Ryder slams Murphy’s display v Aston Villa

Lee Ryder has criticised the performance of Jacob Murphy as Newcastle United lost 2-0 away to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The Lowdown: Another loss

The Magpies slumped to their second defeat in two games at the hands of Dean Smith’s team, with a stunning goal from Danny Ings and a penalty from Anwar El Ghazi enough to give the hosts all three points at Villa Park.

After the 4-2 home defeat at the hands of West Ham United last weekend, Steve Bruce is now under pressure to try and get his first points on the board in the new season.

The Latest: Murphy criticised

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, Ryder criticised Murphy’s performance, claiming that the 26-year-old found it ‘a real struggle’ for long periods in the match, and that his yellow card added to a ‘tough’ afternoon.

The journalist gave him a mere 4/10 overall rating, the joint-lowest out of anyone in the Newcastle line-up.

The Verdict: Must do better

If Murphy is to cement the starting place at right wing-back as his own, then he must perform better than he did at Villa Park yesterday.

The Englishman lost out on four of his duels in the game and also failed to record a single shot, dribble, interception, key pass, accurate cross or long ball. He lost possession no fewer than 15 times, the joint-most out of any of his teammates (Sofascore).

Getting a yellow card on top of all that really summed up his afternoon, and he will be hoping for better displays over the rest of the season.

Cricinfo staff26-Nov-2008Security concerns have put the status of India’s tour to Pakistan next year in limbo but the foreign ministers of both countries have said they are hopeful the series goes ahead without further problems.”It [the tour in January] should come through,” Pakistan’s foreign minister, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, told a joint press conference with India’s external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi. “We are aware of the concerns and we will try to address all of them.””I hope the tour comes through and the people will enjoy it,” Mukherjee said.Against the backdrop of uncertainty surrounding the tour, Qureshi sought to reassure India by giving the example of the tennis and shooting teams that are “enjoying their stay” in Pakistan.India’s tour, from January 4 to February 19, includes three Tests, five ODIs and a Twenty20 international. India visited Pakistan in June-July for the Asia Cup this year, but concerns increased after the Champions Trophy, due to be held in September, was postponed following security concerns by certain participating nations. Last week, a tour by India’s junior hockey team to Pakistan was scrapped at the last minute after the Indian government refused to approve security plans offered by Pakistan.”We missed the Indian hockey team,” said Qureshi, ” but you [the cricket team] are welcome”.

Birmingham interested in Brandon Baiye

Birmingham City are interested in a deal to bring Brandon Baiye to St. Andrew’s this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Mike McGrath, with The Telegraph journalist revealing in a post on Twitter that the Blues have submitted an enquiry regarding the availability of the Clermont Foot defensive midfielder ahead of a potential move in the summer transfer window.

McGrath goes on to claim that 2. Bundesliga side Hamburg have also registered their interest in the 20-year-old with the Ligue 1 side, however, it is not said whether Clermont would be willing to discuss a deal – be that temporary or permanent – for the Belgium U21 international this summer.

In his tweet, McGrath said: “Birmingham have enquired over Belgium Under-21 midfielder Brandon Baiye, 20, at Clermont. Bundesliga2 club Hamburg have also shown interest.”

Fans will be buzzing

Having already secured a number of impressive loan and permanent signings in the summer transfer window, with the likes of Jordan Graham, Chuks Aneke and Ryan Woods joining on free transfers and Dion Sanderson, Juan Familia-Castillo and Tahith Chong arriving on temporary deals, the news that Lee Bowyer does not appear to be finished with his summer transfer business just yet is sure to have Birmingham fans buzzing.

Indeed, despite his tender age, the £315k-rated man impressed over his 28 2. Liga appearances while on loan at SC Austria Lustenau last season, scoring four goals and registering three assists for the Austrian side.

As such, despite predominantly being a defensively-minded player, it is obvious from his returns that the midfielder also possesses a keen eye for goal, as well as being useful from a creative perspective.

Furthermore, with defensive midfield being an area of the pitch in which Lee Bowyer lacks a bit of depth, the addition of Baiye ahead of the upcoming Championship campaign would appear to solve this particular problem for the 44-year-old in the short term, as well as the Belgian seeming to boast a considerable amount of potential for the future.

So, while Baiye may be something of an unknown quantity to many Blues fans, considering how well things have gone for Bowyer at St. Andrew’s thus far, it would seem wise for the club’s fanbase to once again place their trust in the 44-year-old’s judgement regarding the Clermont starlet.

Liverpool fans fume at Nat Phillips update

Some Liverpool supporters are unhappy at an update regarding Nat Phillips’ future, with the Reds willing to sell him this summer.

The Reds suffered terrible injury misfortune at centre-back last season, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all missing most of the campaign.

