Spurs: Gold relays exciting Nuno claim

An exciting claim has been made about new Tottenham Hotspur boss Nuno Espirito Santo this week…

What’s the word?

As relayed by football.london’s Alasdair Gold, current Spurs defender Japhet Tanganga waxed lyrical about the Portuguese coach. “Had a really enjoyable chat with @JTanganga99,” claimed the reporter. “He said he can tell from training that Nuno Espirito Santo’s Spurs will be an attacking one.”

Indeed, the 22-year-old revealed a little insight into what has been happening on the training pitch since Nuno’s arrival earlier this month, saying: “I can tell you for sure that we’re going to be attacking. That’s because we’ve been working hard on it in training and on pressing, and implementing his ideas.”

Fans were wrong?

These comments should alleviate many of the fears which surfaced when the 47-year-old former Wolves boss was first linked with the north Londoners.

Some members of the Lilywhites faithful were so against the idea of him being appointed that they actively voiced their concerns on social media, leading to a campaign against him. This was because many claimed that he would bring “negative” and “dire” football and wouldn’t be too different to what they witnessed under Jose Mourinho, as sourced by talkSPORT.

However, those who were against Nuno should now have egg on their face after this exciting claim from Tanganga, as it suggests that they were completely wrong and that the Portuguese is likely to get Spurs back to being the attacking side they once were under Mauricio Pochettino.

In fact, some of the reaction has already flipped completely, with many supporters seemingly buzzing in the replies to the tweet from Gold. One fan even claimed to be “excited for the new season” – a drastic change in attitude, that’s for sure.

Nuno’s Wolves side were amongst the lowest scorers in the Premier League last season, netting just once more than relegated West Brom (35), so Spurs fans’ fears weren’t unjustified, although there were plenty of factors behind that low scoring return.

The Midlands outfit sold Diogo Jota to Liverpool, and then Raul Jimenez suffered a cruel head injury which effectively curtailed his whole season. In the two seasons before that, Wolves were a thrilling team to watch as the Portuguese steered them to consecutive seventh-place finishes.

It’s time to get behind Nuno, as evidently he’s going to try and bring that ‘Spurs DNA’ back to the club next season.

West Ham fans rave over Soucek captaincy

Many West Ham United fans have taken to Twitter to express their delight over an announcement involving the club’s midfielder Tomas Soucek.

The 26-year-old shone for the Irons during his first full season in east London and played a pivotal role alongside Declan Rice in midfield.

Starting all 38 Premier League matches and becoming one of only two West Ham players to feature in every single league game, he also won the most aerial duels per match (6.2) out of the entire Hammers squad (WhoScored).

The colossal midfielder took that form on to the international stage and even captained his Czech Republic side to a shock round of 16 win over Netherlands at Euro 2020 (whufc.com).

As reward for his efforts, Soucek has been officially rewarded with the captaincy for his country on a permanent basis. Czech national team boss Jaroslav Šilhavý confirmed during his Wednesday press conference that the 26-year-old will be handed the armband as he is made captain indefinitely.

Flocking to the announcement, it’s safe to say that plenty of West Ham supporters are ecstatic over this update on their hero – with one branding it ‘good news’.

Stewart: Jurgen Klopp will look to freshen up Liverpool attack

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Liverpool star Paul Stewart believes Jurgen Klopp will look to freshen up his forward options this summer.

Over the last few years, Liverpool have arguably had the best attack in the country thanks to Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, with the trio firing the Reds to a Premier League title and Champions League trophy during Klopp’s tenure.

However, it all went a bit stale at times last season, largely due to goal droughts Mane and Firmino both went on.

And now Stewart is tipping Klopp to bring in some new faces as he looks to get Liverpool challenging for the title again.

“I see them bringing players in just for competition, you know, so that it puts the lads on their toes,” the ex-Liverpool man exclusively told FFC.

