this year in that we hadn’t been able to string any length of first-class games together,” says Dighton.”And this season again, things have been very similar for us. When we started off, we weren’t in the team. But we’ve both worked hard and worked our way in there.”Shane’s done really well ever since coming in. It’s been a great credit to him: he’s been very committed and he’s bowling the best I’ve ever seen him bowl – having played against him at underage level and in Perth grade cricket as well.”He’s in very good control of his game at the moment, he’s enjoying himself, and he’s doing really well. He’s got the hard job: he’s the one who’s got to consistently run in and bowl in the right areas all day and he’s done his job magnificently.”Though Jurgensen hit the national headlines last week when a hat-trick against New South Wales made him only the second Tasmanian bowler in history to perform the feat, both have also largely been unsung heroes this summer.Dighton’s blend of elegant strokeplay and patient defence has yielded a run of form that, by no coincidence, has snowballed with the team’s surge as a whole over recent months. And, where he has added steel to an uncharacteristically-labouring Tasmanian top order, Jurgensen has helped offer backbone to a rejuvenated pace attack. For a team that had been struggling to garner momentum prior to Christmas, their twin contributions have been manna from heaven.”I guess I wouldn’t have dreamed of it turning out the way it has done. It’s all fallen into place: I’m very comfortable here and I’ve settled in very well,” adds Dighton of the background to scores of 65, 124, 4, 76 and 84 in Tasmania’s four most important matches of the summer.”I had a bit of a point to prove to everyone in WA – that I thought I could play at this level – and it’s all worked out really well.”Though Jurgensen hasn’t been completely left in the shade when it comes to showcasing batting talents either. Part of the best lower order in the competition this season, he’s established himself as interstate cricket’s most dependable number eleven with a tally of 111 runs at the average of 22.20.He also featured in a phase of play widely identified as the turning point of Tasmania’s entire season: a rollicking 91-minute, 114-run last wicket partnership with David Saker that inspired their team to an innings win in a low-scoring match with Queensland in January.”A lot of belief came out of that hour and a half: a belief that, no matter what the situation, we can pull ourselves out of it,” remarks Jurgensen.”Basically, we’ve got 12 blokes who just want to have a real crack at playing first-class cricket. And 12 guys just having a ‘red hot dip’ for each other. We’re all about the same age; we’re all crazy; and we have a lot of fun together. We respect the opportunity that we’ve been given.”I still think we’re maybe not getting quite the respect we deserve from some sections of the public and the media. Which is probably good in a way – because it means there hasn’t been too much pressure on us.”The whole experience of coming to Tasmania has been one to savour,” he comments of a season that has yielded immeasurable satisfaction. As well as the small matter of 25 first-class wickets – the majority of them at crucial times – at an average of 21.52.”I was a bit of an early bloomer when I was playing youth cricket but the period between the under-19s and finally establishing myself in first-class cricket has been six years in the making.”And now, to add to it, we’re in a position where we can actually win something really significant.”Whatever happens in the remainder of this pair’s careers – and there are suddenly plenty of reasons to assume they will be long and distinguished – a special place in their histories has already been reserved for 2001-02. If the unthinkable happens and they are members of the first team that brings a national first-class title back to their new shores, they will also likely be afforded their own special place in many Tasmanians’ hearts.”When you first start playing cricket, you have a lot of personal goals but, all of a sudden, the most important thing is the team. Whether you’re in it or out of it, the team’s more important than anything,” says Jurgensen.”I obviously still want to do really well at an individual level but, for me, it’s moved on from that to realising that there’s now a fantastic opportunity for 12 guys to get together and do something that will mean a lot to Tasmania.””You do dream about playing in a Pura Cup Final. I wasn’t really all that close to a spot when WA played in their last few finals, and it’s remained a dream of mine ever since I’ve been a young cricketer,” observes Dighton.”I absolutely love Tasmania already; it’s a little bit quieter than Perth and that suits me a little bit more. The people have been fantastic and, as a place, it’s amazing.””All the guys in the Tasmanian squad have been fantastic to me; they’re a really good set of people and I haven’t had a problem with anyone. That’s made it easy.”And, most importantly, there’s a real good buzz about the group. We all really love each other’s company; we have fun and enjoy ourselves and it’s all turned around for us.”Tasmania’s spirit, and the close-knit connection between its players, has been contagious this season. Impossible not to discern, even from the sidelines. And, between its new team within a team, there lies an even more inextricable bond than most.

Liverpool fans dislike Phillips update

A number of Liverpool fans have been bemoaning an update regarding Nathaniel Phillips, with the club reportedly willing to listen to offers for him.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are enjoying a richly-deserved breather after a taxing season, following their impressive third-place finish in the Premier League.