Liverpool managed to battle their way to a third-place finish in the Premier League, however, with Phillips playing a key role in that achievement. The 24-year-old was drafted in from nowhere in order to alleviate the issue, making 17 appearances in the league, 15 of which were starts.

Despite Phillips impressing at the heart of Liverpool’s defence, he could find chances few and far between this season, with key players back fit again and Ibrahima Konate joining from RB Leipzig.

According to journalist Jonathan Norcroft [via Anfield Watch on Twitter], Liverpool value the Englishman at between £12m and £15m and would accept a “buy now pay later” deal for him this summer.

Celtic interested in signing M’Baye Niang

Celtic have worked smartly in the transfer window to date, and even if arrivals have taken a while to come through, supporters must be impressed with the acquisitions which have been sealed.Liel Abada scored on his debut for the Hoops in the Champions League earlier this week and it won’t be too long before we see Kyogo Furuhashi get his first run out in the green and white. What’s the word?Postecoglou’s main priority at the moment has to be strengthening their defence. They are still severely limited with options at right-back, while Kristoffer Ajer’s departure and Nir Bitton’s red card in midweek should be cause for concern. However, with the threat of Odsonne Edouard leaving lingering in the air, adding options to their forward line must also be considered.According to a tweet from French journalist Sebastien Denis, Rennes attacker M’Baye Niang is a target. He said: “As reported in Italy, the Italian team from Venezia is very very hot on M’baye Niang for a dry transfer. Fenerbahce, Celtic, and Shanghai Greenland are interested in the Rennes striker but to a lesser degree.”An upgradeWhen he was coming through the ranks at Milan, Niang was regarded as a player who could challenge the elite. Scout Jacek Kulig once commented: “M’Baye Niang is getting better and better. He surely has the potential to become a world-class player.”However, his career has never lived up to the dizzy heights expected, touring around Italian and French football without too much success.[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-news-doig-nketiah-mccann” title= “Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]The Senegalese forward has found a home for himself at Rennes, though. He has beaten the opposition goalkeeper on 30 occasions for the Ligue 1 side and, at the age of 26, he is now approaching the prime of his career.Niang scored just once last season but was in the form of his life during the 2019/20 campaign, finding the net on ten occasions.Capable of playing on the flanks or through the middle, he’d be an upgrade on a fair few players at Parkhead.Leigh Griffiths has signed a new deal at Celtic but his future could already be in doubt, with Sunderland interested in securing the Scot’s services on loan.Albian Ajeti has scored twice in pre-season but, after the form he demonstrated last term – netting six times – you have to question whether he’s up to the required standard.Furuhashi has 15 goals in the J-League throughout 2021 but time will tell how he settles into life in Scotland.Niang has already had a spell in British football with Watford, however, so should be well accustomed to the physical demands. However, it’s in aerial situations where the 6 foot 2 striker could really offer Celtic something different. Last season, he won 1.4 aerial duels per match, adding to the enormous tally of 3.4 per game he recorded the season prior. If we compare that to the attacking options in Postecoglou’s ranks, the difference is night and day. Last term, only Moi Elyounoussi from an offensive perspective managed a proficient tally when it came to beating players in the air.He won 1.5 aerial duels per match but you have to go back much further to find the next best tally. For instance, Edouard won just 0.8, while Griffiths and Ajeti only prevailed in 0.5 headed battles. On that evidence, Niang would be a wise signing. Not only can he score goals, he would also be a prolific threat when the ball is off the ground.AND in other news, Celtic could repeat their Shane Duffy nightmare by signing “superb” £8m ace…