“I still see possibly those three starting unless… I wouldn’t rule out [Harry] Kane completely, but I still see those three starting. I think Mane is quality, but I think they’ll bring players in as competition.”

If it was not already going to be, signing Kane this summer looks like it will be extremely tricky.

Tottenham’s new director of football Fabio Paratici has made it clear that keeping the England captain in north London is a priority for the club.

West Ham fans react to Yarmolenko news

According to a report by Calciomercato, via West Ham Fan Zone, Andriy Yarmolenko appears to want out of West Ham United.

Despite shining at Euro 2020, the 31-year-old has arguably failed to replicate the same form at club level for West Ham United.

Yarmolenko started just one match last season in the Premier League under David Moyes and it is now believed he is open to leaving the east London club.

The winger signed from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2018 and is currently West Ham’s highest earner on £115,000 per week, arguably a high salary to pay for someone who barely features.

Yarmolenko suffered from a combination of injury issues and lack of opportunities under Moyes, and with this news emerging that he could be looking for new opportunities, many West Ham fans held no shortage of opinion.

Check out a flavour of their verdicts in reply to West Ham Fan Zone and West Ham News & Views below, with some describing the exit rumours as “good” news.

Mashonland look to set up their 16th win

The match between Mashonaland and Midlands could well be heading for a good finish tomorrow, as the home side is pressing for its 16th successive Logan Cup victory

John Ward27-Oct-2002The match between Mashonaland and Midlands could well be heading for a good finish tomorrow, as the home side is pressing for its 16th successive Logan Cup victory. They finished the day 183 runs ahead in the second innings with seven wickets in hand. The high point of the day was a century by Sean Ervine of Midlands, his second of the Logan Cup season. It was rather a fortunate innings, as he survived three dropped catches and several miscued strokes that evaded the fielders, but he continued to go boldly for his shots and finished unbeaten on 119 as the Midlands innings closed for 431, a deficit of 85.Ervine came in on the departure of Wishart for 118, having added only seven runs to his overnight score. He began with an enterprising stand of 97 with Doug Marillier, who made 69, but after that only captain Don Campbell with 26 gave him much support. The tail, supposedly the strongest in the competition, disappointed, the last five wickets falling for only 45 runs. This was mainly due to some fine bowling by Gus Mackay who took four wickets with the second new ball to finish with five for 69 for the innings. When Mashonaland batted again, they no doubt aimed to score quick runs with a decision in view, but Midlands had other ideas. Innocent Chinyoka, despite his no-balling disease, opened the bowling at gentle medium-pace in preference to the sadly off-form David Mutendera, and quickly reduced Mashonaland to 8 for two. When Grant Flower fell for 11 with the total at 31, Mashonaland had to be very wary as Andy Flower joined Darlington Matambanadzo at the wicket.Matambanadzo meanwhile had his own problems to deal with. ZCU managing director Vince Hogg was very proud of his 87-minute duck for Rhodesia B against Natal B in 1979/80, a world record until beaten a couple of years back by New Zealander Geoff Allott. Matambanadzo seemed to be aiming to break this now local record as he spent 80 minutes and 49 balls opening his account. The introduction of Mutendera finally cracked his will power, though, and Matambanadzo suddenly hit him through the covers for four, amid great applause from his team-mates, and next ball sliced a thick edge past the slips for another boundary.Andy Flower soon overtook him and finished unbeaten on 47 at the close, out of 98 for three; Matambanadzo closed with 24. Tomorrow Mashonaland will be very keen to continue their winning streak, but they will need to set up a declaration total and then bowl out Midlands on a fine batting pitch to do so. They may well be stretched.

'We just have to win' says Shine ahead of Sabres game against the Bears

Sheffield Wednesday tipped to sign Josh Griffiths - Exclusive

West Brom’s Josh Griffiths will be a top target for Darren Moore and Sheffield Wednesday this summer, says Football FanCast’s EFL spy.