At the start of the campaign, finishing in that position would have been considered a failure, but given the obstacles they had to hurdle, it was a great effort.

[freshpress-quiz id=“355458″]

One player who had a season to remember was Phillips, who was thrown into Liverpool’s defence in the absence of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

The 24-year-old performed admirably, despite his limitations, making 15 league starts and playing a big role in the Reds securing Champions League football.

According to ESPN, however, Liverpool are open to the idea of Phillips leaving this summer, with Klopp potentially not seeing him as a key part of his squad moving forward.

Leeds star Patrick Bamford signs new deal

Leeds United star Patrick Bamford has reportedly extended his stay at Elland Road until 2023, acting as a huge boost for anyone of a Whites persuasion.

The Lowdown: Bamford excels for Leeds

The 27-year-old has overcome some previous struggles to become one of the star men at Leeds these days, excelling upon their return to the Premier League. Bamford has scored 15 times in 35 league appearances this season, also chipping in with seven assists, outlining the effectiveness of his all-round game.

The striker’s form could even see him make England’s Euro 2020 squad this summer, although that remains to be seen.

The Latest: Striker extends stay at Elland Road

According to a fresh report from The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Bamford discreetly signed a new one-year extension to his current Leeds deal, keeping him at Elland Road until 2023.

The journalist revealed: “A careful look at the Football Association’s intermediary transactions list published in March — covering February 1, 2020, to February 1, 2021 — shows an ‘updated registration’ for Bamford.

“It seems to have gone under the radar but The Athletic has learned that last summer the 27-year-old signed a one-year contract extension that means he is actually tied to Leeds until June 2023.”

While it doesn’t guarantee that the Englishman won’t move elsewhere before then – Liverpool are mentioned as being interested in him – it is stated that the Whites are now in a ‘position of strength’.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Huge boost for Whites

This revelation comes a massive boost for Leeds, with Bamford such an important piece of Marcelo Bielsa’s jigsaw, leading the line superbly this season and more than justifying his £34,000 weekly wage.

His goals and assists are both vital, of course, but his work-rate has also stood out, with his fitness levels clearly exceptional thanks to working under Bielsa. Indeed, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hailed that very trait in the 27-year-old as “outstanding”.

The hope is that Bamford remains at Leeds until 2023 and beyond as he approaches the peak years of his career.

In other news, one Leeds player’s lack of football this season has left a former Whites defender baffled. Find out who it is here.

Nice eye West Ham’s Jesse Lingard

According to Sky Sports (via Calciomercato), Nice are interested in signing on-loan West Ham star Jesse Lingard this summer.

Nice eye Lingard

Lingard made the move to the Hammers on loan in the winter transfer window and has impressed in east London, managing nine goals and four assists in 12 games for the club (Transfermarkt).

The Irons want to sign him permanently in the summer from Manchester United (Daily Mail), but it now seems that French club Nice are also eager to capture his services.

Unlikely

Nice have the finances to complete such a deal. British businessman James Ratcliffe is the club’s owner, and according to Forbes he has a net worth of $16.6bn (£12bn). The club is also situated in a picturesque setting on the French Riviera, making it an attractive destination.

However, London is also a desirable location and, from a sporting point of view, there is no reason why Lingard would select Nice over West Ham. The Hammers are currently fifth in the Premier League and are well in contention for European football next term, while Nice are languishing in 10th place in Ligue 1 and will not be playing continental football in 2021/22.

Also, the French top flight lacks the prestige of the Premier League, so while there is no guarantee that Lingard will remain at the London Stadium, West Ham are unlikely to lose out on him to Nice.

In other news, many West Ham fans want this man signed in the summer.

Sinclair does it again in Yorkshire League

A third Mathew Sinclair century in three days wasn’t enough to help Cleethorpes to a win over Barnsley in the Yorkshire League yesterday

Lynn McConnell09-May-2001A third Mathew Sinclair century in three days wasn’t enough to help Cleethorpes to a win over Barnsley in the Yorkshire League yesterday.Barnsley held on for a draw with their last pair at the wicket. The game was played at Chichester Road and Cleethorpes batting first scored 237/5 with Sinclair setting a club record with his third century. Backing him up were James Stevenson 47 not out and Mike Smith who scored 29.Barnsley’s effort in the field was rewarded with keeping the score below 250 but they were soon in trouble at 85/7 with George Thompson taking four wickets.Barnsley was well led by tail-ender Rob Ledger who had to battle the whole way during his innings to end up on 70 as the side ended on 170/9.That effort denied Cleethorpes maximum points from the game and they had to settle for six of eight points.Their next game will be a more realistic test as they meet last season’s champion Sheffield Collegiate, who also won the national knockout competition.