A magnificent maiden one-day century from Steven Davies played the major part in Worcestershire’s overwhelming 105-run victory over Lancashire, in a match reduced to 25 overs per side due to the weather. The home side, sadly short of fighting spirit on this occasion, succumbed in less than 18 overs as the rampant visitors proved unstoppable in the field. The inconsistent lunchtime weather provided sun one minute, showers the next, but eventually relented to allow play to start at four o’clock. Lancashire, having won the toss and with Glen Chapple as captain in place of the resting Stuart Law, put the visitors in to bat.Worcestershire dominated from the very first ball, a half-volley on leg stump from Sajid Mahmood, which Vikram Solanki neatly glanced for four. In the second over, Davies hit a ball from Chapple for a superb six over extra cover, and the team was off to an ideal start. Solanki greeted Kyle Hogg to the bowling crease with a six over midwicket first ball, and 16 came off the over; he was not entrusted with the ball again. The pair added 70 at eight an over before Solanki chipped a catch to mid-on, departing for 28. Davies was already into the 40s, and he continued to dominate the innings, reaching his 50 off 40 balls. There were brief cameos from Stephen Moore (12) and Ben Smith (15) at the other end, but otherwise it was largely a one-man show; Graeme Hick had a disappointing day with just 3 off 11 balls. It was a tight call for Davies, as he approached his century with the overs running out. His partners did manage to give him the strike when he needed it, and he faced the last ball on 99. He worked it down to third man for what should have been just a single, but a misfield gave him the four and he finished with a superb 103 off 83 balls. Tom Smith, recalled from a loan spell with Leicestershire as a late replacement for Dominic Cork, bowled well to take 2 for 27, while Keedy did a fine job with 1 for 16 in his five overs to bottle up the middle of the innings. It was a tough chase for Lancashire, made more difficult when Lou Vincent holed out in the covers in the first over. Within six overs they were in terminal trouble, Paul Horton and Mal Loye going for 12 apiece, and the total 26 for 3. Steven Croft and Faf du Plessis were quickly out to skiers, and at this stage four wickets had fallen in consecutive overs. At 32 for 5, Lancashire were doomed. After this, it was simply an exercise in damage limitation by Lancashire, and they didn’t even manage this until the indignant captain, Chapple, arrived at the crease. He hammered Matt Mason for 18 off an over, including sixes over square leg and long-on, raising his team from the depths of 48 for 7 – only in the next over to pop up a simple catch and depart for 23.The final dismal score was 84, and the Lancashire supporters who risked the weather to watch the match will be deeply disappointed by their team’s lack of fight. Gareth Andrew ended with 3 for 12 while Gareth Batty, in his three overs, claimed 3 for 2. Davies alone scored 19 more runs than the entire home team, and Worcestershire are currently on a roll.

Xavier Marshall is fresh from his world-record blast of sixes, but he has already switched his focus to the final of the Associates Tri-series against the home team Canada on Sunday. The No. 4 Marshall cleared the boundary 12 times in his 157, which came from 118 balls against Canada on Friday, to take the mark from Sanath Jayasuriya. There was another serious milestone for Marshall, which provided a boost ahead of the decider. “I feel really good to get my first international century, then to break a world record and also to help the team win the match,” he said. “It was great to go out there and back myself and perform for the team. I didn’t get a score in the first match [against Bermuda] so I was determined to get a big score in the second match.”It was not immediately clear to Marshall that the flurry of sixes had never been achieved before, and he was satisfied with the contribution in difficult conditions. “At the start of my knock the ball was not really coming on as the pitch here is a bit slow,” he said. “The medium-pacers were bowling quite well so I knew I had to be patient and smart about what I was doing. After I got in I began to feel better and better and the outfield was quick. I knew all I had to do was push the ball around and hit away the bad balls.”Finding form ahead of the Champions Trophy has pleased Marshall. “I’m getting to the level where I would like to be but I still have to keep putting in the hard work,” he said. “I want to reach that level where I’m consistently getting good scores and contributing to the team. I will use my first hundred as a stepping stone towards better things in the future.”Marshall said the undefeated team had trained well on Saturday and would be retaining its positive approach for the final. “We want to keep on winning,” he said. Canada earned their place in the final by beating Bermuda by 25 runs in the opening game of the four-match tournament.West Indies squad Chris Gayle (capt), Ramnaresh Sarwan, Carlton Baugh (wk), Sewnarine Chattergoon, Fidel Edwards, Shawn Findlay, Leon Johnson, Xavier Marshall, Nikita Miller, Dave Mohammed, Brendan Nash, Daren Powell, Kemar Roach, Jerome Taylor.Canada squad Sunil Dhaniram (capt), Abdool Samad, Rizwan Cheema, Manoj David, Karum Jethi, Ashif Mulla, Richie Kapoor, Henry Osinde, Eion Katchay, Sami Faridi, Kevin Sandher, Ashish Bagai (wk), Mohammad Iqbal, Harvir Baidwan.

Pundit says Leeds signing Lewis O’Brien would be underwhelming

David Norris doesn’t think that signing Lewis O’Brien would excite the Elland Road faithful and believes that it would be a risky addition.

Marcelo Bielsa has already added highly-rated Barcelona left-back Junior Firpo to his squad, whilst he finally secured the permanent services of Jack Harrison from Manchester City following three previous loan spells.

And according to The Sun, the Argentine is looking to add Huddersfield midfielder O’Brien to his squad after impressing in the last two seasons since coming through the ranks for the Terriers.

Leeds desperately need a player to cover for Kalvin Phillips, and whilst O’Brien has never played in the top-flight, he’s held his own at Championship level – and could be available on the cheap given he’s out of contract in 2022.

O’Brien scored and assisted three times in 44 Championship appearances last season, although with Leeds looking to challenge for Europe next term, Norris exclusively told Football FanCast that he would be an underwhelming signing:

“Whether he can come in and have as big an impact as Kalvin [Phillips], would be a little bit of a risk, and I’m not sure it would get fans excited, but as a young player with potential, it would be a good signing.”