Goalkeeper is thought to be one position that Moore is keen on strengthening this transfer window, and Griffiths appears to be the man he has turned to.

According to Yorkshire Live, Moore is tracking the West Brom youngster, though he faces competition from Portsmouth and Lincoln City.

Interest from Wednesday’s League One rivals complicates things, but FFC’s EFL insider believes Griffiths will be a priority for the former Doncaster Rovers manager.

“Josh Griffiths is a top target and rightly so,” he said. “He had a great season with Cheltenham’s promotion side and had another step up with them.

“Darren Moore would have worked with him at West Brom so there will be a lot of assurance and confidence from the staff for him to come into the massive club Wednesday is and do well.”

Having recently released Keiren Westwood, it is easy to see why Moore has made signing a goalkeeper before the start of the new season a top priority. And, obviously being aware of Griffiths from his time at West Brom, targeting the 19-year-old makes sense.

Given their current financial issues, though, it remains to be seen if Wednesday actually have the resources to get such a deal over the line.

Lee Ryder clarifies Dwight Gayle situation

Dwight Gayle agreed to sign a new deal at Newcastle United ‘a few weeks ago’, Lee Ryder has clarified in a fan Q&A for Chronicle Live.

The lowdown

The £4.5m-rated striker made 20 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring just one goal.

The Athletic reported at the end of March that Gayle had extended his stay at St James’ Park by signing a new three-year contract on reduced terms, but rumours around his future have continued to swirl.

Ryder’s Chronicle Live colleague Mark Douglas said he could still see the striker departing, while a report in the Sunday Mirror suggested that Chris Wilder was keen on bringing the 30-year-old back to West Brom if he is appointed manager at The Hawthorns.

The latest

As per Chronicle Live, Ryder was asked to confirm Gayle’s contract situation by a Newcastle supporter who was still unsure after reading ‘mixed reports’.

The journalist claimed: “I was told it [the new deal] had been verbally agreed or done in principle”, adding that Gayle’s family are said to be “settled” on Tyneside, hence his inclination to stay.

The 30-year-old is currently on holiday, so an official announcement could be made after his return.

The verdict

The real question mark here is whether Newcastle have moved to extend Gayle’s deal because they consider him a valuable part of the squad, or because they’re looking to protect his value. Of the striker’s 20 appearances last term, 16 came as a substitute, which certainly doesn’t suggest that he is a central figure at St James’ Park.

It does have the air of a pragmatic step from a club which probably won’t be shedding its deadwood while it remains in limbo amid the ongoing takeover saga.

In other news, Newcastle have been urged to recruit this partner to Callum Wilson.

Edgbaston the right type of wicket, says Caddick

Andrew Caddick was full of praise for the Edgbaston wicket after he took three wickets on it to help bowl out Sri Lanka for 162

Stephen Lamb30-May-2002Andrew Caddick was full of praise for the Edgbaston wicket after he took three wickets on it to help bowl out Sri Lanka for 162. Caddick moved past John Snow to become England’s eighth nost successful Test bowler, finishing with three for 47.”This is the type of wicket we should be playing on. It should perhaps be alittle quicker to get the Sri Lankans jumping around if you want to be critical, but it is a wicket you would expect in May,” said Caddick.”There are no real terrors in it, it is a little bit two-paced but the mainthing is that we bowled a couple of good deliveries that they nicked.”Caddick set aside England’s travails in the first Test at Lord’s, where Sri Lanka declared on 555 for eight in their first innings.”As far as Lord’s is concerned that is old news. You can always have a bad game and I can’t remember the last time the bowlers had a bad game for England.”Anyone can have a bad turn and the fact all four England bowlers had a badturn was a bit of a shock. But at the end of the day we didn’t perform and we should have done better.”The Somerset bowler was troubled by stomach cramps in the Lord’s Test, a reaction to medication for a rib injury. He needed cortisone injections onTuesday to guarantee his fitness for Edgbaston.