Aston Villa: Fans flock to Matheus Pereira links

Many Aston Villa fans have been talking about the club’s links with a move for West Brom star Matheus Pereira.

The Athletic have recently reported about Pereira and his situation, saying that Villa are understood to be interested in the former Sporting man and they are only one of several Premier League clubs eyeing the Brazilian.

The report has also stated that there are no guarantees that interest from Villa and other Premier League clubs will lead to a concrete offer, but it is down to whether the player seeks a move to remain in the top flight next season.

Pereira scored for the Baggies recently against Villa themselves, helping his side pick up a 2-2 draw away from home. The 24-year-old has impressed for West Brom in the Premier League this season, scoring eight times and picking up five assists in 28 appearances for Slaven Bilic and then Sam Allardyce.

The news about Villa’s links with a move for Pereira was relayed on Twitter by VillaReport. Many Aston Villa fans made their views clear about the playmaker.

Celtic: Eddie Howe touted for the Spurs job

Celtic’s hunt to replace Neil Lennon in the Parkhead dugout is becoming a never-ending cycle of torment.

It’s been a number of weeks since the Northern Irishman left his post with the Bhoys but there are no closer to an announcement on a new manager.

What’s the word?

Eddie Howe was in advanced discussions with Celtic to the point where he was performing due diligence on behind-the-scenes matters and preparing his contingent of backroom staff.

However, as the clock has ticked by, it’s become increasingly unlikely he’ll arrive at Paradise.

Brighton and Crystal Palace have both been interested in his services but now a major power in English football could have Howe on their radar.

That happens to be Tottenham Hotspur, a side who have just sacked Jose Mourinho after a torrid season where Spurs sit outside the top four.

As a result, the former Bournemouth boss is being tipped to head to north London. Speaking on DAZN’s Premier League coverage this week (via Glasgow Live), Tim Sherwood provided Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy with a glowing review.

Howe also happened to be on the same show as he listened to this appraisal: “Give him the finances and let him build a football club. Let him build a structure, let him build a playing identity. I think that’s what he (Levy) needs to do now,” Sherwood began.

“He needs to look for a young, up and coming manager… like Eddie Howe,” he added.

Hammer blow to Celtic

If Levy does indeed have the 43-year-old on his radar then it can only be bad news for Celtic and their pursuit.

They have waited a considerable period of time now while they wait for a response for Howe and this is the precise reason he’s been hanging around.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-howe-lampard-klimala-ajer-gossip” title= “Read the latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

His agent has claimed the manager won’t return until the summer while GIVEMESPORT claimed at the weekend that his representatives still think he can get a job in the Premier League.

Peterborough director of football Barry Fry commented that Howe could be waiting for a bigger and better challenge to come up which now Mourinho has been sacked, has presented itself in the form of Spurs.

It would be hard to say no to a club like Tottenham; they have a brand new stadium, one of the best strikers in world football in Harry Kane and they have regularly been in the final stages of the Champions League in the last few years.

For Celtic’s majority shareholder Dermot Desmond, this is a crushing piece of news.

Howe was on the verge of becoming the new boss at Celtic but with Spurs lurking, all possibility of him arriving in Glasgow may as well be done and dusted.

AND in other news, Exciting twist emerges in Celtic manager hunt, Desmond could now perform a big U-turn…

Cundy mocks Gers’ achievement

TalkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy has mocked Glasgow Rangers’ achievement of winning the Scottish Premiership this campaign.

Cundy mocks Gers win

The Gers’ status as Premiership champions has already been confirmed as they lead the table by 20 points with five games still left to play (BBC). It is the 55th league title in the club’s history.

However, Cundy was clearly far from impressed with the victory. When discussing the possibility of Eddie Howe taking the Celtic manager’s job, he said (via Ibrox News):

“It’s like winning the egg race [Scottish Premiership], isn’t it like the egg and spoon? Isn’t it a little bit like that?”

Disrespectful

This is a very disrespectful statement from Cundy, but not one that we should be surprised to hear given talkSPORT’s penchant for sensationalist points of view. Yes, the Premiership may lack the competition of the Premier League, but the pressure on the likes of Rangers to succeed and get their hands on the trophy must not be underestimated.

This term, the Gers have displayed their credentials in Europe as well, as they lost just one game in the Europa League on their way to the round of 16 (Sky Sports) – they were eventually knocked out by Czechia champions Slavia Prague. Steven Gerrard and his side deserve far more respect than they have been given here by Cundy.

In other news, Rangers eye this 27-goal forward.
